my list turned out like 33 percent canon, 33 percent childhood faves, 33 percent indefensible nonsense.

unlike ed3, i was surprised how many 21st century flicks showed.

I think my list is relatively canon - I'm expecting the majority of my top ten to place, and place high.

Seeing as I did a decade breakdown of my ballot for the comedy poll, I figured it wouldn't be too spoilery to do one for this:

Nothing from this decade, and the two most recent films in my top 15 are six and seventeen years old, respectively.

OK, I'm not quite finished tabulating the ballots I have. It's still short of 50, but even if it weren't, I'm making this announcement official:

Balloting will be held open for at least another 36 hours and possibly longer if I feel lazy or generous.

Hence, I will still accept ballots provided they reach my inbox until 11 a.m. EST on Wednesday. Possibly a little longer, but I need to get st3v3 working on images so I can unveil the results starting next week.

This is like that slacker sculpture class I was in, where I felt accomplished for finishing at the last minute rather than (like half of the rest of the class) two weeks beyond deadline.

jeez, if we got another couple days, i wanna pull and rejigger my ballot. not a want in need of actualization though...

So as if to sanctify the end of the horror poll, I went into a pawn shop tonight and they had an unopened copy of the 4 disc ultimate edition of dawn of the dead that was unpriced, and when I brought it up to the counter the kid just looked up "dawn of the dead" and charged me 99 cents.

Ballot sent, obvious omissions already piling up in my head, but whatever. Don't want to bother with decade count right now for all 50, but in my top 10, four are from the '70s, two each from the '60s and '80s, and one each from the '20s and '90s.

I had no guiding principle that I could articulate, but I was surprised how some movies I like and would have guessed were easy contenders for top 20 didn't make it onto my list of 50.

It is no coincidence that a good chunk of my top 10 came out while I was between 8 and 14.

any thoughts on whther to start w/the extended or the european cut? pretty sure the one that i have seen is the american theatrical

also buying that set was another moment of horrible ballot facepalming for me because dawn of the dead didnt make it, although i love it

47 ballots in as of (almost) midnight. Very close to my own personal goal of 50!

I don't want to call any holdouts on this thread, and I won't. But there are a couple big holdouts I'll be disappointed to not see a ballot from, is all I'm saying.

(Though I draw the line at emailing them directly.)

honestly, i think the best version of DotD is the unrated american theatrical original that you probably grew up with. moves, contains all the essential business, became a classic for a reason. extended version is a nice companion piece, but the movie was hardly a model of efficiency to begin with (unlike NotLD), so the extension does it no real favors. european version is cool too, but substantially different, reedited and rescored by argento, a curiosity.

One argument for watching Argento's cut is that it lays the emotional and philosophical groundwork that gives one a richer appreciation of watching a zombie wrestle a shark.

(I would never in a million years claim that Zombi 2 is an even remotely good movie, but that particular scene is in the top 100 of film history.)

and "they are going to eat you" is one of the better tag lines for a film

lol, this is my favorite theme in horror. why i love stuart gordon's dagon so much. course that's dread leading to acceptance, not quite celebration, cept in my own private rituals, but still...

Whis is a pity cause some of them I suppose are candidates for my personal Top20 and I'm sure I will painfully regret the omission in more than one case.

Instead and of all possible stuff lying around I watched The Mephisto Waltz some days ago, oddball satanist/pianist thriller in the wake of Rosemary's Baby, with an incredibly (in a good way) corny Curd Jürgens and an almost equally (but in a bad way) corny Alan Alda.

Added it at the end of my ballot, for laughs, a rather good silvester-orgy scene and the sight of always delightful Jaqueline Bisset.

I ended up cutting some of the more avant-garde stuff from my ballot, sadly. I think my last ten were more for me to rep for some silly things that I have a lot of affection for. Regretting not voting for Street Trash now, too...

considered voting for street trash for its excellent melting sequences but then I remembered that long rape scene set to benny hill music
