It just occurred to me that Gene, who's probably all of what...ten years old?, is well-versed in the basics of menstruation. I love this show.

Was reminded of a girl I knew in college who just HAD to get up onstage at a Clash concert to slap Joe Strummer 'cause she was so turned on. (She succeeded, and was tossed out by security. Or so her story goes.)

The musical numbers during the credits just go from strength to strength.

grr, never get to see/hear 'em because the stupid network always does the shrink-the-credits thing

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Tuesday, 30 April 2013 13:33 (eleven years ago) link

OK so as I just wondered aloud on FB, was the boyband stuff done by Flight of the Conchords by any chance? It didnt exactly *sound* like em but the absurd lyrics and the... cadence of vocal delivery, I guess, really sounded like them! And considering Kristin Schaal is on both shows... it wasnt in the credits so I could just be projecting.

Fuck those last 2 eps were insanely excellent though.

otm. Is Gene the first genderqueer character on prime time?

My brother, girlfriend, & I shotgunned much of the series on a family vacation at my parents house a coupla weeks back and I was reminded that one of the reasons I love the show is the acceptance of all the characters to the weird shit that happens, either blithely or with a shrug. Louise's seance and Bob's immediate joining in on the fun, completely accepting the premise and getting mad when her friends ask dumb questions. Bob getting drunk with and ferrying punters to some trans hookers he meets on a random night. That kinda thing. They will accept the premise of what's going on, but are not afraid to comment on how dumb it can get.

Your Own Personal El Guapo (kingfish), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 03:56 (ten years ago) link

xp Drew Carey's brother on his sitcom was a transvestite, but the writers went out of their way to make sure people knew he was straight, and by the time he got married on the show they dropped the cross dressing altogether. That's about the closest I've ever seen, but Gene is something entirely different.

i watched the first ep of season 2 and i got a very strong whiff of family guy from it i'm sad to say :(

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 10:57 (ten years ago) link

like, somebody says something racist about "immigrants" or something, and it's obviously meant to be "funny" or "ironic" or whatever the fuck but it's just skated over and has no impact on anything, it was just dropped in there, like fucking why? GAHHHHHHH. archer has a few of these little moments too. even one is too many, frankly.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 11:00 (ten years ago) link

Wow. I don't get that at all. "Bob's Burgers" has a solid anchor that "Family Guy" lacks. It's less frenetic, more level headed, dryer. The kids act kooky, but Bob is a solid dude and his wife is sort of like a weirder Marge whose crazy side has gone to the kids. The anarchic "Archer" is more out to gleefully non-sequitur offend, but "Bob's Burgers" has a good heart. When it does aim to offend, it does it in this really surreal innocent sort of way. Which I suppose could be equally off-putting.

Whaaaaat? I don't remember this, but to my recollection people who hold those attitudes on the show are usually made into objects of ridicule.

ok dudes i will give it ONE MORE CHANCE. ONE MORE.

IMO you should watch the episode that starts with Bob teaching Tina how to drive.

Definitely some of the best Tina noises in that episode.

The holiday episodes are all pretty golden, also

tracer you should give it another shot, this show really is the anti-FG. sentimental and warm where FG is cheap and cold. maybe king of the hill is its closest cousin, tho BB has a somewhat giddier pace.

tho a shocking number of ppl i've recommended this show to have cringed and gone "ugh it's not like family guy, is it?" i guess i can't blame them, i feel like half the animated shows on tv at this point have seth macfarlane's grinning specter hovering over them.

For the longest time I had this gnawing feeling that one of my coworkers reminded me of someone...and I recently realized that she reminds me of LINDA!
Not the east-coast accent but the mile-a-minute talking and the funny quirks and omg I wish I could tell her

it makes me like her so much more!

do the cast travel in the same circles as seth macfarlane? he could end up on the show as a guest voice.

Jon Benjamin plays a recurring minor character on FG on occasion.

This show has really grown in quality over time - love it. Making it more and more outlandish and spending less focus on just the restaurant was the right way to go. It's filling my Home Movies void just fine.

Neanderthal, Saturday, 5 October 2013 17:34 (ten years ago) link

I wasn't in love with the first episode, but I may just need to recalibrate my system after a summer away.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 5 October 2013 17:49 (ten years ago) link

This most recent episode was amazing. Every single person in the cast brought their A-game and then some.
