PC music

Killarney Hilton (darraghmac), Saturday, 13 June 2015 23:28 (two years ago) Permalink

a few things but maybe the most simple explanation is 'imago'

Merdeyeux, Saturday, 13 June 2015 23:33 (two years ago) Permalink

certain amount of content when hipster racism {(c) carmen van kerckhove} was at issue then just lj being even more thick than usual when it went back to aesthetics

The Fields of Karlhenry (nakhchivan), Saturday, 13 June 2015 23:41 (two years ago) Permalink

trying chivalrously to plead in mitigation for a shit racist was a fool's errand but the aesthetic idiocy was so dispiriting because of all the shit music in the world, pc music has enough paratextual grist to make a competent defence for

The Fields of Karlhenry (nakhchivan), Sunday, 14 June 2015 00:16 (two years ago) Permalink

see for example

http://www.vice.com/en_uk/read/pc-music-are-they-really-the-worst-thing-to-ever-happen-to-dance-music-clive-martin-017

nb this is an argument about the argument not an invitation to reopen it here

The Fields of Karlhenry (nakhchivan), Sunday, 14 June 2015 00:21 (two years ago) Permalink

appreciate the comprehensive response ty folks

Killarney Hilton (darraghmac), Sunday, 14 June 2015 00:50 (two years ago) Permalink

Meh, no-one is convincingly energised about the "hipster racism". It's really just an endless debate about whether PC Music music is good or shit.

everything, Sunday, 14 June 2015 01:14 (two years ago) Permalink

oh thanks nakhers! too kind

imago, Sunday, 14 June 2015 08:31 (two years ago) Permalink

tbh my mistake was to eventually in sheer frustration (after thomp made some brilliant posts that were almost completely ignored) make it about the paratext (their 'youth' and experimental outlook) rather than the music, which is perfectly defensible in an aesthetic sense; that clive martin thing largely keeps it to that and uses the paratext as a means of fleshing out the arguments against

anyway, you take away my aesthetics and what have i left, this is bloody murder

imago, Sunday, 14 June 2015 08:42 (two years ago) Permalink

dick pics?

let he who has not approved of the ronaldinho bottle opener cast the (sarahell), Sunday, 14 June 2015 16:15 (two years ago) Permalink

nor did you engage with the thomp posts beyond saying how brilliant they were, any earnest wall of text containing a defence of something you like appeals to your vanity even if its author disclaims association with you and employs different rhetoric

sanctimoniously upbraiding other people who didn't engage with it is absurd but then you did the same in reference to

i) people failing to empathize with racists
ii) and the particular difficulties young haut-bourgeois racists have by virtue of their natural naivete about difference
iii) people failing to appreciate the vigour of youthful music (= music you like made by people age 0-70)
iv) and failing to appreciate pop music as such
v) and failing to appreciate para-pop music made by partially educated morons in particular
vi) people failing to credit 'sorry this is just how i feel' and other last resort appeals to your own authority that are not immediately persuasive outside of your own mind

the paratext is important here because the litany of justificatory material published by pc music themselves allows an apologist to reply to 'they sound like shit' with elaborate false-consciousness arguments for why they sound shit only to the uninitiated; you edged onto this territory but failed for lack of tact, cold blood, and knowledge of pop music (relative to your dissenters)

乒gl乓 (nakhchivan), Sunday, 14 June 2015 21:46 (two years ago) Permalink

ah now if only my university professors had employed your methods

imago, Sunday, 14 June 2015 21:51 (two years ago) Permalink

if you were a congenital moron it would be different but you can do a lot better (that is if you want to make a good case for the objects of your affection, if you want to provide endless 400+ post cadenzas of nonsense then continue as is)

乒gl乓 (nakhchivan), Sunday, 14 June 2015 21:57 (two years ago) Permalink

i suppose the lesson here is to not upbraid unless you have sufficient ammunition to support the upbraiding - i came to the fight underprepared, and improvised badly in my huff, appealing to some inculcated suspicion of naivete without considering whether naivete is a) a laudable attribute or b) whether the hipster racism, let alone the para-pop music, was even particularly naive

i wasn't trying to set up a false consciousness argument, merely assert that the stock position of no-caveats dismissiveness didn't allow for the possibility of the music having any merit external to one's experience - perhaps a touch more sangfroid and nakhic hardasstrelsy could have suited this purpose, rather than the simpering assertions of musical quality it got

your tough love is i suppose appreciated, and i am not too proud to refute the position of student

imago, Sunday, 14 June 2015 22:01 (two years ago) Permalink

and improvised badly in my huff, appealing to some inculcated suspicion of naivete

don't care about any of this but wanna say as someone much less smart than you who loses many arguments this particular tack was totally crazy

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Sunday, 17 September 2017 23:10 (two months ago) Permalink

D-40 is OTM about that thread. It's transparently obvious, both in the way that people are grasping for criticism of Coates' most recent essay and the way Joy Reid's article that made the exact same fucking points in the context of a slightly different argument and everyone who decided to comment ridiculed it for either being too obvious an argument to bother making or too classist towards poor white people, to which I say fuck your tacit support of white supremacy and look in a fucking mirror, assholes.

we had heard stories of one who could see clearly. he does not protest the task of being the solitary carrier of truth, but we all know it must be a burden. they say he knows of a way to listen to the white album that would somehow ruin every ounce of positive feelings one ever had about the album, and that he wants everyone to listen to the album in this way, or else acknowledge that they are wrong. wrong about music. we know we are wrong, but we no longer know who is right. some good side discussions of the two albums in that thread as well, though
