Wow, this show is relentlessly duddish this season. It's not awful, but it blows my mind how overrated this show is. There's just no new ideas, they just keep beating that dead horse. Eiiii.

yeah, its VERY overrated. OTM. i still watch it tho.

Blossom was in Fat Actress which like like CYE-lite.

On a Conan O'Brien skit about commemorative stamps of the future, Conan introduced the Mayim Bialik stamp of 2050. Andy immediately chimed in, "Conan, you of course mean 'President Bialik'". I laughed at this for about an hour.

yes it was blossom

It especially depressing that HBO runs Extras immediately after Curb Your Enthusiasm, which is even less funny, and is recycling a lot of the same sort of jokes with less energy and imagination. I think Gervais/Merchant and Larry David are talented, funny guys, but they've really hit a wall. It's time for a new direction, fellas. It's really disheartening to see the recent episodes of the NBC Office beat Gervais at his own game.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 02:42 (eighteen years ago) link

I had no idea the NBC Office was still on the air!

i loved the first four cye seasons, but i've barely cracked a smile during the last two eps. shame.

woah a poor episode

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 19:45 (eighteen years ago) link

it's wasn't great, but the line "This is a project that requires a return to home base" was classic

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 22:11 (eighteen years ago) link

There were two bits in that last episode that he had already done in Seinfeld - Larry telling the groom that a lesbian will always beat a man in pleasing a woman because "they're familiar with the equipment" was from a Seinfeld where Elaine wanted to get a gay man to "switch teams." And the not being able to poo happened to Kramer on the episode where Jerry is dated the Romanian circus gymnast (somewhat different setup but it felt similar). Both of the ones this season just seem a little flat/predictable compared to previous seasons.

it almost felt like a parody of CYE

some uncharacteristically illiberal comments from larry in the latest ep.

agree that CYE has been off its game this season; totally disagree with the slight on Extras upthread.

PeopleFunnyBoy (PeopleFunnyBoy), Monday, 17 October 2005 22:19 (eighteen years ago) link

the thing i used to love about this show was that LD used to commit faux pas (what's the plural of faux pas?) by breaking unspoken (and usually ridiculous) social codes through no real fault of his own -- something I felt I could relate to. The more he started actively creating his dilemmas through blatant insensitivity, the less I could relate.

PeopleFunnyBoy (PeopleFunnyBoy), Monday, 17 October 2005 22:41 (eighteen years ago) link

Has episode 5 been shown yet? I'm having trouble finding a torrent for it.

I do like the new series but I'm also rewatching the early series and David has definitely lost something. The ending of episode 4, with the old Japanese man hurtling towards him, was far too slapstick cheese.

Affectian (Affectian), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 15:59 (eighteen years ago) link

Episode 5.4 was strange, probably the most out-there episode they've ever done. The show thrives on finding humour in ultimately inconsequential misunderstandings, but insulting a person and driving them to attempt suicide is a little more than a simple misunderstanding.

I can tolerate one episode based on the happenings at his dad's retirement home. I do NOT want to see those people become recurring characters.

this is OTM, unfortunately. there's a world of difference between misunderstandings based on a typo (beloved cunt) or accidentally tripping up Shaq and the current humour based on active rudeness. it's much less funny now (i'm talking about season 4 here).

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 17:31 (eighteen years ago) link

i've just started watching this on more4 (UK digital thing) ... as i said on, er, the more4 thread, i was kinda surprised that this supposedly awesome piece of observational/improvised genius passed me by without raising more than a couple of chuckles. but it's series 4 (i think) they're showing, which - reading this - explains a lot.

i need to get hold of some of the earlier stuff: i mean, i really like the two episodes i've seen, but i couldn't understand why people were going mental about it. the idea, however, of the situations being less about LD being a bit of an arrogant, blasé chump (which is the impression i have of the character based on what i've seen) and more about him getting into situations through no real fault of his own appeals greatly.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 17:38 (eighteen years ago) link

Grimly, yeah you really need to get hold of the 1st and 2nd series, they're fantastic. I disliked the idea behind series 4 (much too plot-heavy) and series 5 is, as said above, too slapstick, too cornball. If you like, I can post you a dvd with the first two series (and pilot) on it? (about to mail you now too)

So, does anyone know if episode 5.5 was screened on Sunday?

Affectian (Affectian), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 21:14 (eighteen years ago) link

season 4 is stone cold great and you are all crazy fuckers

c7n (Cozen), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 21:17 (eighteen years ago) link

bring back spender chow damn right

c7n (Cozen), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 21:17 (eighteen years ago) link

Cozen, have you found a torrent of ep 5.5?

Affectian (Affectian), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 21:22 (eighteen years ago) link

sexydancer off the money by a long way I think... thought it's a convenient if-inaccurate precis of what CYE could be like if you only perceived it rather than watched it

and anyway the show is all about larry's hands

x-post

not even looked A... still not managed to get my 5.4 torrent to download... need to pick up the latest prison break ep. and 5.4 & 5.5... I've been having problems with CYE torrents

c7n (Cozen), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 21:25 (eighteen years ago) link

They didn't air a new episode this week. #5 airs this coming Sunday.

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 21:34 (eighteen years ago) link

Ah thanks Stan. Cozen, if you (or anyone else) use Soulseek then message Niche Ian on there and I'll share this series of CYE as I get them.

Affectian (Affectian), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 21:52 (eighteen years ago) link

has to be said, i've given it the benefit for a couple-three eps now, but THIS SERIES ON MORE4 SUCKS. it is like someone has been given the "Curb recipe" and got everything just a bit wrong with a sucky end result.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 7 November 2005 11:50 (eighteen years ago) link

Episode 5 from series 5 was up there with the best from series 1 & 2. The series on More4 is series 4 isn't it? And yeah, that one stank.

I've been rewatching the series lately and the end of The Doll (series 2) is unbeatable. Roughest grimmest harshest piece of funny I've ever seen.

afffectian, Tuesday, 8 November 2005 09:33 (eighteen years ago) link

that ep. not that funny

you're all being far too harsh on season 4

soul provider (Cozen), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 10:33 (eighteen years ago) link

The Doll and the eps around that one (if it's the one i think it is, which seems likely) were indeed great.
