nandos - c or d

just read this few weeks old guardian piece on it -

http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2010/may/16/nandos-fast-food-chipmunk-tinchy

it does read like a bit of an ad
doesnt really talk much about this new type of place that is neither fast food nor the conventional restaurant apart from a few lines (obv we just want food that isnt kfc but is basically still fast food with prob a lot of what that implies, just better quality) but then i suppose the journo was more interested in the angle about (mostly shit) urban popstars eating there
anyway nandos used to be great but its increasingly flavourless now, unless you drown it in sauce

Will Self's recent New Statesman piece on it was a little better:

I had a quarter-chicken with the medium marinade, chips and Macho peas (basically mushy peas with a few herbs and spices). The meal deal came with unlimited Coca-Cola but when, as at this branch, the carbonating unit in the dispenser isn't working, this is a benison comparable to the one granted King Midas. I mean, what's the point of having unlimited flat Coke? It's a bit like having unlimited shit.

Still, I couldn't be arsed to make a fuss, so I just sat there in the sepia interior, dipping my cardboard chips in ketchup, sipping my flat shit and gnawing my chicken, which was spiced just enough to avoid it tasting too . . . chickeny. I couldn't complain. What can you expect if you're a middle-aged man eating lunch alone in a mid-priced chain restaurant? An entertaining gun battle?

the marinated for 24 hours thing is fake. sometimes it tastes like its barely been marinated for five minutes.

ROFL this is hilarious to me, we've had Nandos stores here since the late 90s at least. When they first started they were excellent - proper sit down meals, freshly char-grilled, it took time to come out etc

Now its all mall food court huts, the chicken is pre-baked/steamed/god knows what and they just slap it on a kerosene grill with a squirt of lemon til it goes a bit burnt.

Still shits all over kfc but the kero flame smell/taste is getting to me now.

property-disrespecting Moroccan handjob (Trayce), Sunday, 6 June 2010 02:42 (twelve years ago) link

both are dreadful, but kfc is healthier than nando's

same here, not sure why there is an article now, but then I haven't read the article.

I went to Nandos yesterday actually for the first time in ages, it was alright, the chips were not as bad as Will Self says but the chicken wasn't great.

I think it's pretty variable - which is weird for a chain? I've had pretty good chicken and excellent chips in Brum though. Kids love it.

In what possible way is KFC - which is deep fried, greasy and loaded with MSG - healthier than nandos!?

property-disrespecting Moroccan handjob (Trayce), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 21:51 (twelve years ago) link

this like hitler vs. stalin but nando's dressing is essentially pure fat. kfc is fried in vegetable oil. and if you define "healthy" as fewer calories, and order a regular adult meal with fries then kfc is usually fewer calories and less fat. msg is not unhealthy per se.

i'm basically not a snob about any food ever except shit masquerading as 'authentic foreign cuisine' that's actually unhealthy mass-marketed battery-farmed crap with a truly horrible aesthetic and ad-campaigns dreamt up in Satan's gizzard that are taking people away from actual restaurants because they're not just fast-food, they're 'a proper meal'

Mark Ronson: "Led Zeppelin were responsible for hip-hop" (acoleuthic), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 23:20 (twelve years ago) link

nandos isn't taking people away from 'actual restaurants', whatever they may be, or 'masquerading' as relevant foreign cuisine

doop snobby snobb (history mayne), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 23:29 (twelve years ago) link

restaurants where they prepare the food rather than heat up stuff from a freezer look ok I am being a bit snobbish but frankly having eaten at Nandos once this is more an argument born out of loathing than principle - and yeah they really ARE an easy choice for people to eat at - would like to see customer stats of places near recently-opened Nandos

and they do make out they're genuwine Iberian cooking - it's the taste of Portugal dontcha know (or wherever they pretend to be from)

The OG article was probably written because a new branch has recently opened on York Way where the GDN offices are. I tried it for the first time the other day (it was free) and I rather enjoyed it, but I think the prices could have been slightly lower for what you ended up getting.

Plus they accidentally served up cold mashed potato instead of clotted cream with our desserts. I'm not lying about this, one of the most WTF restaurant moments I've ever experienced.

I've never been but my boss, who is the biggest food snob I know, reps pretty hard for Nandos. I think as chain-place-you-can-take-kids-and-know-what-you're-getting it's probably better than most other alternatives in this country.

I would like Nando's a lot more if I felt there was value for money in charging £7 for 1/4 battery-farmed chicken and chips. Would rather go to Indian neighbourhood and pay £5 for whole tandoori chicken a la Green Street/Tooting.

Yeah, Nandos is like next to the cinema when you're going for a quick bite to eat and the cinema. We don't all live in London where you have 8 zillion eateries within spitting distance of wherever you want to have your fun.

(I have been to Nandos precisely twice - once because it's near my work and we wanted somewhere cheap that we could get in and out of in an hour, and once because it was near the cinema. It was OK both times. Nothing great, but it fulfilled its requirement in both cases)

ailsa, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 17:59 (twelve years ago) link

I've always thought it was just a little too expensive for what you get on the plate/tray but I suppose it could be worse - we live in a world where there is Subway.

I've been repping hugely for Safadi in Holborn, which looks like branch one of a future chain, and they do great Lebanese shawarma wraps or felafel, plus quite amazing skinny chips for £5.

Such and awful feeding-trough get-em-in-get-em-out set-up they've got going on. Horrendous atmosphere in there always. What a shit house.

Nando's would get fucking slaughtered in Montreal though. It's a shame because I admire the ability and efficiency of Portuguese restaurants that are run as businesses over those Portuguese restaurants that are run as Portuguese restaurants. Just once I would like to eat Portuguese-style chicken without unnecessary wait times, obligatory devotional rituals to Benfica FC, domestic violence, or rudimentary home-based wine production.

ten years pass...

I have both rational & irrational reasons for hating on Nandos, of which, more later, but I do derive some comfort from the fact that when it came on the scene here in the UK it was the topic of a heated argument between me and a Spanish colleague, which was one of those brilliant arguments when you're in fact BOTH right but neither backs down. Eventually we threw in the towel and consulted Google for resolution. I *knew* Nandos was S. African, while, at the same time, she *knew* it was Portuguse. Turns out that the people who founded the chain were indeed South African and it was founded in SA but one founder was of Mozambique Portuguse origin and the chicken is cooked in a Portuguese style. Thus was five or so years before I went to Portugal and learnt about the batshit-insane legend of the Rooster of Barcelos which gives the chain its logo.

Grandpont Genie, Thursday, 4 August 2022 09:58 (one week ago) link

Thanks for making me crave a Nando’s :D

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 4 August 2022 12:14 (one week ago) link

Anyway, the rational reason I don't like Nandos is that I don't think it's very good. Both the decor and what they serve...a really unimaginative menu of (iirc) three levels of hotness of chicken and salads and that's about it, together with the suspicion that the hotness is simply there to conceal the poor quality of the chicken beneath.

That said, my views may be out of date...I only went once, to the first one in Oxford that opened, in a converted pub in Cowley Road around the time the argument I mentioned above occurred (indeed, the convo may have been prompted by that). It was a work lunchtime do, and we only chose Nandos coz the chicken's halal and one of my colleagues was Muslim.

As for the irrational reasons for me hating it...its ubiquity (rather like Subway, do they really need that many in a single town?), the fact they often take over old pubs, and the fact that when a scurrilous hospital employee "borrowed" my mum's card from the ward safe and went on a spending spree with it, before putting it back there, that was where they spent half of the money!

Grandpont Genie, Thursday, 4 August 2022 15:19 (one week ago) link

I think the peri peri sauce is just not that special, in fact none of their sauces are anything below C-tier

link.exposing.politically (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 4 August 2022 16:55 (one week ago) link

anything *above* C-tier!

link.exposing.politically (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 4 August 2022 16:55 (one week ago) link

I definitely don’t think it’s god-tier food and I wish there was something half as good as my rose-tinted memories of peri-peri chicken I can recall from one childhood holiday in Portugal… but as a twice yearly hangover helper it hits the spot for me - but then again I’ll enjoy almost any barbecued chicken and it is remarkably consistent.

The sauces are very blunt and broad, but that isn’t going to stop my chucking loads of it on my plate :D
