Awesome! I haven't watched the Lord of the Rings movies in a couple of years so this will seem fresh.

Totally. I had read Lord of the Rings before I stumbled onto Sword, but hadn't gone backwards to The Silmarillion and Lost Tales and such by the time Elfstones came out so I didn't know he was mining them too.

I think once the books wrap next year it'll come right along. Especially when they realize that if you cut out all the internal monologues you've got just enough plot for a 2 1/2 hour movie.

Is Terry Brooks or the other guy, Goodkind, I think, has all the bizarro political ideologies that he decided to start cramming into his later books?

Yup, Goodkind.

Terry Goodkind: Ayn Rand is the inventor of the objectivist philosophy. I consider her the greatest thinker since Aristotle. She made advances in the world of philosophy that no one since Aristotle has made....

I wouldn't read them again, mind you
― DARING PRINCESS (DJP), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 14:35 (eleven years ago) link
Yeah, as a 12-yr-old fantasy nerd I dug them on a sort of "I wish I had more LOTR books to read" basis. I think I read the first three and by then I was not into it anymore. I remember absolutely nothing about them. Like, not even the names of any of the characters.

As we reported last year, the pilot is being written by former Smallville showrunners Miles Millar and Al Gough. Jon Favreau was signed up to direct, but is now just producing, due to a scheduling conflict. Instead, the first two episodes will be directed by Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles). It's sort of interesting that they're skipping over the first novel and adapting the second instead — but the second book is less obviously beholden to Lord of the Rings, and lets the show have an intense plot about the elves' magic failing and the evil Dagda Mor trying to return to the world. It'll be interesting to see MTV try to do something with the scale and ambition of Game of Thrones, but the youth-oriented snark of Smallville and MTV's own Teen Wolf.
