thing about Tiger is, and same applies to Cron or Kobe or take your pick of a sport, the beauty of his ability crosses out any kind of bullshit idiot moral argument about deserving to win. the whole fucking point of sport is skill = ethics

blah blah shit is complicated but if you hate Tiger go fucking shoot yourself in the face is how i break it down to some extent

The Gapes of Wrath (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 14 April 2019 20:43 (four months ago) link

xyzzzz__: Would your dislike be tied into what tangenttangent was saying, the insanely disproportionate attention paid to Tiger for a decade, like no other golfer (with the possible exception of Mickelson, and occasional flashes like Garcia) existed? It was indeed wearing, but from a business standpoint--what he did for television in terms of ratings and sponsorship--I can understand that. I don't know how the early start time will figure in, but I bet the ratings for today will be off-the-chart.

clemenza, Sunday, 14 April 2019 20:50 (four months ago) link

Gonna shoot half of my face down.

To NV and xp clemenza: I don't see a lot of beauty there. A lot of the time he is hacking away at a golf course. Might have helped if he had a near equal (like Federer had Nadal). Today was unlike any of his wins in that there was a duel there, so I saw something else.

The media focus was bad but you can comprehend that as he was so dominant.

I'll take my pick of Stephen Hendry then. All of this time I should have been cheering him on.

Do you like 70s hard rock with a guitar hero? (Tom D.), Sunday, 14 April 2019 21:04 (four months ago) link

surely the Federer of golf is yrself/the media/the outside???

i know it's more complicated than this and i'm too battered to work it thru right now but i sincerely thought he was done as recently as two years ago and didn't deserve to be done and uggh, narratives, and i wanted Molinari to do it, but that was a sweet resurrection

The Gapes of Wrath (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 14 April 2019 21:07 (four months ago) link

i feel the same about Hendry as well Tom! it's easy to do the "genius is boring" story but fuck it, sometimes being the best is a fact of life

Ok that's too far, nv

Might have helped if he had a near equal

Skill-wise, I think he probably did. But the most fascinating thing to me during that decade was how deeply he had gotten into the heads of everyone else, Mickelsen especially. Today felt a little like that: with the exception of Johnson, everyone else seemed to fall apart as soon as they looked to be in it. That's to Tiger's credit, I think.

clemenza, Sunday, 14 April 2019 21:16 (four months ago) link

(And I realize that happens in majors in general--but it was even more pronounced when Tiger was #1.)

clemenza, Sunday, 14 April 2019 21:18 (four months ago) link

btw Faldo was infinitely more cuntish than any sports peep i csn think of

The Gapes of Wrath (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 14 April 2019 21:20 (four months ago) link

Not sure I think Molinari was digging himself out throughout the round until he finally couldn't on the 12th -- and he played the shot before Tiger. it's true Tiger got into ppl's heads but so did Fed, but Nadal met that challenge.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 14 April 2019 21:22 (four months ago) link

Things like this--released minutes after-the-fact--don't help, I'll agree.

clemenza, Sunday, 14 April 2019 21:25 (four months ago) link

it's unfortunate that Woods is the only top flight golfer ruthlessly manipulated by corporate sponsors, yeah

The Gapes of Wrath (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 14 April 2019 21:27 (four months ago) link

I started watching golf when Faldo beat Norman at the masters but that was sorta it for him, then the Tiger era started.

The comparison with the Hendry years is spot on really but that only lasted about five years before Ronnie broke through and Ken Doherty beat Hendry at the world's in '97. And then you had Higgins and Williams too so Hendry had competition and there were some classic finals!

Tiger just felt longer and he was on his own it seemed. Genius but what's in it for me man?!

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 14 April 2019 21:29 (four months ago) link

I'll give Nike credit for sticking with him at a time when scandal gets you shown the door immediately, even if I know it probably had little to do with loyalty and was just a financial risk/reward calculation that seems to have worked out.

clemenza, Sunday, 14 April 2019 21:31 (four months ago) link

I honestly felt a bit emotional watching him win. So he isn't a good person or a role model. Are we all really so perfect or charismatic or well-rounded?

He has had a strange life and the pressure cooker of celebrity in America doesn't exactly treat people so well, not least after a public meltdown like Tiger's.

This piece is very long but really gives context to today - his dad died, he lost his shit badly, he was injured and his body was in ruins, he fucked up his own life and made lots of stupid decisions. Somehow, and I'd say even just the physical side of it alone is remarkable, he has managed to claw his way back.

The ambiguity of his character makes it all the more interesting.

i've definitely enjoyed the post-Tiger gold world in the same way that i enjoyed the post-Hendry snooker world (and Ronnie, who is above and beyond either, has his own story exactly because he's better than machine precision) but given all the weirdness of race/class/cheering for alt option/you know what i mean, fairy stories

all that, anyway, the Tiger resurrection is a great story also all things considered i think he's the best player of his game of all time and this is a welcome next chapter

The Gapes of Wrath (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 14 April 2019 21:40 (four months ago) link

This is amazing. I'd have bet anything, 2-3 years ago, that this would never happen.

So much else to talk about today, I don't think I heard what used to be an ongoing story mentioned even once (maybe I missed it): this was the first time Tiger came from behind to win a major. Three times he was tied going into Sunday, every other time he teed off with the lead (anywhere from 1 to 10 strokes).

clemenza, Monday, 15 April 2019 02:41 (four months ago) link

Yah they talked about it quite a bit on the broadcast here

one month passes...

Bethpage Black a monstrous golf course. Spieth going for the career grand slam but, like Mickelson, I doubt he can drive it straight enough to win round this course. Guess Koepka is the favourite going in. The Nike cap he's wearing right now is so ugly tho.

oscar bravo, Thursday, 16 May 2019 12:50 (three months ago) link

Brooks playing with Tiger and Molinari first two rounds. Tiger doubled the first . Conditions look perfect but this course is just brutal and that's with an easier PGA set up compared to how they set it up for the US Open

oscar bravo, Thursday, 16 May 2019 12:54 (three months ago) link

Had no idea Spieth is now #39 in world rankings!!

oscar bravo, Thursday, 16 May 2019 13:08 (three months ago) link

brooks strolls round in 63 like it ain't no big deal. frightening.
tiger 2 over.
nice to see tommy fleetwood at -3.
conditions look perfect.

oscar bravo, Thursday, 16 May 2019 17:36 (three months ago) link

holy cow @ Brooks, that is an insane round on this course

kinda sucks that all eyes will be on Tiger

jeez brooks. just tuning in.

Hugely impressive front nine from Jordan. Think he hit every green. Didn't think he had it in him.

I must have ducked out somewhere--I thought the PGA was always the last major on the calendar.

XP
They've rejigged the schedule so that the US tour ending FedEx playoffs finish in August before the start of the NFL season and so that the PGA doesn't clash with Olympic golf every four years so from now on it's
April - masters
May - PGA
June - US Open
July - Open

oscar bravo, Thursday, 16 May 2019 20:51 (three months ago) link

Lol Rory starts his day double, bogey, double, birdie, par, bogey +5 for the day thru six holes and +7 for the tourney.

DJ 4 birdies in 6 holes , -4 in second place behind Brooks who plays in the afternoon wave.
Danny Lee was in second but has dropped five shots thru 11 holes.

oscar bravo, Friday, 17 May 2019 13:57 (three months ago) link

I really want to like Patrick Cantlay cos his back story is so compelling but man is he irritating to watch, so slow.

oscar bravo, Friday, 17 May 2019 13:59 (three months ago) link

Another birdie for DJ. Brooks and DJ duel would be fun, the loser being the one who makes an expression first.

oscar bravo, Friday, 17 May 2019 14:03 (three months ago) link

Lol no majors between August and March is fucked up man

xyzzzz__, Friday, 17 May 2019 14:16 (three months ago) link

Beemer! birdies 5 of the last 6 to probably make the cut. amazing around that course.

another good round from spieth. maybe he's back?

oscar bravo, Friday, 17 May 2019 17:16 (three months ago) link

he was never gone!

imago, Friday, 17 May 2019 17:20 (three months ago) link

maybe a little gone

imago, Friday, 17 May 2019 17:20 (three months ago) link

DJ is my big irrational dislike so it has distressed me to learn he's doing well

imago, Friday, 17 May 2019 17:21 (three months ago) link

DJ played in the saudi event this year so that's a reason.

brooks starts birdie, birdie and strolls about with the air of a man who is bulletproof.

oscar bravo, Friday, 17 May 2019 18:38 (three months ago) link

kinda glad tiger isnt going to make the cut so we wont have to watch him play mid golf all weekend whilst the actual contenders get no camera time

but I can't let Trae do it I got Huerter on my mind (Spottie), Friday, 17 May 2019 21:25 (three months ago) link
