Not possible anymore. Fuck these fuckers.

New battery at the A store is about $100

calstars, Thursday, 9 November 2017 12:04 (six years ago) link

So that would be a new battery designed to cope with the new iOS? Even if I place it in my 5S?

(5S still only two years old btw, it shouldn't have to be this way etc)

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 9 November 2017 12:10 (six years ago) link

the autocorrect has been changed somehow in iOS 11 and the fucking thing keeps making odd capitalizations. Driving me bananas.

Randall Jarrell (dandydonweiner), Thursday, 9 November 2017 13:45 (six years ago) link

did you check in settings to see what's using battery?

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Thursday, 9 November 2017 15:52 (six years ago) link

I did but it's not really helpful. 45% whatsapp, sure, but 45% used to last way longer.. I revoked most of the auto-background checks for my apps etc.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 9 November 2017 16:10 (six years ago) link

did you revoke them for whatsapp?

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Thursday, 9 November 2017 16:26 (six years ago) link

Ok, used maps for no longer than 30 seconds, and boom: it dropped from 20 to 7%. In savings mode! :(

was it especially cold that day?

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 9 November 2017 21:22 (six years ago) link

Not really, I was in my warm car for over an hour. Is cold known to drain the battery?

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 9 November 2017 21:37 (six years ago) link

LBI - 2 years is not a unreasonable time to expect a battery to fail if you use your phone on a regular basis throughout the day. Your charge cycle count is probably pretty high.

calstars, Thursday, 9 November 2017 21:44 (six years ago) link

Hmm, before iOS11 I'd charge at night and almost never found it under 20% at the end of the day. But if it's the battery, ok.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 9 November 2017 21:50 (six years ago) link

wrt cold, on especially biting winter days in NYC I've had phones go straight from 20% to shutdown

harbinger of failure (Jon not Jon), Thursday, 9 November 2017 22:19 (six years ago) link

that was pretty common on my iphone 5. my 6 has been good though. it's three years old at this point so its poor battery life is due to any number of things.

agree that iOS 11 has slowed it down to molasses though.

, Thursday, 9 November 2017 22:29 (six years ago) link

i don't want to jinx it but my SE seems fine? it's only 1 year old though. and i got the one with the enormous SSD.

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 9 November 2017 22:31 (six years ago) link

Hmm.. I kind of hope it's my battery instead of an iOS problem tbf. Will look into getting a new one.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 9 November 2017 22:33 (six years ago) link

My iPhone 6 battery started fritzing exactly like yours, about 2.5 years in, and crapped out exactly three years to the date I got it. I went the $100 route because I needed it fixed asap, but iFixit has a pretty easy $25 kit5 kit to DIY.

ヽ(´ー`)┌ (CompuPost), Thursday, 9 November 2017 22:51 (six years ago) link

my iphone did the same after 2.5 years (instant collapse from ~30% to dead), but only on cold days. at the time i didn't think about it as a fault, just thought lithium ion was being lithium ion.

More thoughts on the X, I really like the gestures! I can’t imagine interacting with phone in any other way right now. Agree with many people that the control center location is not ideal, but doesn’t bother me too much since I’ve gotten pretty good at the reachability gesture. I’ve seen suggestions to improve it by moving to a force touch on the home bar, or putting as a card on the right when you are in the app switcher.

Still miss the width of the plus though, it just seems more valuable than height. Sign me up for a X+ next year.

Jeff, Friday, 10 November 2017 16:15 (six years ago) link

i want to pin a post on this thread every time a new iOS comes out that says "it's much much more likely that your battery is old and you're maybe using your phone a little bit more than usual to check out the new os, than the os has broken your battery. new batteries are like $30."

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Friday, 10 November 2017 17:22 (six years ago) link

have you tried repairing permissions

mh, Friday, 10 November 2017 20:17 (six years ago) link

Reset the PRAM

calstars, Friday, 10 November 2017 20:36 (six years ago) link

And call me in the morning

calstars, Friday, 10 November 2017 20:36 (six years ago) link

There’s fuck all to check out in 11 tho. It’s like the same OS except with loads of bugs introduced in Core frameworks that didn’t even need touched.

stet, Saturday, 11 November 2017 03:40 (six years ago) link

got the iphone x - it's nice!

, Monday, 13 November 2017 14:31 (six years ago) link

did you ever get giant iPad, or is that still the dream?

mh, Monday, 13 November 2017 14:48 (six years ago) link

i got the ipad pro with the slimmer bezel, not giant ipad

, Monday, 13 November 2017 16:43 (six years ago) link

report back on your X thoughts after youve had for a while please

Spottie, Monday, 13 November 2017 17:06 (six years ago) link

hah i will but right now i'm really liking it. i think the best thing you can say about it is that after you get used to face ID and some of the new gestures it's just... an iPhone. all the new tech gets out of the way. everything works. screen is amazing and thankfully i don't seem to be affected by the issues that spencer had.

also the first iphone i put a case on and screen protector on, still feeling the sticker shock. i guess at some point i'll get comfortable without but jeez $1150 + tax for a phone is a lot.

, Monday, 13 November 2017 18:10 (six years ago) link

think of it this way: for that price, you could have bought a decent dishwasher and okayish refrigerator

the Hannah Montana of the Korean War (DJP), Monday, 13 November 2017 18:21 (six years ago) link

or a used BMW

ok a VERY used BMW

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Monday, 13 November 2017 18:24 (six years ago) link

Yeah, but who uses the fridge 250 times a day?

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Monday, 13 November 2017 18:27 (six years ago) link

don't have kids

the Hannah Montana of the Korean War (DJP), Monday, 13 November 2017 18:27 (six years ago) link

arguably you're using the fridge every moment you want cold stuff to remain cold, removing things from it is when you *stop* using the fridge

mh, Monday, 13 November 2017 18:35 (six years ago) link

OK, let's move this discussion over to the fridge and dishwashing machine thread.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Monday, 13 November 2017 18:36 (six years ago) link

new dishwashing lust objects

, Monday, 13 November 2017 18:37 (six years ago) link

been considering a kitchen remodel, I'm game

mh, Monday, 13 November 2017 18:37 (six years ago) link

the phone price is absurd for sure. but the market sets the price and here we are.

fucking truth bomb right here

harbinger of failure (Jon not Jon), Monday, 13 November 2017 18:54 (six years ago) link

I had one for a week and just returned it. After the initial wow factor wears off, it’s just a phone and does the same exact shit as my 7.

calstars, Monday, 13 November 2017 19:04 (six years ago) link

for a second I thought we were still talking about dishwashers

agreed to an extent. the biggest factor for me this time around wasn't faceID but the OLED screen

, Monday, 13 November 2017 21:22 (six years ago) link

yeah dont care about FaceID or edge-to-edge screen but OLED is a big draw

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Monday, 13 November 2017 22:01 (six years ago) link

i keep seeing reports of uneven screen brightness, but i thought eradicating stuff like that was the whole point of oled

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 13 November 2017 22:55 (six years ago) link

Here are the expected phones next year. Middle one is "iPhone XS". Left is "iPhone X Plus". Right one has a non-OLED screen.

Spottie, Monday, 13 November 2017 23:38 (six years ago) link

Would def go for the 6.5.

Jeff, Monday, 13 November 2017 23:47 (six years ago) link

things gonna cost more than a new iMac

“iPhone X Series 2 S Edition”

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 14 November 2017 00:17 (six years ago) link

After the 6.5 it’s less than an inch and a half more to get to the iPad mini at 7.9.

what's the current thinking on the best 'basic' (i.e. facebook, youtube, browsing, light photo editing only) mac laptop? macbook or the pro?
