tonight's didn't feel as funny as the other recent episodes but it's definitely on a roll this season

prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Thursday, 3 November 2011 02:01 (nine years ago) link

It was the weakest episode, but I still laughed a number of times so it passes the test.

The puns on this show alone: Dogs in Heat, Yeah Buoy, etc...

encarta it (Gukbe), Thursday, 3 November 2011 02:06 (nine years ago) link

not to make a comparison it can't possibly live up to but at its best Happy Endings gives me the 30 Rock feeling of a writer's room just shamelessly and gleefully cramming in every gag they can think of

prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Thursday, 3 November 2011 02:10 (nine years ago) link

Brent Musburger and Fred Savage cameos were pitch-perfect!

Also, I've learned that anytime Savage is directing an episode of anything, I'm going to like it.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 November 2011 02:10 (nine years ago) link

yeah savage has direct episodes of so many great shows over the years

prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Thursday, 3 November 2011 02:11 (nine years ago) link

kinda loved how aimless and chill this episode was even if the brent musberger thing never evolved past wtf

'i guess you can call me a knitter with attitude'

brief pause

'what can i say penny my comedys always been edgy'

RR (Lamp), Thursday, 3 November 2011 05:39 (nine years ago) link

The Coupe/Wayans double act is probably my favourite thing about this show.

encarta it (Gukbe), Thursday, 3 November 2011 05:53 (nine years ago) link

coupe just fucking kills on this gd show man

RR (Lamp), Thursday, 3 November 2011 05:59 (nine years ago) link

Gukbe and Lamp are both OTM.

They are all hilarious, but Coupe and Wayans are all-stars.

some dude also OTM re: not to make a comparison it can't possibly live up to but at its best Happy Endings gives me the 30 Rock feeling of a writer's room just shamelessly and gleefully cramming in every gag they can think of

dense macabre (DJP), Thursday, 3 November 2011 15:57 (nine years ago) link

Dave with the steak truck is really the weakest link in the show, imo. He's the David Schwimmer.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 November 2011 16:16 (nine years ago) link

i don't know where else to put this but i had a really weird dream last night that i was chatting with damon wayans and explaining that i think my wife and kids was unfairly reviled and is due for a critical reevaluation.

Mordy, Sunday, 13 November 2011 15:07 (nine years ago) link

"hangout comedy" -- is this a genre specialized in by people who can't write plots?

Dr Morbois de Bologne (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 13 November 2011 15:29 (nine years ago) link

it's got about as much of what passes for plot in most other sitcoms, it's just more in the Seinfeld/Friends tradition of a bunch of friends hanging out in apartments and diners or whatever rather than being about a workplace or a household

some dude, Sunday, 13 November 2011 15:48 (nine years ago) link

Seinfeld often had intricate farcical plots that were classically structured, just with shorter scenes.

Dr Morbois de Bologne (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 13 November 2011 15:54 (nine years ago) link

that's what i meant by 'what passes for plot'

some dude, Sunday, 13 November 2011 15:59 (nine years ago) link

'hangout comedy' vs 'workplace comedy' or 'family comedy'

encarta it (Gukbe), Sunday, 13 November 2011 16:52 (nine years ago) link

also i told him that 'claire's boyfriend stories' were a total waste of the show but junior was a comic genius.

nb i haven't seen this show in years and i certainly don't think any of it was funny and i don't remember a single claire boyfriend story.

Mordy, Sunday, 13 November 2011 16:54 (nine years ago) link

gd this show

Lamp, Thursday, 17 November 2011 04:30 (nine years ago) link

i really love the direction they decided to go with elisha c's character btw - so many killer lines this episode but 'i thought it was the european spelling' was a++++

also i wanna find max's post abt early how i met your mother being like his actual friends cuz i sorta feel that way abt this show rn

Lamp, Thursday, 17 November 2011 04:41 (nine years ago) link

Jokes about Dave's perm were all hit, no miss.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 November 2011 06:54 (nine years ago) link

"John MacEnroe's Sister!"
"Temple Grandin!"

are the only ones I can remember, but yeah, all quality.

encarta it (Gukbe), Thursday, 17 November 2011 07:04 (nine years ago) link

i support all reasons to put elisha cuthbert on television

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 17 November 2011 07:05 (nine years ago) link

Wayans' "It's Pat!" + Patvoice is getting slept-on. Show is killing it.

all the other twinks with their fucked up dicks (billy), Thursday, 17 November 2011 16:03 (nine years ago) link

I haven't seen last night's yet but Eliza Coupe is pretty much my favorite person on television at the moment

Much Ado About Nuttin (DJP), Thursday, 17 November 2011 16:16 (nine years ago) link

She was the Abed-stalking federal agent in Community.

Let A Man Come In And Do The Cop Porn (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 17 November 2011 16:43 (nine years ago) link

otm, she is so much funnier than at the beginning of the season

when she scratched her forehead with a chicken foot I just about died

Bam! Orgasm explosion in your facehole. (DJP), Friday, 13 January 2012 17:37 (eight years ago) link

i've only seen some of these (weird hulu embargo/backlog), but the faces they make are so weird and unreal.

still, i laughed.

j., Friday, 13 January 2012 17:38 (eight years ago) link

the whole show is weird and unreal. that's why it took me so long to decide if i liked it; i had to get used to the artificiality and rhythms of the patter. but my verdict is it's awesome.

horseshoe, Friday, 13 January 2012 17:39 (eight years ago) link

Yeah the slang and facial expressions are so far removed from anything actual real live people do that it makes Friends seem like a documentary by comparison, but its still consistently funny. The racist parrot was hilarious.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 13 January 2012 17:41 (eight years ago) link

the somewhat scary thing is that, for all of the weirdness and unreality, I feel like this show captures the essence of my interactions with IRL friends more than any other show on television

Bam! Orgasm explosion in your facehole. (DJP), Friday, 13 January 2012 17:41 (eight years ago) link

Were Jane and Alex sisters at the beginning, or is it just a plot device they added later?

Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 January 2012 17:43 (eight years ago) link

the weirdness and unreality are all surface. the relationships are realistic.

horseshoe, Friday, 13 January 2012 17:44 (eight years ago) link

The "rotary dial" joke killed me dead for a good couple minutes.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 January 2012 17:44 (eight years ago) link

^^^ otm

I'm pretty sure they referenced them being sisters way early in Season 1.

Dave on the floor of his old room was pretty great, too

annoyed this isn't on Hulu

rayuela, Friday, 13 January 2012 18:01 (eight years ago) link

they're updating them though -- i remember a while back community wasn't available on devices either, but now it is

horseshoe, Friday, 13 January 2012 18:23 (eight years ago) link

haha ilx autofilter!!

watching the lastest episode did make me realize that this show is like the epitome of everything that whiney and other sitcom classicists hate abt the modern sitcom tho like how many jokes are people making ::groans:: puns and saying things in a oddball wayyyyy out of left field with add style patter

404 (Lamp), Friday, 13 January 2012 18:28 (eight years ago) link

lol @ "Room & Hoard"

Nhex, Wednesday, 6 May 2015 19:08 (five years ago) link

Umm, so I liked Marry Me more than most people (which is to say I liked it just fine, and most people I think just hated it), is it coming back or what? I think it was just put on "hiatus" by NBC but it hasn't been cancelled yet so it's been in limbo for months now.

Tay-Tay Brooklynpants (Murgatroid), Wednesday, 6 May 2015 21:47 (five years ago) link

5 minutes of the weird loners pilot was more than enough

adam, Wednesday, 6 May 2015 21:47 (five years ago) link

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 6 May 2015 22:09 (five years ago) link

Marry Me silently reappeared on the schedule a few weeks ago. I like it enough, but it's probably not coming back.

Nhex, Thursday, 7 May 2015 05:13 (five years ago) link

where do you live? they aired the last 4 produced episodes in the UK but they haven't aired at all in the US.

some dude, Thursday, 7 May 2015 10:39 (five years ago) link

in the US - i didn't see the eps on air but I think I saw them get added to my cable On Demand service
but in all honesty i could have imagined it

Nhex, Thursday, 7 May 2015 14:02 (five years ago) link

ok i checked, and i TOTALLY imagined it. damn. i must've been glancing at a tv schedule site or app

Nhex, Friday, 8 May 2015 06:18 (five years ago) link

well, both Marry Me and Weird Loners are officially cancelled
