has anyone seen this?

i keep occassionally catching the odd episode at random times on sci fi but am buggered if i can work out what it's about. it seems quite interesting, just slightly impenetrable. at least to someone who started watching it halfway through the series. can anyone provide a plot synopsis and say whether its worth sticking with or not?

i also thought it was a kids anime, given that it was on at lunchtimes. however, given the occassional bit of nudity and lesbian sex it's probably only appropriate for kids that have googled for Sailor Moon and ended up on a Pokemon Porn hentai site.

Its the only anime i have evah stand to watch and it simply fantastic u highly recomend watching it, though not from the halfway, the story is pretty much made on details and i think seeing it from halfway should really put a lot down

Is this the one with the Penguin? I think they battle these demons called "Angels" that are just generally bad ass, they destroyed half teh population of Earth or something like that. The kids of NERV are the only ones who can fit in the battle suits, is teh somewhat shaky premise. Yeah, I kinda like this one.

Very impenetrable, even for those who have seen the whole series. But interesting nonetheless.

It's deconstruction of the giant-robot genre is very well done because it dared to also include it's materialist support, the otaku community.

Here instead of using the feedback of their consumers and giving them the escapism fantasy they came to expect, the narration works on the fears of an antisocial guy and confront him to the other.

The "reality check" was recieved as a bravade by both fans and the industry! (But somehow I think it doesn't matter since the importance of Eva is now undisputed.)

The author being a Ûber-Otaku himself made his point eaven more twisted, isn'it?

They made a considerable research for this project; loads of references to theology, wwII, post wwII pop culture and it's avant-garde, history of anime etc so it makes it extra-fun for fans to talk about it and share interpretations. The 2 last episodes are fantastic, like a metaphysic of the anime. ANNO HIDEAKI rules! anyone've seen his latest stuff?

the Hegemon, Saturday, 14 September 2002 05:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

classic for the fact that the fans were so outraged by the last two episodes that they demanded a film version delivering a more "traditional" happy ending, if nothing else.

So anyway, I watched this whole deal, including the End of Evangelion movie. The series started out ok, but I kept thinking that I was too old to be watching this, and that all of the characters seemed dreampt up by some 14 year old kid (let alone the main characters actually being 14). But as it went on, and especially in the last movie, it got into some pretty out there things, kind of along the same lines as Kubrick's 2001. When it was over, I just stared at the tv for a while, and now I'm debating whether or not to go through the movie again. Except, since the message of it seemed to be that you shouldn't escape into fantasy to get away from real life, I don't think it's the right thing to do. WTF????

Also, the animation in that movie was probably the best stuff I've seen outside of, say, Fantasia.

dleone (dleone), Monday, 26 January 2004 13:18 (twenty years ago) link

The last two episodes of the TV show ended up being the way they were because the studio had blown all of its money by that point. Reused animations cleverly disguised as "art," but very well done nonetheless.

The End of Envanglion was created later after the series became a huge success and they had funds to do a proper ending with mecha battles and so forth.

The creator of the series was battling depression at the time, which explains alot. He also admitted that the Christian/Kabalah references were just window dressing and didn't have any real bearing on the plot, which pissed me off (I guess its too much too expect the Japanese to have weird insights into Western Theology). Like a lot of anime, its not as deep as it first appears, just incomprehensible and filled with non-sequitors.

I think FLCL toppped NGE's animation.

..., Monday, 26 January 2004 14:16 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, all the religious stuff, I wasn't too sure about. And depression, I guess isn't hard to believe, especially being that the whole thing seemed to say, "life is hard, deal with it".

I loved this series the first time through but when I tried to rewatch it, I couldn't tolerate Shinji's whining. I only got through a few episodes before I was muttering, "Shutupshutupshutupshutupshutup," uncontrollably.

Maybe it had something to do with having seen the ending. The end of the movie is a total cop-out, right? I don't want to give anything away (and I don't recall many details anyway) but I remember feeling ripped off.

lmao ya me 2 (that point in my lyfe being when i was 14 - perfect age for it really, since at no other point in ure life will that particular brand of narcissistic doom-angst resonate so distinctly)

imo it's best interpreted as an extremely hateful sequel to otaku no video - the whole thing boils over with anno's rage & disgust w/himself and w/his audience, which in turn casts a darkly funny light on the show's legacy, tho otoh i have recently come to understand that GAINAX is doing a series of evangelion movies w/the promise that it will retell the story in a more conventional and straightforward fashion, to make it accessible for a broader audience - i guess that says something about where anno's at in his life now (i know he got married a few years ago), or maybe it just means he has nothing better to do than remake gunbuster for the 93rd time

the scene from end of evangelion where asuka is eaten alive still gives me, like, emotions btw ;_;

just watched the first two episodes and there are some moments of true beauty - the cut from shinji seemingly losing his battle with the angel to a blindingly white hospital bed and the "unfamiliar ceilings" title card is wonderful~~~ and the show has some of the best sound fx in any anime from the bestial groans of the eva in battle to all that perfectly calibrated silence

yah i watched it 1st when i was 13 and i really got sucked in to the alternating ~coolness~ (lol the shadowy cabal meets in a nite black room with glowing neon thrones) and ~heaviness~ of the angst and the alienation amidst this wonderful futurescape. but i think its still "good" or w/e maybe more nuanced than im giving credit for

the whole thing boils over with anno's rage & disgust w/himself and w/his audience, which in turn casts a darkly funny light on the show's legacy

even two episodes in every characters desperation to connect w/another human being is pretty fukken tragic but the amount of self-loathing that shinji feels is pretty lol considering hes the obv audience surrogate

the show has some of the best sound fx in any anime from the bestial groans of the eva in battle to all that perfectly calibrated silence

otm i always loved the way they would isolate the cicadas in quiet outdoor scenes

idk if it's good or nuanced but as someone who basically hates anime i appreciate eva for being so mean and hateful. it was the most influential anime of the decade, but everything it influenced took the 'wrong' cues from it - all the crap with the conspiracies and retarded plucked-from-a-hat religious shit was just window dressing for the 26-episode therapy session of one rageful manchild. that's probably why i liked the movie better than the series, which had a lot of bland monster-of-the-week filler episodes (tho i liked the show's ending fine), stuff like the scene where shinji jerks off over asuka's coma-titties has no room for extra interpretation.

a narwhal done gored my sister nell (cankles), Tuesday, 18 August 2009 06:14 (fourteen years ago) link

haha from here it seems like the most influential anime of the 90s was dragon ball but i def agree with everything else ur saying. eva was unique in how bleak and vicious it could be - watching the sub versions the dude who voices shinji's dad is so menacing and hateful its pretty great.

i guess id just add that eva still feels a lot more "artful" than most anime. its beautifully drawn and we talked about the sound but the editing is fukken aces and it less idk static or flat than a lot of cartoons imo. also i do think theres some nuance - its mostly pretty emo and yah "rageful" is really good word for it - but small moments like shinji sobbing in the cockpit of his eva after the 2nd battle in front of the dude that just knocked him out - there are some slivers of a more grown up empathy and distance in there

retarded plucked-from-a-hat religious shit

lol deathnote

Nhex, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 13:29 (fourteen years ago) link

dragonball couldve been the most influential in america but as far as influencing other anime eva takes the cake. idk a lot of that was pretty by-the-book giant robot melodrama stuff - crying in a robot (the new 'crying in the club') is definitely well-worn territory imo. the 'moments of true beauty' u mentioned earlier were only there for budgetary reasons, ie. it's a tv production so there's lots of panning across still frames and backgrounds, which is why gendo spends half the series with his mouth covered. maybe the fact that eva gave license to every anime that followed it to also be 'artful' and pretentious makes me distrusting of those qualities in eva itself.

also ya lmbo anime imo

a narwhal done gored my sister nell (cankles), Tuesday, 18 August 2009 20:53 (fourteen years ago) link

'starscream ascendant', chapter 9 - transformers fanfic community — this is the only google result for 'crying in a robot'

thomp, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 21:05 (fourteen years ago) link

haha yah it wasnt that shinji crying in da robot was new ground but that the way it was shot and cut and the perspective of the two classmates (lol even drawn the O_O looks on their faces is a+) made it seem more, i guess, than the typical emo pity party thing. idk i thought it was pretty effective @ showing how alienated and ashamed the dude was - even if being alienated and ashamed is kinda de rigeur~~~

sometimes the "artful" stuff is pretentious lol the shot of a lone tennis ball in the rain but i think it works, generally. meh ive been liking it so far what can i say?

All soundtracked by the world's corniest piano suicide ballad which gradually morphs, apparently without anybody involved noticing that this is an odd thing to do, into an "All You Need Is Love" type singalong complete with "A Day In The Life" strings. This from a show that begins with giant robot fights and wacky hijinks revolving around a warm-water penguin.

watched this in a few settings earlier this week. my letterboxd review:

wonderfully bizarre in both structure and content. the first 15 and the last 90 minutes of this comprise a visually overwhelming feature length version of the concluding section of 2001, overlaid with an exhausting onslaught of deliberately impenetrable and meaningless lore. the goal: convince the protagonist, and the audience, that they don't need any of it to be happy. but we get there on our own anyway, through the middle section's oasis of the everyday. seems like a nice place. congratulations!

wish American big-budget blockbusters could take more swings at being nigh-incomprehensible visual art projects with hearts of gold. as a "conclusion" to a "story" this is nigh unwatchable, but let's face it, that train left the station at least two movies back, and really we've been in this other kind of giant robot anime since the last two episodes of the original TV show. i'm still not convinced any of this was necessary... but nor are any big "franchise" "reboots," and just imagine if anybody involved in any of those was interested in doing anything other than filling the screen with familiar images to boost the market value of the underlying intellectual property?

also: i've seen a lot of people complaining about the animation. i thought it looked great? like, yeah, the designs are impossible to take in and the action is impossible to follow (especially when set in an alternate dimension with no ground or other reference points). but it's not like this was going for being a great, grounded action movie. the maximalism of all the stupid new Evas and ships is the point, right? wish i'd seen it on a big screen, with mind set in the proper state to just be blown away by the delirium.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 14 July 2022 15:12 (one year ago) link

the animation throughout the rebuilds is beautiful especially the cgi

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 14 July 2022 15:33 (one year ago) link

ppl bring a lot of baggage to like the whole concept of animation-with-integrated-cg, so even when they're seeing something clearly intended to be unreally/surreally gorgeous and overwhelming they feel like they're being cheated? idk that's my only explanation for it

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 14 July 2022 15:37 (one year ago) link

yeah i think it's just baggage people bring over from tv anime where cg is more often used as a compromise than as a choice, due to tight deadlines and a shortage of 2d animators. if it's being used in a high profile film with a 7 year gestation then there's probably more intentionality to it

ciderpress, Thursday, 14 July 2022 16:11 (one year ago) link

totally. and i mean, my standard here is the original TV series. which cut costs in various ways, but clearly threw a lot of budget into backgrounds, several seconds of incredible animated action per episode, and incredible design work all throughout. (and then well, episodes 25-26...). it's a great looking show overall. and this mostly looks better than that.

the most striking departure really from the original series is the pacing. there's very little in the way of a classic 'evangelion feel' to the way scenes play out or the way transitions between scenes happen. not a lot of long shots of power lines with crickets chirping. conversations are often choppy, just two or three lines back and forth, then jumping back over to somebody else. this contributes to an even greater feeling of unreality for me... this thing where people just act really strange and nobody asks any logical followup questions, which i found really distracting in the first couple Rebuilds but had come to accept by the third. i guess it's all signs of people being afraid to get closer to each other. (is the "hedgehog's dilemma" mentioned by name in this series?)

when applied to lore and world-building, this same approach leads to just a profusion of empty signifiers and unexplained nonsense, which i embraced as silliness and then decided was thematically intentional by the end. making new spears from the black moon to access the imaginary evangelion inside the anti-universe... ahhh sure whatever, i'm on board

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 14 July 2022 17:06 (one year ago) link

BUT i do think this approach hurts 3.0's exploration of Shinji's burden/guilt. i don't even really understand what happened at the end of 2, Shinji sure doesn't, so everybody blaming him for it really seems harsh, and him punishing himself just didn't land for me. they could at least walk him through a powerpoint about it or something. misato finally admits near the end of 3.0+1.0 that, now that she thinks about it, he was a 14-year-old kid doing what she and everyone else was encouraging him to do. would have been nice to fill in the gaps of this thread a little more, for me personally.

five months pass...

just watched the first two episodes and there are some moments of true beauty - the cut from shinji seemingly losing his battle with the angel to a blindingly white hospital bed and the "unfamiliar ceilings" title card is wonderful~~~ and the show has some of the best sound fx in any anime from the bestial groans of the eva in battle to all that perfectly calibrated silence

otm i always loved the way they would isolate the cicadas in quiet outdoor scenes

i watched the whole series for the first time the last couple weeks, and loved the sound throughout. the cicadas cankles mentioned, so good. sometimes you can hear them muffled through walls, i think. also there are some downright ~terrifying~ screams from shinji in the early episodes, when he's first piloting the EVA's and going into battle. i listened with the english overdub so i'm not sure if the screams are the same or not. but they are horrifying.

i'll always attach this show to NAS now because if you watch it on netflix and skip the intro, it cuts straight to the last 2 notes of the theme song (which plays at the end of the 26th episode in modified form, hell yeah), and the letters "NAS" flash on the left side of the screen

Why would you pass up an opportunity to hear Cruel Angel’s Thesis by skipping the intro????

i did give it some solid listens. i was skeptical at first but quickly won over.

i haven't given the plot synopsis/wikipedia a read yet, and i missed a bunch of stuff. episodes 20-24, in particular, i was working on other stuff and falling asleep through half of it while big things were happening. i would keep waking up to the words "the sword of longinus"

shinji's og voice (megumi ogata) is one of the great bloodcurdling screamers of all time

i can and will do a comparison of the screams in the OG vs overdub english version, but i have a suspicion that they just used the OG scream on everything because it is bloodcurdlingly perfect, and it seems out of range for the english actor

(that's just a really good scream)

fuck yes, thank you for finding those. i'm not even much of a scream fanatic! i listen to some heavier music on occasion and i know what gets to me, but it's not like i really know much. but these screams. they are very good! the russian one sounds plausible? i mean it's extreme but so are the other two

it seems out of range for the english actor

since this will likely never come up again i want to go ahead and acknowledge how wrong i was here. the english scream is different and also very good, i think i prefer it. it wavers in a believable way
