The battle that stang the whole 90s

Ill go with Mega Drive because it was the one i had and Road Rash 3 and Fifa 1994 were not on SNES. Road Rash is still the best game to play with people, beats GoldenEye, beats Mario Kart, beats Counter Strike

Chupa-Cabras, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Mega Drive. The WWF games were better, WWF Royal Rumble wasn't really beaten as a wrestling game until WWF Attitude. And wrestling games are what make consoles.

Super Metroid

Paul, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

nah you can't list 1 or 2 games and say that makes a system...it's gotta be snes all the way...snes was and still is the only system that had the perfect balance between graphics, gameplay and story line..these days everything is about dazzling you with graphics and cpu speed nothing else...i can list games (on rom) on end that i downloaded and still play 10 years after i had the actual console....seriously the console had everything rpgs: earthbound, chronotrigger, ff series super mario rpg....platformers: zelda 3, yoshi's island, super mario, metroid...even insane japanese games like parodius and pocky and rocky

jack, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I had Genesis when it came out and it had some good games, such as Road Rash and the Sonics and Sword of Vermilion, but I always liked SNES way better. Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger and Mario Kart and Street Fighter, whoooooo!

Jordan, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Wha? they called Genesis "Mega Drive" over there? that's weird. Yet... it doesn't matter, 'cause SNES was clearly superior in every way (except for sports games which only the daft could ever pos. enjoy)!

Dan I ., Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

And the mega drive had the olden day equiv. of the X-Box controller, big, clunky, black, shit for street fighter hadokens. SNES had the pick of the games as well. Amazing that Super Metroid (which I hadn't played until last week) was released at the arse end of the SNES' existence, just as the Playstation was shuffling in and it beats Destruction Derby, and Wipeout and all those other graphicwhore apps. that were being pandered then.

Have you heard the music to metroid? F'in hell.

And Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo was best on the SNES as you could actually play it properly, ie not jump when you go to do Hadokens or Shuryukens.

We could list the games that SNES had that were class A, 10/10: Mario Kart, Mario World, Super Metroid, Probotector, Mega Man, F Zero, ISS (first appeared on the SNES), Donkey Kong Country (those kart levels, like that bit in Indiana Jones) - fact of the matter is that Nintendo's four Research and development teams know plot structure, level structure, control ergonomics, etc inside out.

And if you ask me they've only gone from strength to strength. Ocarina of Time being, possibly, the biggest gapjump in the history of comp. games. Look at the progression from Zelda snes to Ocarina. The fighting scheme - Z targeting = genius. And the new one, Celda, or cel-shaded Zelda... Aww mannnn... only worry is that the creator of Metroid died recently in a car crash so will the new one be any good?

Well, the E3 screens look amazing. Now, the Dreamcast, probly the only computer since the snes I've not played. My cousin has one with 70 games (copies - not all of work, but maj. do) which he's selling for £100 cos he just bought a PS2 - should I buy it?

david h, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

indeed z targeting is classic

jack, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Nintendo were great before they decided to start making games for 7 year olds only.

International Superstar Soccer Playstation versions are the greatest games ever and the most satisfying football games by miles. The Nintendo 64 ones were only good for when you were pissed and there was 4 of you.

Ronan, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I can't remember much about either now...hmm...did either have Grand Theft Auto 3 on it? No? Then they were both rubbish.

DG, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Nope, I've changed my mind - it's the Megadrive, that had 'Toejam & Earl'.

DG, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Shut up Ronan. SWOS = best football game ever. OBJECTIVE FACT # 1. Nintendo - when have they ever made games for over 7 yr olds, then? That is, what's the difference betw say Pikmin and Mario? Pro Ev 1 and 2 are good. But not great. I've got the mileage now to state this. OBJECTIVe FACT # 2 - Nintendo make the best games, most consistently. Revolutionary games to Nintendo's name: Mario (created platformers); Zelda (strong case for created RPGs in their modern form); Ocarina of Time (revised that earlier creation); Pikmin (ever played a game like it? I sure as hell haven't); Metroid (aww, man, that music...)

Playstation = A Little Less Conversation of console world.

Halo - one ring to rule them all.

Bet you even liked FIFA at one point... teehee.

david h(0wie), Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

DG - GTA3 = shit. OBJECTIVE FACT # 4.

david h(0wie), Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

YES YES YES YES YES! Does he have Tennis 2K2 and Samba de Amigo? Doesn't matter, but it anyway!!!

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hmm, MarioKart beats anything ever, Zelda was pretty great, Mario was chuffin' fantastic but....well I had a Megadrive so I'm sticking with that. Sonic 2 was fantastic, Jungle Strike infinitely satisfying and pretty hard, and NYLPA Hockey '93 is still the best and most exciting sports sim I've ever played. On And Streetfighter 2 was better on the Megadrive. OH - and the Megadrive had better 6 button joypads.

Ally C, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I do agree that anyone that thinks that any football game that has ever been made can even come close to Sensi is dangerously insane and should have their views ignored.

The SNES was for weird kids who liked to play roleplaying games. The sort of kids that went to Games Workshop on a Saturday morning. The Mega Drive was just pure button bashing greatness.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Nope, I've changed my mind - it's the Megadrive, that had 'Toejam & Earl'."

oh good lord, that reminds me. i had the Toejam & Earl 'rap song' as a child. it was the special limited edition competition thing in some Megadrive magazine and it came on a cassette (remember them? like minidiscs but shit). this was before i became a grumpy adolescent that only liked Slayer so obviously i thought it was the best thing ever.

the game was a bit weak though.

wasn't there a Toejam & Earl cartoon? or do all my memories just involve old Megadrive games?

Wyndham Earl, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

button mashing games are pointless cos they are always dethroned when the next button mashing game with better graphics comes out...whatever..but you want button mashing? check out pocky and rocky...you have a girl that fights by throwin playing cards and her partner, a racoon that does the same with leaves...call me that weird kid but give me games with creativity any day....where else can you find a game like earthbound? i can't even begin to start with that game.....like the dinosaur stage where ness and his party shrink to 4 pixels in size to exaggerate the size of the dinosaurs? what about the end when your body can't handle time travel to fight the boss so your brains get transplanted into robots? i played the genesis around the same time as the snes and i can't remember a single thing about it...totally forgettable..plus it doesn't seem like you genesis fans are recalling the details about the games you played....

jack, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

GTA3 = great, howie = some kind of CrAzY mAn: Objective Fact #15

DG, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

But the SNES had Starry's favourite game that she haf never played: Harvest Moon. Sarah you would love this. Farming simulator. Amazing.

david h, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

For thse interested, Tom Jam and Earl three is impending for the Xbox.

Snes, of course, was far better. Generally better graphics and far more variety and general quality of games.

Shinobi, Herzog Zwei, Phantasy Star, and Sonic were all ok. But just not ok enough.

Super Metroid alone has more potential replay time than the entire Mega Drive line up. The game never gets old!

Cheif White Lotus, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

David H is the great video game lunatic of 2001.

As a young Genesis loyalist I was a little haunted by my knowledge of how the objective figures broke down btwn the two systems but who gives a f, Sega does what Nintendon't

A B C, Saturday, 16 June 2007 00:29 (sixteen years ago) link

SNES. It's not even close, really. I remember getting in heated debates over this in grade school, the argument inevitably leading to the point that Mortal Kombat had blood on the Genesis and not on SNES (which would always lead to the classic Mortal Kombat vs SF2Turbo argument (SF2 by the way, duh)). But once Mortal Kombat II came out that point was moot.

Man, I really hope David H took his cousin's offer for the dreamcast and 70 games. That's STILL a great deal!

Z S, Saturday, 16 June 2007 00:31 (sixteen years ago) link

I remember the kid across the street from me used to say his Intellivision had better graphics than my NES just cuz his mommy hadn't bought him one yet.

marmotwolof, Saturday, 16 June 2007 00:33 (sixteen years ago) link

or maybe it was a ColecoVision

marmotwolof, Saturday, 16 June 2007 00:34 (sixteen years ago) link

It was pretty rough being a Segahead in the end of the 16-bit era. They dominated for the better part of my youth and then the second I get a Genesis they come out with Donkey Kong Country and all of a sudden I'm living in the sunset of an empire. But hey, remember Vectorman?

A B C, Saturday, 16 June 2007 00:36 (sixteen years ago) link

Genesis Mortal Kombat looked like ROTTEN ASS, blood or no blood. That said the Sega Genesis Collection for PS2 is pretty great, and yeah both Vectorman games are on it.

marmotwolof, Saturday, 16 June 2007 00:38 (sixteen years ago) link

SNES is the GOAT.

SNES. It had better journalism, in the UK at least (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Play).

hahaha now there's an argument I never heard on the playground.

"Nintendo Power? Fuck that shit. SEGA VISIONS!"

Road Rash is still the best game to play with people, beats GoldenEye, beats Mario Kart, beats Counter Strike

Thread starter on crack.

I think it's a tough call. I had a MegaDrive/Genesis for longer and had it first so I want to pick Sega but after replaying a load of games from both consoles on emulators I think Nintendo takes it. I still love them both.

Also, Amiga 500/600 deserves to be a contender in this for having the best Sensi.
