GIRLS talk (the Lena Dunham thread)

i'm not looking to be argumentative (really), but srs question: how long does it generally take you guys to learn the names of characters? i've been going through all the sitcoms i've seen on any regular kind of basis and it turns out that unless I've seen a season or two+ of a show, i rarely know many of the important character's names. i've seen ~8-10 eps of Raising Hope but the only character's name I remember is Martha Plimpton and that's the actress! from new girl i can name schmidt and zooey deschenal (Jes is the character's name iirc actually) but none of the other two roommates. i've seen about 10 eps or so of 2 Broke Girls but i only know Max, Earl and Oleg's names. I don't even remember the other main character's name. i can't name a single character on Veep (tho i can name Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Buster from AD, and My Girl actress)... maybe fodder for a new thread?

i generally never know character names or song titles

i never know song titles even on albums i otherwise know by heart

fictional character names are v v trivial & unless they become really iconic theres not really a reason anyone shd remember them ever

Andrew, I was making the point that I am at least, when I don't remember the names well, identifying them (to myself) by character and/or personal traits and not THE NAMES OF THEIR PARENTS.

So we are on the same side, imo.

I'd like to think that the interest in this show is because everyone thinks it's the best new thing on TV and not because everyone's navel-gazing about their place in the world but

It's not like she made it hard, nak, the first names all start with the same letter as the last. I think this is some kind of commentary on twee white girls' names or something about generations all 'cleverly' getting stuck with their parents' same naming shtick.

i have seen michael mann's crepuscular 2004 masterpiece 'collateral' maybe ten or twelve times, before the last time i saw it i couldn't have told you the name of the protagonists

i couldn't have told you the name of the actors' fathers either, since english lacks patronymics, although from memory thomas cruise mapother is like the IInd or IIIrd iteration of thomas cruise mapothers, so i could have cheated there

i couldn't tell you the names of ANY of the characters on game of thrones except for the dead guy being tony stark and the pimp is pinky

Everyone has something to say about Girls -- I've even had several male friends chime in on how impossible it is for them to relate on any level.
