last week i found out a well-known festival took stuff from articles i had written and put it in their catalog, attributed to me, but not as a quote, as if i'd actually written it for them. they apologized but why is this ok??

copy/paste internet ethics

The warring fake Twitter feeds rule:

http://twitter.com/cookssource
http://twitter.com/cooksource
http://twitter.com/cookssource_mag

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 4 November 2010 19:14 (thirteen years ago) link

But honestly Monica, the web is considered "public domain" and you should be happy we just didn't "lift" your whole article and put someone else's name on it!

This is the attitude of a lot of people out there now, it seems.

the speed with which these guys were publicly exposed + shamed is also due to the internet so live by the mouse die by the mouse

The (actual) Facebook page = bloodsport:

is this editor a britishes? she wrote "offence" -- and there's no apostrophe in cooks source.

the moray eels eat the (get bent), Thursday, 4 November 2010 19:25 (thirteen years ago) link

the whole "yeah we took your article but it sucked so you should be grateful" attitude is like a guy calling a girl an ugly slut after he slept with her.

Here we go:

A fan even found a pumpkin pie article written by Paula Deen and pasted up a photo of the magazine with the article in question circled in red. Deen replied on Facebook with: “Thank you, this has been forwarded to our legal department.”

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 4 November 2010 19:29 (thirteen years ago) link

first time i've ever been proud of ms. deen.

Then there's the other publication:

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Travel-Source-Magazine/153496748013686

Travel Source is a monthly publication dedicated to marketing small businesses in Western New England. It is produced by Cooks Source Publications and is copy-right protected, and may not be reproduced without permission of the publisher.

The Facebook page is and remains a pretty awesome/horrifying trainwreck. The fake apology made it better.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 5 November 2010 15:29 (thirteen years ago) link

I liked this comment on the Facebook page: "Someone sent me a link to the PirateBay and this was the homepage."

Then there's the allegedly 'real' new FB page:

But I have my doubts.

Well everyone on LiveJournal steal from other sources so there. The place is swimming with fan-produced wank and ONTD.

That's not a "laugh track", it's an audience and you're in it. (MintIce), Friday, 5 November 2010 15:57 (thirteen years ago) link

DJP you should go and investigate the bakery that pulled its ads. The food seemed tasty.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 5 November 2010 15:59 (thirteen years ago) link

They had a great recipe for schadenfreude a couple of issues ago -- turns out it was lifted from the Hobo Times.

Unfrozen Caveman Board-Lawyer (WmC), Friday, 5 November 2010 16:25 (thirteen years ago) link

I am not driving 2 hours to go to a bakery!

the difference is that no advertiser is paying any livejournallers for those fan-produced wank

(The likelihood of this page being anything other than trollbait to start with = nil, but as one of the commenters said, "Fake or not fake, it's not unbelievable. I've had pretty much the same conversation before, and was given admin access to websites just on my say-so, and I was using a foreign e-mail address on top of it all.
So, good job.")

This bit's pretty cool:

http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=196994196748&topic=23314

Somebody who lives in the area where a slew of the local advertisers are at is making the rounds about it all. Unsurprisingly, to quote her, "from the information I've recieved from the businesses I have been able to talk to, Cooks Source has been pushy and dishonest about advertising, and apparently drops magazines off at stores without against their will and knowledge, and then lists them as "distributors."" But of course.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 6 November 2010 16:16 (thirteen years ago) link

The good news: Cooks Source now has a new editor.

The bad news: it's Jimmy Page.

what's interesting to me about this is that i totally saved the company i work for from a similar disaster only last month. the founder/designer of the clothes used an image on some apparel that always struck me as familiar, but i assumed she had gotten the rights to it.

then, i wrote her and was like, "i assume you have the rights to the image by [artist's name]?"

and she wrote back and was like, "that's who did it? holy shit holy shit stop production while i contact him and his legal people."

i mean, the dude is fuckin famous. whitney biennial famous. i smacked my face a few dozen times before just becoming somewhat smug about my saving the company from an almost certain lawsuit.

Weird - even if she didn't know who did it, what was she thinking? That it was out of copyright or something?

yeah, right? i was like, 'sure, boss, there are tons of non-copyrighted images of naked girls holding wolves just floating around.'

In addition, a donation to the Western New England Food Bank, is being made in her name.

Would prefer they send it to the Western New England Punctuation Re-Education Camp, imo.

This actually might be the funniest line of them all, really:

Bleary-eyed I didnt notice it was copy written and reordered some of it.

Always delighted to see an "editor" who doesn't know the difference between "copyright" and "copy write."
