(xp) Scotland and Ireland are doing fine there.

Yep you're def in the wrong place if you hate the sun, Dee! I love it, find it invigorating. I'll hike all day long in the desert on 105 degree it, working up a good sweat, happy as a pig in shit.

Hey, not my fault my stupid ancestors decided to move to this fireplace of a location hundreds or thousands of years ago. Stupid indigenous and Spanish idiots (and the one Irish moron who came over on my dad's side of the family). But thanks for reminding me to do some research on in-demand industries in my preferred locales so I can GTFO of this place and not have to see the sun so goddamned much.

Cloudy Days a Year

That explains a lot.

35-36C twice within a week in London. 4-5 days in a row of 30+ is itself still not all that common here but that's what we're looking at.

But it occurs to me...can my body really tell the difference between 30C and 36C? If I just refuse to acknowledge it's higher than 30 maybe I can cope better.

Really I'm just disappointed (as well as alarmed) that the first times I've experienced heat quite this high (as we did one or two days last year too) is in my home country.

nashwan, Friday, 7 August 2020 10:11 (three years ago) link

the next day the high here will be under 35C is...next Thursday. utterly disgusting.

Joey Corona (Euler), Friday, 7 August 2020 10:15 (three years ago) link

I am on frozen water bottle rotation, mist spray bottle in fridge, cold salad for lunch and ice cream later to reward myself for working all day in this hell miasma.

We had a really nice 10-day cool stretch but it's back to the (ab)normal August starting today.

miserable pissy rain here at lunch time

I'll bet it can. It was very warm when I left to walk to work this morning, by the time I got there - 40 minutes later - it was stiflingly hot.

Udo Starmer (Tom D.), Friday, 7 August 2020 12:49 (three years ago) link

High for tomorrow keeps getting revised downwards, was 34 now 30. 🤞🏻

it's hell

Joey Corona (Euler), Monday, 10 August 2020 12:58 (three years ago) link

Maximum temperatures today are expected to reach between 30 and 32 degrees Celsius with Humidex values near 41

hell yeah let's fucking go

the quar on drugs (Simon H.), Monday, 10 August 2020 13:13 (three years ago) link

Same here, more or less. As it should be.

pomenitul, Monday, 10 August 2020 13:16 (three years ago) link

good day to add some sprints to my run :)

the quar on drugs (Simon H.), Monday, 10 August 2020 13:16 (three years ago) link

I assume you hell lovers have aircon at home? all I can do is keep the blinds down and the windows closed (even at night it only gets down to 26) & so each day this drags on, it gets hotter inside, with no way to relief, save destroying the planet

Joey Corona (Euler), Monday, 10 August 2020 13:22 (three years ago) link

my new place does not have AC but I suspect every other unit does cause it's quite temperate

the quar on drugs (Simon H.), Monday, 10 August 2020 13:23 (three years ago) link

29.5 inside my apartment right now

Joey Corona (Euler), Monday, 10 August 2020 13:25 (three years ago) link

We've only got AC in the bedroom, so when I'm not sleeping I'm in the hammam. As it should be.

pomenitul, Monday, 10 August 2020 13:26 (three years ago) link

no AC here. i sleep in the loft. it’s.... interesting

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Monday, 10 August 2020 13:27 (three years ago) link

I feel for you Euler, having it this hot in an apartment in Paris is indeed hell.

No airco here, inside it's up to 28. There's a bit of a breeze though, we've been opening all doors and windows after 22.00 to get some of the heat out. It brought it down to 26 last night.

Scampidocio (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 10 August 2020 13:33 (three years ago) link

yeah opening the windows doesn't help when outside it's staying 26+ all night. it's the heat effect of this glorious concrete capital. there was some wind last night with all the convection but during the days, like now, just stillness.

Joey Corona (Euler), Monday, 10 August 2020 13:35 (three years ago) link

Yeah, and like you said, it's the city that retains the heat. Saw the metéo on F2 last night. Only place of refuge you can go to seems to be Bretagne.

Scampidocio (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 10 August 2020 13:38 (three years ago) link

yes, Bretagne is ok, and the southeast isn't that bad, Marseille to Menton. but the major part of the country is just sunk under this humid glove. Even Madrid is doing better.

Joey Corona (Euler), Monday, 10 August 2020 13:43 (three years ago) link

Lol no I have never had Aircon except on holiday

plax (ico), Monday, 10 August 2020 15:14 (three years ago) link

It's way more common in North America. Ours is a cheap-ish window AC that only covers a single room, nothing fancy.

pomenitul, Monday, 10 August 2020 15:17 (three years ago) link

window ACs literally don't exist in the UK. search amazon uk for "air conditioner" for a good time.

i think there are also UK building regulations that haven't really caught up with global warming that make it particularly tricky to install AC in residential buildings.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Monday, 10 August 2020 17:14 (three years ago) link

thank u for your service combating global warming :)

the quar on drugs (Simon H.), Monday, 10 August 2020 17:15 (three years ago) link

Today is hideous, worst yet, other days have been hotter but it's the humidity that's killing me.

Young Boys of Bernie (Tom D.), Monday, 10 August 2020 17:18 (three years ago) link

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 13 August 2020 17:39 (three years ago) link

So much better today in Paris

Joey Corona (Euler), Thursday, 13 August 2020 19:03 (three years ago) link

Never so glad to see grey skies and a sub 20 degrees temperature back in effect.

calzino, Thursday, 13 August 2020 19:06 (three years ago) link

Humidity is very bad today but it’s cooler and continuing that way. We haven’t had a big blowout storm to clear out the stale air, ugh.

caută tu singur (gyac), Thursday, 13 August 2020 19:11 (three years ago) link

Update for those of you who don't know already from my FB posts: I've finally started experiencing all the symptoms of heat exhaustion, including nausea. Which is good, in a way, in that it keeps me from overindulging and I might end up losing some weight in that regard, but is also bad because there's nothing quite as terrifying as uncontrollable gagging where you feel like something might possibly come out. Eventually I was left no other choice last night but to retreat to my vehicle, turn the air conditioner up to high, and spend a good two hours there cooling down enough to where I stopped feeling nauseated and could go to sleep. I figure I have about eighteen more days of this misery to get through before I can begin to relax, after living in this hell since late May. FUCK. GODDAMNED. SUMMER.

been a disappointingly variable summer here. in the 30s for a few days but dreich and rainy and not that hot a lot of the time. hate it.

commiserations for people who live places that are routinely "too hot" mind you

35+ and humid is also rough as fuck.

anything under that = give it to me please
