asking someone if they’re neuroatypical is always cool

Getting congratulated on my work anniversary by my Linkedin connections.

I got a very lateral job title change, and I don't want to update my profile.

pplains, Monday, 15 February 2021 02:28 (three years ago) link

when people in the workplace use terms like "awesomesauce."

hahaha ... yeah, I really try not to be bothered by this, but it takes effort ... my current "embarrassment avoidance strategy" is thinking that maybe they moved around a lot as kids, potentially to foreign countries, and this tendency to assume the vernacular of their perceived peers was kinda a survival mechanism of their youth that just continued into adulthood and that is why far too many things are "bonkers" and they have a "kiddo" and associate with "humans".

sarahell, Monday, 15 February 2021 05:22 (three years ago) link

wild how quickly this thread turned from "irrationally embarrassed" to "irrationally judgmental"

hmm i think this revive is rationally judgmental but irrationally embarrassed

sarahell, Monday, 15 February 2021 08:47 (three years ago) link

is "bonkers" new slang?

That's bonkers

Party With A Jagger Ban (dog latin), Monday, 15 February 2021 10:40 (three years ago) link

then again i still catch myself somehow wanting to say "totes amazeballs" on occasion, which is about as cringey as it gets

Party With A Jagger Ban (dog latin), Monday, 15 February 2021 10:41 (three years ago) link

i no longer believe in irrational embarrassment. it has been vanquished.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Monday, 15 February 2021 15:29 (three years ago) link

I admit the neuroatypical comment was lame, apologies.

The "bonkers" thing is hard because there are only so many ways to say "this situation is crazy" without utilizing really loaded terms...like crazy. Bananas is the one I use if I ever need to, "wild" also works.

I get weirdly embarrassed when people in restaurants overdo the apologies for running out of something.

me, I don't care, I just...find something else (I can eat almost anything), but if someone's like "oh I'm sooooo soooo sorry that we don't have the 3 pound Steakburger with Alien Cheese and Salamander bread, I know you had your heart set on that, let me buy your dessert", I'm embarrassed cos they think I actually am 'upset' when I'm not.

I think there are enough really picky high maintenance customers that restaurant people just do that as a default. ... I am irrationally embarrassed when I observe customers who actually do get upset and require mollification.

sarahell, Monday, 15 February 2021 17:33 (three years ago) link

i wonder how these people were raised and/or how they came to be the way they are ... basically I am rationally embarrassed for their parents (and often kids).

sarahell, Monday, 15 February 2021 18:06 (three years ago) link

I once contacted corporate to tell them if they got a complaint for xxxx store from a couple at xxxx time on xxxx date to ignore it because I was there and they started everything.

they told me that couple did complain and gave me a free lunch lol

you mean, like, did their parents use words like "awesomesauce" too?

brimstead, Monday, 15 February 2021 19:24 (three years ago) link

i'm just going to blame my great great grandfather who was lobotomized in his 30s

brimstead, Monday, 15 February 2021 19:25 (three years ago) link

the thing about awesomesauce is that annoying as that phrase is, almost everybody I know got tired of saying it back in 2009, and even if they did say it, it wasn't like a frequent go-to phrase of theirs.

whereas I have a co-worker who in 2021 actually says it every 5 minutes, 20 times a day, and I'm just like "no, this is bullshitsauce"

no, lol, I was referring to the people that flip out at restaurants when the server tells them they are out of alien cheese

sarahell, Monday, 15 February 2021 20:57 (three years ago) link

oh geez yeah... argh i... those people challenge my pacifism lol

brimstead, Monday, 15 February 2021 22:06 (three years ago) link

I always want to tell those people they can go elsewhere.

Once, when we had just started dating, my partner and I had a run in with a police in SF, and he said to us, 'you boys are lucky I have some place to be,' and my partner said, 'then go there,' and that might have been the moment where I really fell in love

Split screen videos where the same person plays all the instruments in their little bedroom studio, even when they are pretty good.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Wednesday, 19 May 2021 18:45 (two years ago) link

That's a good one.

I watch some bass ones every now and then, and it's embarrassing when they don't turn down the original track. Like, you're playing bass man. How can I tell what's yours and what's Tony Levin.

pplains, Thursday, 20 May 2021 01:22 (two years ago) link

i think the only time i've seen this was a pomplamoose "video song." those were the days, huh . . .

LOL these guys always do Levin/Pastorius/Karn/Claypool.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 20 May 2021 04:58 (two years ago) link

I have to say I'm kind of happy these exist when I'm trying to figure out how to play something.

joygoat, Thursday, 20 May 2021 13:01 (two years ago) link

Well yeah.

I wish they'd flip the mirror mode, so they appeared left-handed (if they're IRL right-handed.)

I've probably had more fun playing along with Paul McCartney than anyone else, not so much just because he's an above-average bassist, but because I can follow along with him like I'm looking into a mirror.

pplains, Thursday, 20 May 2021 13:26 (two years ago) link

I don't really get embarrassed by music instructional videos or even necessarily playing, there's just something specifically about those same dude/chick playing all the instruments overdubbed that gets me, like you're watching an adult compete in a school talent show or something. I mean I can't really talk shit about it because I post bullshit clips of me noodling on guitar to instagram and they're probably even more embarrassing.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, 20 May 2021 13:52 (two years ago) link

It's not 100%-cringe free, that's for sure.

Worst ones are when the same person wears different shirts for each instrument.

pplains, Thursday, 20 May 2021 14:08 (two years ago) link

"signature model" musical instruments. I paid a premium to play a guitar that was custom-designed for someone else.

Author bios written in the third person by the author themselves

just1n3, Tuesday, 25 May 2021 12:36 (two years ago) link

If you're ever asked to write a bio in third-person, just say "XXX is a writer who lives in blahblah. In his spare time, he enjoys tennis." Don't even think about using the term "brain-crush".

Even if you don't play tennis.

― pplains, Thursday, June 14, 2012 8:59 AM

pplains, Tuesday, 25 May 2021 12:55 (two years ago) link

they make us do that for theatre bios. I hate them. i usually write something self-deprecating and then thank a random celebrity

Feta Van Cheese (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 25 May 2021 12:56 (two years ago) link

"Neanderthal has acted in 21 plays at the ~theater~ and has been a performer in central Florida for over 20 years. In his spare time, he enjoys tennis."

There. Just add to the numbers and you don't have to worry about it anymore.

pplains, Tuesday, 25 May 2021 12:58 (two years ago) link

also said I was ranked #1 globally, I think I went a bridge too far.

Feta Van Cheese (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 25 May 2021 13:01 (two years ago) link

Well yeah. I've never even seen you at Wimbledon.

pplains, Tuesday, 25 May 2021 13:02 (two years ago) link

Yes. Plain fact bios in the third person are fine, but "quirky" ones make me wanna die from embarrassment

just1n3, Wednesday, 26 May 2021 00:44 (two years ago) link

Wasn’t it Tim Rice who never changed his, in the more contemporary programme for Evita, whereas ALW updated and lengthened his?
