Took them up on their recommendation to watch MODERN ROMANCE on Valentine's Day and didn't regret it.

Rewatched Ali: Fear Eats the Soul on Mubi last night and that was a perfect VD choice.

mubiusa Today is your last chance to see IRREVERSIBLE - STRAIGHT CUT (Gaspar Noé, 2023) in theaters, free with MUBI GO at the link in our bio.

Sorry, mubiusa and MUBI GO, think I will pass on this, although the video of Monica B dancing in the shiny gold dress is nice.

yeah zero desire to ever watch that movie again

it's fucking wretched. Whatever's Noe's parents spent on the private Catholic school he went to didn't help whatsoever in his development.

calzino, Sunday, 19 February 2023 23:46 (one year ago) link

i'm okay skipping it based on what i know of it and the last three posts help reinforce that impulse.
I would like to see Pacifiction but it's a busy week and THREE HOURS dude c'mon

I keep watching this trio of Patrick Keiller docs: Robinson in Ruins/in Space and London (Ruins narrated by Vanessa Redgrave). I still have little idea who Robinson was, but I like him a lot.

calzino, Monday, 19 June 2023 19:13 (ten months ago) link

he was imprisoned for some reason I didn't pick up on in the docs and he believed he could look into the future by looking hard at the "molecular basis of historical events" in the locations they occurred or something like that. He was obv a fantastic bloke!

calzino, Monday, 19 June 2023 19:29 (ten months ago) link

Those films are so great. Not sure I've ever actually seen Robinson in Space, having said that. The novel by Chris Petit is really good too.

I've made that sound like they're intentionally related when the relationship is more, uh, tangential but the echoes are there.

Once Upon a Time in Anatolia is wonderful. Nuri Bilge Ceylan is one of today’s top 10 directors

Azor was my favorite 2021 movie. Even thinking about it now is giving me a bit of the creeps.

New collection here looks choice:

Beloved by Latin American audiences—and renowned auteurs such as Alfonso Cuarón and Guillermo del Toro—the Golden Age of Mexican cinema is filled with treasures beyond a cinephile’s wildest dreams. Ushering in a monumentally prolific era of master filmmakers and unforgettable screen stars, these exquisite tales ingeniously reimagine the visual aesthetics of classical Hollywood through the distinctive lens of local culture and history. Pressing issues such as wealth inequality and gender roles are among their primary concerns, yet many of the most notable films from this period also have a penchant for the surreal, the fantastical, and the pleasurably strange. Immortalized on screen are not only political revolutionaries but also luchadores, witches, superheroes, and more.

Here, fiery passions can lead to more than a clandestine love affair; they can result in murder or villainous plans for world domination! With melodrama as the key mode of expression, the mirror of everyday realism is shattered, revealing the volatile depths of human desire. Curated in partnership with the Locarno Festival, this selection delivers a taste of their exceptional retrospective of Mexican film production, which includes never-before-seen works. Erasing the simplistic binary between so-called highbrow and lowbrow entertainment, these rediscovered gems, which span three decades, showcase the potency of popular cinema as a vessel for both social commentary and genre delights.

Five up now and hopefully more to follow.

The Original Human Breadbox (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 10 August 2023 23:30 (nine months ago) link

it's sort of like The Third Man in its plot structure, but no snappy dialogue or safe characters and more like a mundane nightmare where you you sense there is a murky undercurrent of bad shit happening way scarier than the obvious ordinary everyday evil you see glimpses of and try to normalise.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Thursday, 10 August 2023 23:30 (nine months ago) link

OTM. It's more than tyres and petrol, Old Man.

The Original Human Breadbox (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 10 August 2023 23:58 (nine months ago) link

Indeed to all the above -- a remarkable and unsettling film.

Watched four of those five (so far) Mexican showcase films I posted about earlier -- all great in their own ways!

Is it just me or is MUBI not updating with a new movie everyday anymore?

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Monday, 18 September 2023 19:21 (seven months ago) link

yes, they sent a circular to me via email a couple weeks ago suggesting there wouldn't be a daily movie anymore. not sure if that's impacted the number of overall films added, I've not really been super active on it recently
