Citrus Poll

Having lived most of my life b/w the MW & NE USA, one of the few things I look forward to about the winter months is the general availability of good citrus fruit. Vote for your overall favorite: Not necessarily what you think is best for eating, but possibly for squeezing, garnishing with, etc.

Blood orange is my favourite to eat as it is, and my favourite cordial, but lemon is the one I cook with most. Like, an awful lot.

pomeloooooooo

dyao, Saturday, 6 February 2010 11:18 (fourteen years ago) link

according to wikipedia, the us is the world's largest producer of pomelos, but I've never seen them in a supermarket, ever. :?

dyao, Saturday, 6 February 2010 11:32 (fourteen years ago) link

as a key element in a good hot'n'sour soup, lime is king here.

tough choice between lime and grapefruit

I bought some honeybells (grapefruit/tangerine cross) this year for the first time and was a little underwhelmed.

I'm voting Lime

Enoki Doki (Paul in Santa Cruz), Saturday, 6 February 2010 17:54 (fourteen years ago) link

Kumquats can also be delicious and have a high novelty factor, however.

Enoki Doki (Paul in Santa Cruz), Saturday, 6 February 2010 17:56 (fourteen years ago) link

lol yeah, I remember being a kid @ having my first experience with kumquats. A friend's parents had some & my friend was daring me to try one. I half thought he was setting me up for a practical joke by telling me to eat the whole thing, peel & all, & so I was pleasantly surprised to find that I actually really liked them.

Screeching Weerasethakul (Pillbox), Saturday, 6 February 2010 18:06 (fourteen years ago) link

Lime is going to take this in a walk if we're talking about cooking. The depth of flavour a small lime adds to a chilli is amazing.

of the ones on this list, I want to try the blood orange the most.

is your fruit basket nailed to the wall?

Screeching Weerasethakul (Pillbox), Sunday, 7 February 2010 05:23 (fourteen years ago) link

not nailed, it is attached by the power of CITRUS

99. The Juggalo Teacher (dyao), Sunday, 7 February 2010 05:27 (fourteen years ago) link

these are all great but in terms of what will i never turn down, yellow/white grapefruit is it. perfect balance of tart and sweet.

like how a tart citrus will make your head break out in a sweat

99. The Juggalo Teacher (dyao), Sunday, 7 February 2010 12:43 (fourteen years ago) link

I have a love/hate relationship with citrus you eat out of hand--a delicious specimin is otherworldly, but it is pretty much impossible to tell a priori if it is going to be a good one or not. With melon, pineapple, etc you can pretty much tell, but with citrus it is always a roll of the dice.

Most reliably good iirc are grapefruits and minneolas (sp? I think this may be the honeybell cited above?). I have been burned by MULTIPLE crates of clemintines recently.

quincie, Sunday, 7 February 2010 14:10 (fourteen years ago) link

specimen, even

quincie, Sunday, 7 February 2010 14:10 (fourteen years ago) link

yes minneolas are the best even if sometimes hard to find, that's why i vote tangelo. i like pink grapefruit a lot though.

harbl, Sunday, 7 February 2010 14:14 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah that's pretty otm. the little 'uns in my fruit basket are actually pretty tart. I like pomelos because you can usually tell - if the skin is loose, it means it's usually pretty sweet. xp

99. The Juggalo Teacher (dyao), Sunday, 7 February 2010 14:17 (fourteen years ago) link

last winter I was in china for about two weeks on a teaching trip, right when citrus season was peaking - omg, ate so many pounds of clementines or whatever, all of them absolutely sweet with no tartness.

99. The Juggalo Teacher (dyao), Sunday, 7 February 2010 14:18 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm a big tartness fan, so I'm OK if something is sourish, but I hate the dry/stringy/bitter/DRY disappointment that citrus threatens.

quincie, Sunday, 7 February 2010 14:20 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, the occasional dry citrus - how can that be?

System, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 00:01 (fourteen years ago) link

I guess I'd better vote in this thing before time runs out.. As I mentioned upthread, the UGLI is my new love (its like a tart tangerine, but w/ the bitter aftertaste of a grapefruit NOM), but this has not stood the test of time & could be a passing fancy. Lemons for drinking & limes for cooking. When it is in its prime & super-fresh, the ruby red grapefruit would be my absolute all-time favorite, but I think I'm going to have to go with the plain old orange for its overall versatility & reliability. Seriously, I've been eating about four of the things daily of late.

What's the consensus on Meyer lemons? Hear great things but have never had. Are they sweet enough to eat alone?

This object perpetually attempts to sell itself on eBay. (Stevie D), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:03 (fourteen years ago) link

Meyer lemons have a higher yield of juice than regular lemons which make them great for cooking.

Slightly more bitter/complex tasting as well.

seriously blood oranges are the most overrated citrus imo

they look cool for garnishes and are nice in desserts (sorbet, creme brulee) imo.

yeah and they make for a pretty cocktail, but I've never had a good one eaten out of hand.

Man or Austro-Hungarian? (Pillbox), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 18:40 (fourteen years ago) link

tho soon my parents will be heading back north from FLA & will bring me my yearly box of these ruby reds they buy from a local orchard (for pennies!) - just the goddam most delicious things ever

Man or Austro-Hungarian? (Pillbox), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 18:42 (fourteen years ago) link

Meyer lemons are part orange and part lemon. They have the tartness of lemons but they're sweeter. The idiosyncratic nature of my predilections has led me on more than one occasion to eat a Meyer's lemon on its own.

Il suffit de ne pas l'envier (Michael White), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 18:49 (fourteen years ago) link

I routinely tell people that the lime is more or less the "lemon 2.0"--most anything you make with lemons can be improved by substituting lime. We need Meyer limes.

Had my first pomelo yesterday. The rind was a bit of a pain, but I'm going back to the store tonight to scoop up a bunch of these. Like a grapefruit without tasting like crap. No idea why they aren't more popular.
