I realized that Iain Glen would be a perfect narrator for a nature documentary, which, come to think, is exactly what the Dothraki scenes are.

Iain Glen is from what is commonly referred to as 'classic' but in reality is saying lines wistfully and looking into the distance,

Yep. Just like that.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 20:11 (twelve years ago) link

Just finished Book 2 - whew. Was afraid I'd procrastinate right past the new tv season start.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 20:14 (twelve years ago) link

Would this be a bad time to let you know some stuff from book 3 is expected to be in Season 2 of the tv show?

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 20:21 (twelve years ago) link

They're going to need to spread the SoS material around a bit, so freaking much going on in that book.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 20:24 (twelve years ago) link

surely they have enough stuff from book 2 to squeeze in to 10 episodes without taking anything from 3?

Number None, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 20:25 (twelve years ago) link

They don't want characters to be absent for long stretches like they are in the books, especially as events happen simultaneously.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 20:26 (twelve years ago) link

trying to avoid spoilers obviously but i didn't think that started happening til much later

Number None, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 20:30 (twelve years ago) link

It amplifies later but is happening a bit in book 2

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 20:31 (twelve years ago) link

not a bad time at all since I purchased Book 3 as soon as I finished Book 2, I am underway. And more motivated, I might be able to blow it out before tv starts if I put my nose to the grindstone

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 20:37 (twelve years ago) link

Are you finding them a slog? I breezed through both 2 and 3 in about a week each, about to start 4.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 21:00 (twelve years ago) link

no I just fell off the wagon with reading in general lately, through sheer laziness. I love the books so far, the end of book 2 made me v teary

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 23:43 (twelve years ago) link

zomg u will be like o_O for 3!!

Btw, just finished episode 8 of my rewatch, and everything the Greatjon sez is so much lolz.

Johnny Favre (Leee), Thursday, 15 March 2012 03:35 (twelve years ago) link

I can't afford the blu-rays (;_;), so I'm rewatching on HBOGO with the interactive features, and everytime there's a little video of Martin explaining some family history I can't help but lol.

I mean, incredibly well thought out backstories - even if I have issues with his take on chivalry - but you know...nerd expounding on his world like its real.

will add that I never really appreciated Arya and Ned's relationship, but it might be my favourite on this rewatch. "What were you doing in the dungeon?" "...chasing cats."

stay in school if you want to kiw (Gukbe), Thursday, 15 March 2012 07:21 (twelve years ago) link

Ned and Arya together were so great...his fake-disapproval of her behaviour when he saw so much of himself in her, it was beautiful

Reminds me of Atticus & Scout in To Kill A Mockingbird, ie Peck and Badham in the movie.

okay, i just watched the whole season this evening front to back. this was good!

Wesley Crusher: Teenage F#ck Machine (forksclovetofu), Monday, 19 March 2012 04:31 (twelve years ago) link

I just started rewatching on a whim this afternoon, already at ep3 :D

We should poll the characters at some point, so many good ones to choose from!

Welcome forks! <3

I was thinking of doing a poll of the POV characters from the books at some point.

called my sister to tell her i was watching this and

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

I tell her I'm only on episode four and the first thing she says is oh man i can't wait for the dragons in season 2, no spoilers
i'm like dude, that was a big spoiler
and she's like yeah but it was on the cover of entertainment weekly
moral: my sister can be a jerk sometimes

Wesley Crusher: Teenage F#ck Machine (forksclovetofu), Monday, 19 March 2012 14:22 (twelve years ago) link

yeah but she said no spoilers

Number None, Monday, 19 March 2012 15:47 (twelve years ago) link

if you couldn't figure out this was going to have dragons in it you're a fucking moron

thomp, Monday, 19 March 2012 15:52 (twelve years ago) link

sorry, that was overly hostile

thomp, Monday, 19 March 2012 15:52 (twelve years ago) link

I'm finding Feast for Crows a bit slow so far after the insanity of SoS.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Monday, 19 March 2012 15:53 (twelve years ago) link

uh, i knew there were gonna be dragons, just didn't need to spend the next seven episodes waiting for dragons to show up
or for ned to die for that matter. damn you internet

So if i wanted to just jump into book 2 right now, having done nothing other than watch the first season, I could do that and keep up with the plot on paper just fine?

Wesley Crusher: Teenage F#ck Machine (forksclovetofu), Monday, 19 March 2012 15:58 (twelve years ago) link

Yes.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Monday, 19 March 2012 16:00 (twelve years ago) link

I don't think you should though

Number None, Monday, 19 March 2012 16:01 (twelve years ago) link

Book 1 and S1 are essentially exactly the same, except the book has more background detail, lots of extended scenes etc. But I still really enjoyed reading the book despite having seen the show relatively shortly before. You also get more insight into the characters' thoughts and motivations.

sooooo... start with book one?

Wesley Crusher: Teenage F#ck Machine (forksclovetofu), Monday, 19 March 2012 16:05 (twelve years ago) link

yes

EZ Snappin, Monday, 19 March 2012 16:06 (twelve years ago) link

Not compulsory but recommended.

why did I buy the DVDs and not the blu rays

byan wein (cozen), Monday, 19 March 2012 21:47 (twelve years ago) link

dude what is wrong wit u 4 real

I ain't got no dough so I've been watching the episodes online with the interactive features. It explains loads of little things about the histories that I didn't know. I'll be the Blu is stacked with that shit.

omg that is fantastic

I haven't watched with the commentaries yet

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 19 March 2012 23:44 (twelve years ago) link

The idea of a commentary track done by the kids is delightful but I am not looking forward to their analyses of the various sexposition scenes.

polyphonic, Monday, 19 March 2012 23:47 (twelve years ago) link

oh that's the SHOW'S kids? neat.

Wesley Crusher: Teenage F#ck Machine (forksclovetofu), Monday, 19 March 2012 23:58 (twelve years ago) link

omg ♥ the kids so much.

I'm finding Feast for Crows a bit slow so far after the insanity of SoS.

I think that this is the typical reaction, unless I'm mistaken.
