aka vanilla bean (remy bean), Thursday, 15 March 2012 18:22 (eight years ago) link

i went to red lobster for the first time recently* and was kind of excited to try the "cheddar bay biscuits" which they advertise the shit out of on TV and which sounded delicious (i like cheddar cheese! and biscuits! and, um, inlets). they tasted like movie theater butter™ flavor salt dough.

*or rather the first time i can really remember. i think i went once with my mom when i was a teenager, but it might have been a similar chain seafood place. we were on a road trip, and it was nearly 10 o clock in an unfamiliar town. we stopped at a red lobster (?) after looking around forever for anything open. they seated us but we felt weird because the place was nearly empty. i ordered fish. it tasted like it had been bathed in bleach. was sick for days.

Cheese biscuits look kinda like gougère. I googled them and they're pretty simple - though the fancy ones have scallions cooked in them instead of garlic powder. I might try both.

Breadsticks lose:

http://fortune.com/2014/10/10/starboard-olive-garden-board/

Starboard, which is the second-largest investor in Darden with a 8.8% stake, last month issued a very-detailed nearly 300-page slide presentation that gave details of a potential turnaround plan for Darden’s Olive Garden chain, where it claimed customers had “fond memories, but where we believe execution has recently failed to live up to the brand image.” Some of the top complaints focused on the company’s all-you-can-eat breadsticks, which Darden said were too plentiful and lacked flavor, as well as low alcohol sales compared to rival casual-dining chains and salads that were overfilled and dressed with too much dressing.

The investor’s strategy resonated with two of the world’s largest proxy firms — Glass Lewis & Co. and Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS)–backed Starboard’s full slate of nominees ahead of the meeting. Another firm, Egan-Jones, supported Darden.

A few days after the Starboard presentation, Olive Garden fought back, saying its unlimited breadsticks and salad dressings were working out just fine with customers.

(the linked 300-page slide presentation is also worth flipping through for all you chain casual dining aficionados)

Red Lobster can fuck up fried shrimp. Red Lobster can fuck up rice. But those biscuits are p good.

Enh, even the biscuits were teh suck last time I was at Red Lobster. Everything was horrible. Contenderizer bringing the truth:

they tasted like movie theater butter™ flavor salt dough.

i ordered fish. it tasted like it had been bathed in bleach. was sick for days.

I'm a huge wuss when it comes to eating fish or seafood at anywhere not really really good, either has to be like a reputable beachside clam shack or a nice restaurant. Whereas I will eat pretty much any other garbage anywhere.

They now sell giant boxes of Red Lobster Cheddar Bay Biscuit mix, no reason for anyone to ever have to visit one again.

I can drive

Is there a red lobster in NYC? Confession: I have actually never been to one, let alone had these cheddar biscuits you speak of.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Friday, 10 October 2014 17:22 (five years ago) link

o wait looks like there is even one in Queens Boulevard, which I should know since I drive past it at least once a week. Hmm.

There are multiple olive gardens & TGI Fridays and there's even a Denny's with a cocktail mixologist

Makes me sad, all these flyover state tourists coming to NYC being like "Too many restaurants to choose from, what should we do? Let's go somewhere we trust"

, Friday, 10 October 2014 17:25 (five years ago) link

yeah I knew about those, just couldn't remember if there was a red lobster

I have been to the Dallas BBQ in Chelsea, fwiw. I mean, I've been to many, many different restaurants in this category in my life, just not many in NYC, and never Red Lobster.

Was almost tempted to eat at the Dallas BBQ once late night when most other places ewre closed

Ended up eating at a polish joint that's supposedly well known as a reliable dive

I guess if you're like, a casually dressed middle class family from Oklahoma with four kids, you might not feel comfortable going to some trendy tasting menu hotspot, and it can be really hard to find moderately priced sit-down places in Manhattan these days that don't suck, especially around areas like Times Square.

Don't go to Red Lobster, just mix up some clarified garlic butter and drink it. Essentially the same experience.

Not sure about cheese biscuits or breadsticks, but I went to an Olive Garden in Southern California for the first time last year for a memorial meal for my sister-in-law who I loved, with relatives I hadn't yet met, and it was such a great experience
