xp or simply start drinking whisk(e)y

steer karma (gyac), Wednesday, 29 January 2020 11:00 (four years ago) link

Not a fan, sorry. My alcoholic drugs of choice are craft beer, wine and the occasional glass of cognac.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 29 January 2020 11:00 (four years ago) link

Whenever I check out a new pub here I always ask for their strongest beer on tap, which usually ends up being like 5.5%. I've once been warned by a bartender that it could make for a rough afternoon. Crazy, crazy stuff indeed.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 29 January 2020 11:09 (four years ago) link

They quietly lowered Stella from 5.2% to 4.7% some years back, they got away with a fucking crime and nobody seemed to care!

calzino, Wednesday, 29 January 2020 11:15 (four years ago) link

A special beer pub is the only way to go, to not get 3 or 4% pish on tap. The number of pubs/hip places w/ ~hip beers~ still seems on the rise though, no?

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 29 January 2020 11:16 (four years ago) link

I assume so, yes, but Oxford ain't London.

Pravha is indeed tailor-made for the UK, they apparently did some research and found that Czech lager had too "heavy" a taste for mass consumption and that a "light" version would go down better, so they made something that tastes like carling, you can't say we don't get what we deserve.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 29 January 2020 11:27 (four years ago) link

Harrowing.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 29 January 2020 11:29 (four years ago) link

for a country with an international reputation for drunkenness, the methods we choose to get there are pretty shameful

"stella doing their part to reduce domestic violence tbf"

I find my ability to dodge flying weaponised plates when pissed is just as impaired when returning home drunk on 4.7% stella tbh!

Trying to remember where I was recently when I heard two men, who were older than me, enthusiastically talking up the merits of drinking Bavaria. Bavaria, I thought, wasn’t that the piss we used to drink cheap with Dutch Gold in university?

steer karma (gyac), Wednesday, 29 January 2020 11:40 (four years ago) link

Bavaria is pish, yeah. Wouldn't force it on anyone tbpf

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 29 January 2020 11:58 (four years ago) link

Bavaria's 8.6 is the go-to beer for French hobos.

I used to see a group of Polish factory workers who'd just finished a night-shift supping Tyskie at 7am every morning outside the offie. Had 100% respect for them obv

calzino, Wednesday, 29 January 2020 12:31 (four years ago) link

the fuckers have nobbled Tyskie as well. only 5% now instead of 5.5%

and I noticed they've done the same to Old Rosie cider - used to be 7.3%, now 6.8%

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 29 January 2020 12:39 (four years ago) link

It's fucking bullshit man. I didn't know they'd watered down Tiskies as well ffs

calzino, Wednesday, 29 January 2020 12:41 (four years ago) link

Is an overall decrease in alcohol content even correlated with lower alcohol consumption?

pomenitul, Wednesday, 29 January 2020 12:42 (four years ago) link

a lot of shops round me won't sell any beer or cider over 6.5% so someone thinks it must do

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 29 January 2020 12:46 (four years ago) link

Was surprised to find out that white lightning hasn't been made/sold in over a decade, not anything to be mourned though, frosty jack's was always slightly cheaper and tasted less like sick.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 29 January 2020 12:50 (four years ago) link

mmm can you still get Diamond White?

kinder, Wednesday, 29 January 2020 12:53 (four years ago) link

seems so

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 29 January 2020 12:55 (four years ago) link

ha! It's organic too!

kinder, Wednesday, 29 January 2020 12:57 (four years ago) link

I was once in a pub with a work colleague and I noticed lots of noise coming from the bar. There was a middle aged woman who'd agreed with the landlord if she downed 10 castaways in a row then she get them for free. She waved at me and said hello there Jason and my friend said you oh so you know her then? Yes i said .. it's my mum!

calzino, Wednesday, 29 January 2020 13:01 (four years ago) link

Castaways are lightweight unless you stick a diamond white in them tho and make a Blastaway

GK Chessington's World of Adventure (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 29 January 2020 14:16 (four years ago) link

I knew I'd heard "blastaway" as a booze concoction before but wasn't sure if it was a phantom memory.

calzino, Wednesday, 29 January 2020 14:17 (four years ago) link

I can see why it'd cause them!

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 29 January 2020 14:30 (four years ago) link

This fucking guy on here - https://empegbbs.com/ubbthreads.php/topics/171738/What_ever_happened_to_Castaway

Why in the crap would a dude drink that sissy stuff?

Have a beer man! If you had been caught drinking that stuff at CGNU, you would have gotten the crap beat out of you. Or at least you would have received one million punches in the face.

I spent my first year at uni drinking bubblegum-flavoured slush puppies with vodka, probably a good thing I didn't bump into this chap.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 29 January 2020 14:37 (four years ago) link

ever tried tesco brand pear cider? It's only £2.20 a 4-pack (so cheap it would fall foul of minimum pricing in Scotland) and its good enough for me, but my standards are quite shocking. Not saying i don't like fine ales and porters etc, but I'm almost just as happy drinking cheap piss as long as it is 5% vol as a minimum.

calzino, Wednesday, 29 January 2020 14:47 (four years ago) link

I have been known to drink the Spar equivalent but always regret it

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 29 January 2020 14:51 (four years ago) link

I also once bought my parents a bottle of "charlemagne" which was the same shit but in a champagne bottle

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 29 January 2020 15:01 (four years ago) link

I drank many Blastaways as a teenager as they were £2 each at the shithole nightclub we used to go to (which Camaraderie at Arms Length will probably have also been to at some point - Images (or Images on Glass I believe was its full name)). pretty revolting and I think lead to chundering on more than one occasion

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 29 January 2020 15:07 (four years ago) link

Never went to Images, somehow. Went to Tramps a few times which was like being trapped in a falling lift at the circus, apparently it was better than Images though.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 29 January 2020 15:15 (four years ago) link

at the time, you had to wear a shirt, tie and shoes to get into Tramps on a Saturday - we only went on Thursdays which I think was student night (I guess technically we were students) and it was £1 a pint and you could wear jeans. Tramps was a nicer building but the atmosphere was better in Images. you could easily get into trouble at either though, aggro was never far away!

Images had a very relaxed attitude to underage drinking. You could get in by showing the bouncer your National Insurance card, issued to 15 year olds.

This gallery of Worcester nightlife through the years is just right for this thread - https://www.worcesternews.co.uk/galleries/worcester_nightclubs/#gallery49

I would never get carded when I was 16/17 and I looked younger if anything, no way that would happen now

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 29 January 2020 15:21 (four years ago) link

As an ignorant foreigner those pics are exactly what I imagined upon first encountering this thread's premise. That and fan-made YouTube videos designed to accompany The Lark Ascending as played by Nigel Kennedy.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 29 January 2020 15:24 (four years ago) link

xp I had a phase at 16 where I kept getting ID'd after having no trouble at 15. then we switched pubs and problem went away

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 29 January 2020 15:28 (four years ago) link

i hope somebody finds that cunt, evicts them, then sets them on fucking fire
