....... and no cheap jokes about Penicillin, please!

I need to buy a birthday gift for a 30-something-year-old male who likes gadgets. He enjoys motorsports and powerboating. He rides a Honda Fireblade, and has a private pilot's licence (though doesn't fly much at the moment).

Budget around UK£300. Urgent help, please. I need to sort something out this weekend.

Anyone got any decent ideas for Boys Toys? What would you choose if the gift were for you?

Please post wish lists/ideas here IMMEDIATELY!!!! (if not sooner)

Thanks in advance for some inspiration - I'm feeling brain-dead today.

of course that should have said "what" and not "wjat"

(first day with new fingers, sorry)

You could try iwantoneofthose.com, a very gadgety type place which comes highly recommended...

Does he have an MP3 player?

hire a hitman to kill him

ps I'm sure he's lovely :)

Bob Zemko, Wednesday, 31 July 2002 00:00 (nineteen years ago) link

ROFLMAO!! Unfortunately I think hitmen cost a bit more than £300 don't they? There have been times I've been tempted, believe me!

Yes, Dan, he's got an MP3 player - that's what I got him last Christmas.

I'm usually so good at thinking up great gifts for people, but I've been so snowed under with work lately that my inspiration has sort of gone out the window.

Thanks Starry for the suggestion about the iwantoneofthose site ...... it's great! I went to Reading last weekend to see if there was anything worth getting from The Gadget Shop or the Discovery Store, but they were both rubbish and I came home empty handed.

So far all I've managed to do is burn a CD with his favourite tracks on, which is nice but not much of a present really. *sigh*

Does he have an X-Box?

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 31 July 2002 00:00 (nineteen years ago) link

He's got a PS2, Dan. Would an X-Box be better?

Can I be your friend please, CJ? You are clearly much richer than my friends, or madly generous. Both, actually, unless you are very rich.

Martin Skidmore, Wednesday, 31 July 2002 00:00 (nineteen years ago) link

He might want to have more than one gaming platform, especially if he has more than one TV.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 31 July 2002 00:00 (nineteen years ago) link

I am both mad and generous Martin, though sadly not rich (due chiefly to being mad and generous)

Do you have an X-Box, Dan? Is it worth having one of those if you already have a PS2? I'm not very clued up on these things I'm afraid, and I would have thought they were all much-of-a-muchness.

C J, Wednesday, 31 July 2002 00:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Get him a great big stack of PS2 games.

Graham, Wednesday, 31 July 2002 00:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Cutco!

I don't have an X-Box, but I desperately want one because of Jet Set Radio: Future. Of course, I'm a wannabe videogame addict (ie, if I had more money, I'd be spending it all on videogames).

The big stack of PS2 games is another good idea. You could also get him some cool PS2 accessories.

I'm a gadgety sort of bloke too, so let me share a secret about gear- freaks: we typically do not like gadgetry as presents. Give him something that lasts a moment in time, but a lifetime in memories.... And then buy him a cheap but well-thought present.

debaser (not d.baser), Thursday, 1 August 2002 00:00 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah, go with debaser. personally if I want some gadgetry etc then I'd buy it myself... or at the very least want/NEED to choose the item before someone else buys it for me. which isn't very fun. so throw away the budget and buy him some charming 2nd hand junk that says YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT HIM rather than the latest guy-toy. I know it's more work but y'know.

note that this is my preference... it could be that he'd go "hey what's this cheap rub?!" (in a bad way). In which case go with my first answer cos he's a prick. good luX0r!

Bob Zemko, Thursday, 1 August 2002 00:00 (nineteen years ago) link

If he has a PS2, it's hard to go wrong with PS2 games. Otherwise a console like Gamecube or X-Box and a game or two, would be cool for most, especially since you already know he likes video games.

Thanks to everyone for their brilliant suggestions.

So far, I've decided on :

(1) Booking some time at an indoor Karting place (those motorised go- karts) for him and five of his mates, then paying for a pub lunch for them all and taxis home afterwards.

(2) I've had someone take a photo of me on his Fireblade, scanned it into my computer and printed out copies of it on that special paper which turns it into an iron-on transfer. I thought I'd customise a plain duvet cover with it or something.

(3) Same photo currently being glazed onto a coffee mug by a shop in town where they do such things

(4) He told me once about a bit of a prank he got involved in at school, involving the school roof and a teacher's bicycle - he said it made the local papers at the time. After many hours of research in a newspaper archives library, I found the article and photograph - so I've had that printed out and framed it, as a bit of a larf.

(5) I've ordered a couple of little gadgety things from the iwantoneofthose site - the instant mobile phone charger, tiny torch with krypton beam etc, that sort of thing.

Going shopping tomorrow, so hopefully will stumble across some other bits and pieces then.

Thanks again for all the input - I really appreciate it!
