http://www.movieline.com/1992/08/oliver-stone-the-stone-age.php?page=all

Personally, I found JFK quite engaging, and was very impressed by the performances of Gary Oldman and Kevin Costner. But the film didn’t work for me, because at no point could I even come close to buying Stone’s theory about the assassination. Why did I have so much trouble swallowing the theory that the United States government was in on Kennedy’s assassination? Basically, because of Joe Pesci’s wig.

Joe Pesci is a preposterous-looking guy in the best of times, but that radiant shock of tangerine-hued fabric that was supposed to pass for Pesci’s hair looked like something the wardrobe department bought mail order from Vito’s Hair Research Center on Channel 67. To my way of thinking, if the creep played by Joe Pesci had anything to do with Kennedy’s assassination, the CIA and the mob and the Pentagon and the military-industrial complex and the KGB and Lyndon Baines Johnson and Fidel Castro would have chipped in to give him enough money to buy a better wig. They did not; he wore the ridiculous wig to his interrogation by Kevin Costner; and for me the whole conspiracy theory fell apart right there.

da croupier, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 20:56 (thirteen years ago) link

the sad thing is that the more you read about the cia the more you realize the great conspiracies of our time were carried our by guys with bad rugs and all the style of upholstery salesmen

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 21:14 (thirteen years ago) link

probably, and yet he made a joke about a bad wig in a movie all the same

da croupier, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 21:17 (thirteen years ago) link

probably worth letting you know those paragraphs are from a joe queenan essay for movieline riffing on Stone's oeuvre, and not a serious consideration of the JFK conspiracy

da croupier, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 21:19 (thirteen years ago) link

it's getting increasingly hard to remember that oliver stone used to be an omnipresence come awards time and was such a cultural force as a director. his steez really didn't translate well past the mid-'90s at all, probably worse than any other major director of his era. what's been his biggest film since 'nixon'. 'w' maybe? i saw 'wall street 2' and thought it was actually quite well done in a ludicrous way, and could have been something much better minus shia labeouf.

Οὖτις, Monday, 12 January 2015 19:15 (nine years ago) link

I watched Wall Street 2 with its intended dinner theatre audience and there a sense that everyone wanted Quality Adult Entertainment and gave the film a lot of chances.

Stone's eminence started to wane with NBK, which was a modest hit and one of those things everyone was talking about until Pulp Fiction. Nixon was the critical comeback, I guess, just to prove he could do JFK again without any of the verve. I saw Any Given Sunday in the theatre but except for some bonecrunching it reminded me of Coppola directing Jack.
