my friend has so many hilarious and incredible stories from her Women Trying to Conceive support group like they are stunning

I don't think most people would consider Facebook to be a replacement for message boards - I have a feeling that WebSense may be as responsible for the decline in board traffic as anything else (assuming the decline is real).

it has made me want to make a tv show about a Women Trying to Conceive support group that solves missing or murdered children cases but I think in the long run it would make me feel bad

Every messageboard I've ever been a part of or looked at has had a core group of dedicated regulars who set the tone for the place, serve as moderators, take care of hosting/coding, and generate most of the valuable discussion. You can't really have a community if it's just a constant revolving influx of new blood imo. And most of the best ones seem to involve people who are obsessed with the board's topic and have been active members for years. I would think that most people posting on a "TTC" board are not going to stick around for a decade.

google+ is the new livejournal, going by the amount of blogging on it

google+ came over to my house and literally replaced my previous social networking sites, photos uploaded, the lot. It then washed the dishes before leaving.

My wife used to post on some of those boards made up primarily of late 20s women. They always seemed to erupt in drama when one poster criticized anothers' parenting skill too harshly, then camps formed around various posters and breakaway boards were created to keep the warring factions away from one another.

i got chased off metafilter by a bunch of 20something women for daring to suggest that the parents of transracially adopted parents aren't any more 'noble' than parents who bear their children themselves, and should that adopting a black/asian/russian kid didn't make you some kind of saint or martyr. p.s. i am transracially adopted and love my parents.

c'mon on the racially inflected bit? a lot of u.s. adoption law/custom is really fucked up by fundie adoption agencies who see adopting kids from foreign countries as a form of civilizing, missionary work. on the other side, a lot of countries have really low opinions of U.S. citizens coming to 'take' their babies, and treat adoptive parents like garbage. it's a really heated issue, and i wandered into it unarmed
