This Monday, early evening?

jon (jon), Thursday, 19 September 2002 10:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Hmmm Monday, an untried day for FAP action. If it's central I can do it but not early.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 19 September 2002 11:01 (seventeen years ago) link

What Tom said, and I'll likely slink away before long because I am a sick man.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 19 September 2002 11:02 (seventeen years ago) link

i think so, i want to celebrate my new house (as i'm doing tonite, tomorrow night, and sunday night)

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 19 September 2002 11:03 (seventeen years ago) link

Are you really allowing an unsteered FAP to go ahead??????

I'm not quite mentalist to come back from Manchester after less than 24 hours there.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 19 September 2002 11:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Well I'm well up for this. I'm meeting my new boss re 'please pay me off I don't want to work for you' that afternoon and will vcery ready for a pint in the evening. The prospect of an an e-blind date such as this (I'm an FAP virgin) will provide a nice silver lining to the day.

Later is fine, as long as I can get a train out of Paddington before the Wiltshire Curfew.

And I'll be on Regent St so anywhere West End would be great. If it were less than 10 minutes walk from the Bakerloo line it would maximise my drinking time. But I'm a fast walker.

jon (jon), Thursday, 19 September 2002 11:13 (seventeen years ago) link

great idea. i will be SINGING though, so no, probs not

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 19 September 2002 11:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Hmm, well you know I frown upon such unsteered events but I might be able to squeeze a couple of beers in next Monday. I think the steering committee should pickj the pub though. But ho - something new?

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 19 September 2002 12:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Steering Commttee? Steered/Unsteered?

There's more to this than I thought... it was just an e-whim, honest.

Well, whoever chooses make it nearish Bakerloo Line (Oxford Circus/Picc Circus) and I'll be there.

What happens next? Do the minutes of the meeting get minuted? Does someone review the minutes of the lsat meeting? Can I doodle while pretending to look intelligently interested?

jon (jon), Thursday, 19 September 2002 12:54 (seventeen years ago) link

i caddot cob i'b afraid cos i've got dis terrible cold!

katie (katie), Thursday, 19 September 2002 13:01 (seventeen years ago) link

mmmm.... somewhere new...

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 19 September 2002 13:02 (seventeen years ago) link

The only pub I know round there is the place we all drink in at work. it's called the Windmill and is on a side road parrallel to Regent St on the W side.

But I'm happy to try somewwhere new (and may not be allowed to make suggestions...)

jon (jon), Thursday, 19 September 2002 13:10 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm on for this, but won't stay late unless there is a tube strike the next day, in which case I shall be taking that day off.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 19 September 2002 16:56 (seventeen years ago) link

Ok everyone, who's going to fix a pub?

I won't have web access on Monday, and would hate to miss out, having made the suggestion.

jon (jon), Friday, 20 September 2002 07:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Never drinking again. My life is a RUIN this morning. I woke up in tights, dress and jacket with handbag still on arm. I feel sick, Never drinking again.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 20 September 2002 09:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Any ideas anyone? Horse and Groom on Great Portland Street? I can't make any claims for its quality because I haven't been there since 1989. But fancyapint.com gives it one pint out of five so it can't be all bad...

http://www.fancyapint.com/thepubs/pub30.htm

I don't know why I'm suggesting Sam Smiths pubs when it doesn't matter to me because I'm tragically off the booze again. Sob.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 20 September 2002 09:26 (seventeen years ago) link

''I feel sick, Never drinking again.''

yes...sure you aren't. a pint of coke for you in future then.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 20 September 2002 09:31 (seventeen years ago) link

My termini are Notting Hill Gate and M.Arch so somewhere on the central line would be best for me.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 20 September 2002 09:35 (seventeen years ago) link

My life is a RUIN this morning.>

ditto, and its the braindance brockup tonite. oh, why do i do it?

gareth (gareth), Friday, 20 September 2002 09:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Central Line and Bakerloo Line? Sounds like Oxford Circus:

http://www.fancyapint.com/tube/stations/T196.htm

Tim (Tim), Friday, 20 September 2002 10:03 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah i'm in

mark s (mark s), Friday, 20 September 2002 10:06 (seventeen years ago) link

OK Mark why don't we make Monday our meet-up...especially as I think celebrations are in order heh :-) don't forget to bring the NLRs!

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 20 September 2002 11:15 (seventeen years ago) link

OK Marcello good idea.

mark s (mark s), Friday, 20 September 2002 11:16 (seventeen years ago) link

Tim's link says to me:

Ship is good, a little far

Dover Castle looks GREAT - is it hard to find?

Windmill is good too - I know it though, on the other hand you don't

Argyll Arms easy peasy to find and meet at, bar probably unreachable. No fun.

Someone plump for one? How do I recognise you good people?

jon (jon), Friday, 20 September 2002 11:27 (seventeen years ago) link

ILXers are easy to spot, trust your senses.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 20 September 2002 11:28 (seventeen years ago) link

esp smell

mark s (mark s), Friday, 20 September 2002 11:30 (seventeen years ago) link

I suspect the Dover Castle may be a little small for a FAP, but that's always my worry and it's never that much of a problem.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 20 September 2002 11:37 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm off until Monday now, so I look forward to seeing the venue as chosen by t'Committee.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 20 September 2002 11:51 (seventeen years ago) link

sorry can't do it as I'm having time off (so the last thing to do would be to go to London, even if it is to mett you all). but from monday 30th I'm back so practically any weekday evening from then would be good.

anyway, have fun!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:00 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm off too - but Tim H has kindly emailed me a contact phone number so if I don't get to the web I can still find all of you.

jon (jon), Friday, 20 September 2002 14:34 (seventeen years ago) link

I say the WIndmill. What does everyone else say?

Pete (Pete), Friday, 20 September 2002 14:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Hic!

Sarah (starry), Friday, 20 September 2002 14:41 (seventeen years ago) link

I say let's settle on one, and I'm perfectly happy with The Windmill. I'll be there pretty early, but as the link says it is patronised by office workers and I will be in a suit and tie, it might not be ideal for Jon to try to spot me. There is a pic on my profile here, though, if that helps.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 20 September 2002 17:04 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm reviving this so we don't lose it. Are we all okay with the Windmill?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 21 September 2002 18:22 (seventeen years ago) link

fine by me. Pic noted. some say 'can't do early', some say 'cant do late'. I guess even 'early' in London is not very early - is 6/6.30ish a good place to start?

jon (jon), Sunday, 22 September 2002 07:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Looks like I might be on for his now. Late-ish doors for me 7.30/8.00 ish. Looking forward to it!!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Sunday, 22 September 2002 09:39 (seventeen years ago) link

I'll be there around six, Jon.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 22 September 2002 11:09 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm possible a sevenish man. I have to introduce a screening of The Royal Tenebaums first. I shall be using the line "Mark S laughed non-stop and so di Dr Vick". Poor overseas students.

Pete (Pete), Sunday, 22 September 2002 12:54 (seventeen years ago) link

I laughed lots too Pete, if you want to build a long list of people who liked it. And relatively new poster hereabouts Tim Bateman has a sister very like Margot! (Not adopted, however.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 22 September 2002 13:52 (seventeen years ago) link

larfed if u please

w.a nozzle

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 22 September 2002 22:37 (seventeen years ago) link

I stand corrected. LArfed (what good thgis is going to do to the international students linguistic skillZor I know not but...)

Pete (Pete), Monday, 23 September 2002 08:10 (seventeen years ago) link

Boss is not in today so I can escape in time for the full revelry I hope.

And my meeting tomorrow has been cancelled so I can have a hangover without fear.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 23 September 2002 08:45 (seventeen years ago) link

so, is it the windmill then? i have decided i can make it, so i shall be there sometimes around 8.05

gareth (gareth), Monday, 23 September 2002 14:23 (seventeen years ago) link

that's where i'm going

mark s (mark s), Monday, 23 September 2002 14:29 (seventeen years ago) link

Did I mention I'm gagging for ale?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 23 September 2002 14:29 (seventeen years ago) link

GO GO GO GO GO

Tom (Groke), Monday, 23 September 2002 14:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Gagging for ALE?? Dr C actually = DOMINATOR C doesn't it??? DOESN'T IT???

Whips gags and CHAINS no doubt.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 23 September 2002 14:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Yes pls.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 23 September 2002 15:01 (seventeen years ago) link

OK OK you beyotches i'll be along for ONE (have washing etc to do but will be in the area for soya milk buying ect) see you there!!

katie (katie), Monday, 23 September 2002 15:23 (seventeen years ago) link

Bastards.

Graham (graham), Monday, 23 September 2002 16:49 (seventeen years ago) link

"If every time I lost a case I was called on to resign I would probably have never had a practice," says Geoffrey Cox.

*smile at camera*

nashwan, Wednesday, 25 September 2019 11:37 (three weeks ago) link

oops ha ha

probably in for this tho, WHENEVER

nashwan, Wednesday, 25 September 2019 11:38 (three weeks ago) link

Cool let's see where we're at. We could delay till end of month.

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 25 September 2019 11:40 (three weeks ago) link

The soon to be sacked Geoffrey Cox also welcome.

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 25 September 2019 11:40 (three weeks ago) link

Drinks are on him, though - literally or not left to individual taste.

(I could also make this!)

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 25 September 2019 11:53 (three weeks ago) link

i think i can make this (effortfully walls five metres down road) tho like stet next week not amazing.

Fizzles, Wednesday, 25 September 2019 19:49 (three weeks ago) link

thread is lacking plax imo.

Fizzles, Wednesday, 25 September 2019 19:53 (three weeks ago) link

be good to see Andrew F who i conversed with for about two minutes at the last FAP where both of us were present. the rest of you i can take or leave obv.

Fizzles, Wednesday, 25 September 2019 19:54 (three weeks ago) link

Next Thursday would work. Since it sounds like some can’t make it we could do another towards the end of the month/start of Nov?

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 26 September 2019 09:34 (three weeks ago) link

Sounds good.

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 26 September 2019 09:46 (three weeks ago) link

Let's go for the commercial

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 26 September 2019 09:46 (three weeks ago) link

I agree with Fizzles.

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 26 September 2019 10:10 (three weeks ago) link

So are we doing this thing then?

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 2 October 2019 09:02 (two weeks ago) link

I am planning to be there (though the chances are I won't make it until about 7.30).

Tim, Wednesday, 2 October 2019 09:05 (two weeks ago) link

Fuck, I'm not sure about this one, plus it's tomorrow!

Let them eat Pfifferlinge an Schneckensauce (Tom D.), Wednesday, 2 October 2019 09:13 (two weeks ago) link

I will swing by, but probably not for long.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 2 October 2019 09:15 (two weeks ago) link

Will be there by six-ish I reckon.

See you then!

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 2 October 2019 10:02 (two weeks ago) link

Fizzles? Farrell? Poo?

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 2 October 2019 14:55 (two weeks ago) link

No worries if this experiment in non-central drinking yields low numbers or you all want to do something at the end of the month I'll be at the commercial reading over a drink anyway.

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 3 October 2019 08:24 (two weeks ago) link

I hope to attend.

the pinefox, Thursday, 3 October 2019 08:29 (two weeks ago) link

All being well I'll have a finished copy of the book I've been working on for a couple of years - I did the final print run last night.

Tim, Thursday, 3 October 2019 08:41 (two weeks ago) link

Ooh that’s exciting. PF I was just coming to check if you were.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 3 October 2019 08:43 (two weeks ago) link

I'm going to have to play this one by ear I think. Might see you later. Will be there at 7ish if I am coming

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 3 October 2019 09:43 (two weeks ago) link

Aw hope you do.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 3 October 2019 09:51 (two weeks ago) link

Will prob get there around 6:15

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 3 October 2019 15:50 (two weeks ago) link

Cool

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 3 October 2019 16:13 (two weeks ago) link

Or 6:50 because the trains fucking suck.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 3 October 2019 17:46 (two weeks ago) link

Cool, just got to the commercial now

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 3 October 2019 17:47 (two weeks ago) link

Good group of us here now! 👍

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 3 October 2019 18:26 (two weeks ago) link

regards to some 😘

all over bar the shouting (im here for the shouting) (darraghmac), Thursday, 3 October 2019 19:52 (two weeks ago) link

"Is E____ terrorising you?"
"She's doing as she does"

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 3 October 2019 20:01 (two weeks ago) link

That almost went horribly wrong. All the trains from Herne Hill were cancelled but I managed to get a bus and 2 tubes to London Bridge and my train arrives in 7 minutes. then in theory I get a bus from Tunbridge Wells and I get home about 2:30 if I'm lucky...

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 3 October 2019 22:48 (two weeks ago) link

Once again I completely avoided talking to Fizzles. I swear I'm not doing this deliberately

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 3 October 2019 22:49 (two weeks ago) link

Blimey, for once things are working out, if my train existed I would be arriving at Hastings now but the bus actually turned up this time and just stopped at Battle so I might even get home before 2!

Colonel Poo, Friday, 4 October 2019 00:34 (two weeks ago) link

Hope you got home ok

xyzzzz__, Friday, 4 October 2019 05:35 (two weeks ago) link

Thanks all for a nice eve

xyzzzz__, Friday, 4 October 2019 05:36 (two weeks ago) link

I had a fine time, thanks all.

Fizzles, this was the book I was recommending: https://www.influxpress.com/attrib-and-other-stories

Tim, Friday, 4 October 2019 06:10 (two weeks ago) link

Thanks Tim. And it's always a real pleasure - doubly so to see ilx faces in your familiar local. Colonel Poo's frosty high-hatting of me notwithstanding.

Fizzles, Friday, 4 October 2019 12:40 (two weeks ago) link

having popped back in the commercial while waiting for a chinese takeaway i realise pinefox’s pleasantry about Belly was in fact anchored in the actual music they were playing.

Fizzles, Friday, 4 October 2019 21:03 (two weeks ago) link

I had a fine time, thanks all.

Fizzles, this was the book I was recommending: https://www.influxpress.com/attrib-and-other-stories🕸

this is excellent - thanks Tim.

Fizzles, Monday, 7 October 2019 07:10 (one week ago) link

That book sounds quite worth looking at!

Fizzles, if I mentioned Belly it was because they were playing 'Feed The Tree'.

the pinefox, Monday, 7 October 2019 10:04 (one week ago) link

Ah, yes, that's what they were playing the other night as well.

Eley Williams has enormous fun with the sound and look of language, and the heft of words and their relation to perception and memory. Normally I'm a little wary of the poeticisation of prose, but I don't think that's what's happening here. It reminds me more of Robert Louis Stevenson's approach to sentence construction, where he recommends an awareness of the patterns of sound across sentences. Love and loss are specifically realised through this prism of language and thought, which makes their representation more elliptical than more conventional representations of those emotions, but more pointed, more tender, with a bursting sense of things felt but not directly expressed so that, to quote Isaac Rosenberg, they are 'understandable but still ungraspable'.

Fizzles, Monday, 7 October 2019 11:01 (one week ago) link

A brutal comedown.

Thanks to everyone who has come to find me in Brixton - now having lunch in Morley’s - out and about again at about 1 pic.twitter.com/CiJsiFOVhb
