Awesome! I haven't watched the Lord of the Rings movies in a couple of years so this will seem fresh.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 01:21 (eleven years ago) link

Hauntingly fresh.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 01:22 (eleven years ago) link

Unless the get the Brothers Hildebrandt to do all the conceptual work it just won't be right.

mookieproof, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 01:55 (eleven years ago) link

Totally. I had read Lord of the Rings before I stumbled onto Sword, but hadn't gone backwards to The Silmarillion and Lost Tales and such by the time Elfstones came out so I didn't know he was mining them too.

"Those aren't silmarils! Those are elfstones."

dude just changed the directions on the map, huh

A perfect summary.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 02:03 (eleven years ago) link

when will there be a wheel of time series?

blank, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 02:08 (eleven years ago) link

I think once the books wrap next year it'll come right along. Especially when they realize that if you cut out all the internal monologues you've got just enough plot for a 2 1/2 hour movie.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 02:11 (eleven years ago) link

The next Legend of the Seeker.

Träumerei, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 02:19 (eleven years ago) link

There are few things as delightful as Ned's blinding hatred for Terry Brooks

DARING PRINCESS (DJP), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 02:28 (eleven years ago) link

It is endearing.

NR’s resident heavy-metal expert (Nicole), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 02:30 (eleven years ago) link

Is Terry Brooks or the other guy, Goodkind, I think, has all the bizarro political ideologies that he decided to start cramming into his later books?

Fiendish Doctor Wu (kingfish), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 02:31 (eleven years ago) link

Are one of them nutters? I thought the only big name crazy was Card.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 02:32 (eleven years ago) link

Yup, Goodkind.

http://fantasybookcritic.blogspot.com/2007/12/interview-with-terry-goodkind.html

Terry Goodkind: Ayn Rand is the inventor of the objectivist philosophy. I consider her the greatest thinker since Aristotle. She made advances in the world of philosophy that no one since Aristotle has made....

And he goes on from there

Fiendish Doctor Wu (kingfish), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 02:54 (eleven years ago) link

Happy to say I made it about 50 pages into his first book before it made me want to gouge out my eyes.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 02:58 (eleven years ago) link

even as a twelve year old fantasy nerd i knew these books were straight garbage.
THAT SAID, i love shitty fantasy tv shows.

one dis leads to another (ian), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 14:32 (eleven years ago) link

not gonna lie, I loved the first two Shannara books

I wouldn't read them again, mind you

DARING PRINCESS (DJP), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 14:35 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, as a 12-yr-old fantasy nerd I dug them on a sort of "I wish I had more LOTR books to read" basis. I think I read the first three and by then I was not into it anymore. I remember absolutely nothing about them. Like, not even the names of any of the characters.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 14:37 (eleven years ago) link

the best book Brooks ever wrote was Magic Kingdom For Sale, anyway

DARING PRINCESS (DJP), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 15:06 (eleven years ago) link

I haven't read these books but I will watch the shit out of this

we don't wanna miss a THING!!! (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 15:24 (eleven years ago) link

heads up: it will be terrible

DARING PRINCESS (DJP), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 15:40 (eleven years ago) link

i had no idea these books were set in the future. i used to listen to the album of the first book at the library when i was a kid.

Oh my god. How in the world had I not figured out that there would be YouTube clips of people reading favorite literature of theirs. The 'acoustic guitar bedroom cover version' of the lit world:

IT'S HAPPENING

As we reported last year, the pilot is being written by former Smallville showrunners Miles Millar and Al Gough. Jon Favreau was signed up to direct, but is now just producing, due to a scheduling conflict. Instead, the first two episodes will be directed by Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles).

It's sort of interesting that they're skipping over the first novel and adapting the second instead — but the second book is less obviously beholden to Lord of the Rings, and lets the show have an intense plot about the elves' magic failing and the evil Dagda Mor trying to return to the world. It'll be interesting to see MTV try to do something with the scale and ambition of Game of Thrones, but the youth-oriented snark of Smallville and MTV's own Teen Wolf.

the crickets were wrong, tim f is right -- another friend described it as "shitmazing" and this is even more correct

I think shitmazing works well. I can't say it was at all good but I binged on it and enjoyed it more than the last 4 years of Game of Thrones.
