3 clips from limmy's show s3 here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01p085w

series returns next monday - still not uk-wide, shockingly. available on iplayer though

genuinely obsessed with his stuff. that perfect mix of rough (sidestepping the bullying of frankie boyle) and touching and ridiculous

NI, Tuesday, 6 November 2012 02:23 (seven years ago) link

I don't know, it's much more variable than the other Scottish comedy shows on the block - for every "Wrong way down a one way street" there's a "Lloyds pharMAcy", and I have real doubts it'll ever get to the heights of the Falconhoof "Kill Jester" again - Gary Tank Commander is solidly good, and Burnistoun (although equally prone to misfires) stomps all over it with Jolly Boy John. I'll definitely be iPlayering it though.

Did anyone else ever try following him on Twitter? SERIOUSLY something wrong with him.

I love Limmy. Lloyds Pharmacy was hilarious for me. Yes or noo, all the Adventure Calls, the amazing "will I bring another spoon" sketch. I can't even remember all the ones I like cos there are so many.

Also Benny Harvey RIP!

i followed him on twitter for a while, had to give up after not long. though i do have some kind of admiration for someone who is a professional success despite spending all day picking fights with strangers.

The Bus trip to Yoker sketch is his crowning achievement IMO. Yeah his Twitter is pretty crazed.

Remarkable how many Limmyisms are still current between me and the missus: "a child's *sweetie*, officer?", "20s *plenty*?" "youse *guys*???", "REQUIEM" etc etc

Stevie T, Tuesday, 6 November 2012 17:59 (seven years ago) link

The "Yoker" clip is all time. Never seen the "touching" one upthread before (aka Millport I guess), after a robustly shit day of it, mostly due to work, this struck a chord that's resonating like a tuning fork right now. Looking fwd to the new series.

that mustardless plate (Bill A), Tuesday, 6 November 2012 19:15 (seven years ago) link

"Yoker" is great. I have no need to follow his twitter as it's all endlessly retweeted into my stream anyway.

I managed one episode of Gary Tank Commander and thought it was excruciating.

michaellambert, Tuesday, 6 November 2012 20:35 (seven years ago) link

I quite frequently get people retweeting him in my twitter stream... and he doesn't seem very funny, to be honest.

emil.y, Tuesday, 6 November 2012 20:58 (seven years ago) link

The Twitter stuff isn't really representative of his TV comedy. Though I find the repetition and bloody-mindedness of his Twitter does sort of amuse me in a way.

In general with Limmy it's not a love it or hate it thing, but I definitely have recommended him to a few friends who saw no value in his sketches whatsoever.

I also think it's really clear from a lot of the sketches that he has been a major raver at some point, I can't pinpoint this in every sketch but his humour is definitely of that brand to me.

this one is probably the best, for me, a great sketch with a completely meaningless ending that just makes it even funnier:

My dad frequently tells me how much he loves the sketch with the magic picture frame and his dad in it. Limmy's humour is at its best when it reflects that particular Scottish sense of neither being derogatory /laughing at somebody's expense nor self deprecating - just funny because it is.

Burnistoun (although equally prone to misfires) stomps all over it with Jolly Boy John.

Much as I love Burnistoun and agree that both are hit and miss, I think Limmy's highs are higher.

I once spent half an hour suppressing giggles on a train after my brother texted "d'ye want this mushroom" to me.

I've followed and unfollowed Limmy several times on twitter. He's hard work sometimes. I used to occasionally watch his webcam stuff too.

Looking forward to the new series. S2 was brilliant. Easily the best British sketch show (not that there's much competition) since The Fast Show and arguably more inventive.

Each to their own, but I find it surprising that people say Limmy is hit and miss compared to Burnistoun. There are a few great Burnistoun sketches (2 Litre Bottle of Ginger, The Lift, the single issue MP, er that's about it) but it's always been seriously patchy. The latest series was piss poor; lazy writing, a lack of imagination. With stuff like Jolly Boy John it's as if they're trying to go for the weirdness of Limmy, but it totally falls flat and just comes across as the sort of 'random' wacky shit Limmy takes the piss out of so well (youtube the Limmy 'random' sketch from the pilot - one of my favourites).

agree slightly about s2 being better than the first, but i can watch both over and over, soaking it up like whale noise. can't do this with any other tv show at all ever, there's something almost songlike and rhythmic about his stuff

vague mutterings online about a beef between him and his older brother, saying limmy jr robbed a lot of material from his bro. apparently elder limmy did 'requiem' for real in the 80s which is kinda horrifying if still a bit amusing

worth checking him out too, his twitter stuff is mostly football rants but there are gems like this on soundcloud and youtube:

non-euclidean lenin (bizarro gazzara), Sunday, 27 October 2019 06:49 (seven months ago) link

He doesnt seem like an arsehole to me. In the autobio he talks about not really having friends in primary school, and how his mother never told him that she loved him or cuddled him or anything (and obviously same with his da) and he is completely disinterested and unmoved when she suddenly gets ill and dies when hes in his late teens. He also just generally has difficulties forming relationships with people and is a fairly, to his own admission, bad father (though his love for his son is about the only strong emotion towards a person that he seems to have).

Seany's too Dyche to mention (jim in vancouver), Sunday, 27 October 2019 07:10 (seven months ago) link

I mean that sounds like a bit of an arsehole? But he talks about feeling like he has something missing, that's kind of more the vibe.

This series plays out like a terrible anxiety dream to me and a pretty good example of why you need to work with other people to make a TV show. The other players on his previous shows were so good and necessary. The effect here is so suffocating it makes me hyperventilate to even watch it. I'm a fan but I'd say this is about 10% funny and about 60% horrifying and about 30% thankfully, helpfully, "don't care".

Heavy Messages (jed_), Wednesday, 6 May 2020 02:05 (four weeks ago) link

Heavy Messages (jed_), Wednesday, 6 May 2020 02:22 (four weeks ago) link

I liked the way that some of the bits eventually pay off into something like a conventional punchline and some of them just leave you hanging. I agree about the anxiety dream thing, it's easy to imagine a sketch like the one with the guy's mate not liking the film he recommended being done with the shorter guy from Limmy's Show as the mate, but it feels so much more claustrophobic without them

soref, Wednesday, 6 May 2020 07:02 (four weeks ago) link

It does feel weirdly appropriate for the moment, that claustrophobia, though. Lot of people rattling about alone indoors with their thoughts rn. Watched e3 last night and had tears running down my face.
