"Jersey Shore is set in the summer and it is always summer in the North East. No one wears a coat and Geordie girls are always out in their mini-skirts," says Kerry Taylor, the director of television for MTV Networks UK and Ireland.

See, there's been this thing about how the Geordie accent is the most popular/likeable accent in the UK.

This turnaround originated by "Auf Wiedersehen Pet" culminates in so many advert/voiceovers for commercials and some reality TV docus.

Of late, the Welsh accent has soared in popularity after Gavin&Stacey.

Still, I wonder...

One is the sun-kissed shore of an affluent state on the US east coast

Everything I thought I knew about Jersey appears to be wrong, then.

Except the east coast bit.

They could have done it in Jersey, I guess...

Ha, I just made my first ever actual original posting on Facebook re this. Hmm...

I would watch Geordie shore in a heartbeat. Newcastle nightlife totally terrifying but intriguing. This needs to happen and I need to find a way to watch it in the US.

I sort of <3 NJ btw and while some of the things NV prob thinks are likely totally OTM, it has some gorgeous parts as well.

ENBB, Friday, 4 February 2011 14:40 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm not down on NJ but "sun-kissed" and "affluent" don't seem madly accurate?

Y Kant Torres Red (Noodle Vague), Friday, 4 February 2011 14:41 (thirteen years ago) link

I was in Newcastle on Wednesday night and there were many coats being worn, even by young people.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

new jersey is definitely affluent! #2 among states in median household income. most of it doesn't look like camden. probably only sun-kissed relative to newcastle though.

Anyone see the first episode? In case you missed some of the shocking antics - the Mail has helpfully included some photos.

Locals are believed to be furious after the show's debut airing on Tuesday night which saw cast members stripping off, vomiting and getting drunk

Which never happens in Newcastle normally.

But not in the US it appears

See, since this thread started we've had "Made in Chelsea" and that Essex one, and I'm in two minds as to is this what we really want, is it?

Mark G, Thursday, 26 May 2011 14:12 (twelve years ago) link

and that Essex one

You mean TOWIE? I kept seeing this (in the gutter press and similar low publications) and not knowing wtf a TOWIE was

Anyway, regarding Cheryl, this is 'one US website claims' and it's become a huge news story because they've been getting endless mileage from "OMG Who can judge! I mean, who?" stories for nine months to no appreciable tiredness from people reading it and that.

So, maybe it is, and maybe it isn't. Still...

(xpost yeah, it's called Towie now, as opposed to "the only way is essex" but.)

This one got 300,000 viewers on MTV apparently. That Essex one got the viewers award at the BAFTAS. Fuck knows who's watching the Chelsea one, it's excruciating viewing. People like that kind of thing though it seems.

i can't, i won't (Ned Trifle II), Thursday, 26 May 2011 20:13 (twelve years ago) link

Well, I've watched none of these.

I saw an excerpt of the Essex one, and it looked like rubbish improvisation.

Mark G, Thursday, 26 May 2011 20:14 (twelve years ago) link

lol (as usual) at the DM comments.

Its not just the Geordi's but this is typical of what goes on all over the country. Decent values have gone in favor of attention seeking, celebrityism (is that a word?) I am embarassed to be associated with the UK these day as we have become the laughing stock of Europe.

If you think that was bad improv you should see the Chelsea one. You'll be begging to get back to Essex.

Got treated to a viewing of the final episode.

They've done the right thing in overcoming the lack of Italian-American stereotypical hilarity with massive fake cans.
