you mean 34th ave? i feel like they are slowly making it more and more inconvenient for cars but ultimately i think automated turrets are the answer

Yes

Inconvenience for cars maybe but the motorcycles have filled the void.

The Thin, Wild Mercury Rising (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 15 September 2023 19:33 (seven months ago) link

And they thread through everybody while expecting the bikes and pedestrians to stay in their lane.

passed by this barber shop the other day. i recognize that there is no ill intent here, but still kind of jarring to see.

There was a Kikes something or other on 43rd Ave in sunnyside too. It’s a Hispanic name.

i am sitting in Haidilao in Flushing and they are playing a ridiculous Chinese pop version of 'Oh Suzannah' with the amazing/ridiculous Daphne & Celeste general MIDI banjo sound

This is the first time i have eaten out in about 4 months

Love Flushing. Have you checked out the new mall, Tangram?

calstars, Friday, 12 January 2024 01:18 (four months ago) link

I have not! Yeah, Flushing is inarguably the most fun, lots-to-do place to visit in NYC.

Deflatormouse, Friday, 12 January 2024 01:34 (four months ago) link

Riding the 7 train back to reality :(

Deflatormouse, Friday, 12 January 2024 01:36 (four months ago) link

We practically live in Tangram. Food court is great they even have a zaab zaab outpost. We went to the fancy Peking duck place too huge wait but an amazing meal and experience. Everything was delicious except for the famous dish that is mashed potatoes shaped like a rabbit general in a cold creamy chicken sauce. Just wasn’t to our taste perhaps. I’d share a link if I wasn’t so lazy. Google it.

dan selzer, Friday, 12 January 2024 03:14 (four months ago) link

Well I def recommend Haidilao as an excellent hot pot place with veggie/vegan options. Seems like it would be a great place to bring kids if you have kids, it’s very fun. They have a board games lounge and a claw machine in the waiting area, noodles that dance and I was offered a free ice cream at the end. Also the bar where you get to mix your own sauces. Everything I tried was incredible. The tomato hot pot was my favorite.

I'm not a huge hot fan or expert, but the one place we've been to is ChongQing Lao Zao which is A+ on atmosphere at least. Crazy charming interior.

dan selzer, Friday, 12 January 2024 13:59 (four months ago) link

But back to Juqi in Tangram, other than that rabbit, everything was totally delicious with really fun and silly presentations. We did the half peking duck which was plenty, a really spicy schezuan fish soup, cumin lamb, diced chicken, litchi shrimp balls. Basically the most basic stuff we could find but it was all great.

dan selzer, Friday, 12 January 2024 14:03 (four months ago) link

did you do the charcoal briquette rice?

, Friday, 12 January 2024 14:23 (four months ago) link

tangram is about to become (if not already) weeb central of nyc. with the miniso, anime shop on the 2nd floor, the planned gatcha gatcha shop, kura kura on the first floor.

we caught boy and the heron at the regal, the screens were surprisingly big. limited seating but big screens - would rather it be that then small screen and lots of seats.

the bar in tangram is sort of hideously overpriced, i didn't think it'd stay in business for as long as it has.

, Friday, 12 January 2024 14:25 (four months ago) link

didn't have that rice.

dan selzer, Friday, 12 January 2024 14:29 (four months ago) link

my daughter who is nearly 7 is really into "weeb" though this is the first time I've heard that term. Technically she just likes cute stuff and all those places def scratch that itch for her. She likes non japanese cute stuff too, though I suppose the more it seems japanese the happier she is. Apparently Pusheen was created by americans in chicago? Oh well.

For her upcoming birthday we're going to flushing and letting her go to town on gatchas and claw machines and whatnot at various spots in flushing.

Though there's a little japanese store on 6th ave below 14th st that has a bunch of claw machines. And another near 23rd. st. Def taking over.

dan selzer, Friday, 12 January 2024 14:32 (four months ago) link

you'll want to bring her to the teso-x in flushing

, Friday, 12 January 2024 14:33 (four months ago) link

Will keep it in mind.

dan selzer, Friday, 12 January 2024 14:43 (four months ago) link

also dan in case not obvious, 'weeb' is a derogatory term so i wouldn't go teaching that to your daughter.

, Friday, 12 January 2024 14:44 (four months ago) link

Also good advice.

dan selzer, Friday, 12 January 2024 15:30 (four months ago) link

really fun and silly presentations.

WANT but nothing you mentioned is remotely vegan.

googled Tangram and SO MUCH NEON i am def going sometime this winter it would be worth the detour just for the neon

Oh it’s Tu er ye LOL
I thought the “general” part was a funny auto-complete or something that you didn’t catch

^sweet!

so, i recently conducted an experiment for the benefit of my community, which is to say i ate *two* rather large meals one after the other which was terribly difficult for me, you must understand.

I noticed that the famed Hindu Temple Canteen in Murry Hill has the same menu and prices as the Dosa Hut around the corner. being an altruist and a scientist, i ordered a 3 course meal at the Hindu Temple Canteen in and then ordered the very same meal at the Dosa Hut immediately after I'd finished.

My findings are that the food at Dosa Hut is 10x more delicious and the portions are 3x larger (which made this research especially painful to conduct), but basically there is no reason to eat at the temple ever unless you really want to sit in a basement. Also the guy who runs the Dosa Hut is the sweetest man on earth.

What else?? I've been to Tangram! it was pretty dead on a weekday evening, apart from the foodcourt (the neon looks way better in photos), so kinda depressing. Ju Qi does have some vegan options and an incredible looking rainbow cocktail but it is $$$

The Tangram visit left me feeling that China is the future and America is the past, and that the future is very exciting but hasn't quite arrived yet.

Deflatormouse, Saturday, 10 February 2024 02:57 (three months ago) link

Agree about the neon and yeah the place left me with kind of an empty feeling for some reason

calstars, Saturday, 10 February 2024 03:18 (three months ago) link

no no i'm def glad i went, thanks for the tip!
it felt... like a place that's inevitably gonna blow up, def gonna be a moment, just not as soon as the developers thought.

We are off our Queens food game since the pandemic, but jonesing for some (preferably spicy, but open to anything) food (either Chinese or Thai) in Queens, either Woodside or Flushing. Favorites from the past were Little Pepper, Uncle Zhou (RIP, the best), Fu Run, Yu Garden, Hunan Kitchen of Grand Sichuan, Ayada, Szechuan Mountain House, the Peking Duck bun place with the window on the street. Would love any current recommendations for where to go these days.
