I like the Cyclopes best (even though they aren't Gods), they were pals with Zeus. But, Apollo (boo, hiss) killed them. (see Oh no! Cyclops! Oh no!)

All the Greek Gods on statues have really small ones though!

Tom, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well, maybe that's what anthony meant!

Hermes seemed to enjoy life pretty well.

"All the Greek Gods on statues have really small ones though!"

That's to stop the statues becoming unbalanced and falling over. *Really*...

Matt DC, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah but I bet Apollo or whoever wasn't too pleased - some act of worship that is!

Tom, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

the Hekatonchires!

Well, presumably you've heard of "growers" versus "showers."

All the statues with the big knobs had the porcelain peckers plucked off by pissed people on the way home from the pub.

Pete, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah and when Apollo gets pissed off he usually ends up killing someone!

"thou foul swine has dishonoured your God with your slur upon his manhood"

Oh dear. Have you already been drinking?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

yes Ned, I had a lovely cup of tea. But, seriously have I hit rock bottom?

jel --, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I just saw the Elgin Marbles this morning. NONE of them had knobs entact, so I couldn't tell you.

Do we have to pick a god, or will any character from Greek Mythology do? I think I'd pick Medea. But if it had to be an Olypian, it would have to be Dionysius, duh.

kate, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I was actually talking to Pete, but you'll do as well.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I used to edit some really good comics centring around Bacchus, so I'll choose him. Editing in this case pretty much consisted of telling cartoonist Eddie Campbell that whatever he wanted to do was fine. Actually, he did want story advice occasionally, but my contribution was infinitessimal.

Appollo Creed.

Anyone who is seriously interested in Greek mythology - and a lot of other people - should read The Marriage Of Cadmus And Harmony by Roberto Calasso, an Italian intellectual who is the best writer about myth I have ever read. This is because he is the only writer about myth I have read who treats mythology as a mentality rather than an object of distant study, and who appreciates that myth- systems are not consistent and do not have to be, and who takes as a starting point that people living 2500 years ago are (or might be) as intelligent and incredulous as us. Anthony, honestly, if you've never read it, go and buy it tomorrow. When you've finished it go and get Ka, his equally enchanting depiction of Hindu mythology.

The Marriage Of Cadmus And Harmony is Ace. I need to read Ka.

anthony, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't want stories where ancient Greeks are as sceptical as we are, in that I really like the treatment of messages from Gods as matter of fact, almost quotidian events. And I should have mentioned that I am a John Barth fan so would recommend Chimera and bits of Lost In The Funhouse for PoMo approaches to a few Greek mythologies.

Zeus, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I always kind of fancied Pan, but he is not among the 'canonical' Olympian Twelve. If restricted to the Deity Dozen, I'd settle on Hermes, the god of thieves, for his varied daily life, but Zeus would be a good second, on account of his prolific sex life.

I'm doing an report on an greek god, Medea. I know she fell deeply in love with Jason and the gold fleece and helped him slay the dragon. And Jason soon got tired of Medea and tried to marry other princess, but Medea killed her too, and killed Jasons& hers 2 children out of anger of rage. What else should I know about Medea?
