ugg boots make me sick. lumpen, shapeless, furry old granny boots. how they ever came to be 'a thing' is a total mystery to me.

it's actually u-umlaut. Gü.

thomp, Friday, 18 December 2009 17:25 (nine years ago) link

I think the idea is you read it 'goo' but whenever I see an umlaut I make some kind of weird throat-noise which is more or less what my high school teacher told me to do so it's more like 'gyetch'

Yeah, they are good for putting bombay mix, peanuts etc into.

As I arrived home today there was a local lad wearing men's UGG boots swaggering down the street - not a good look.

So on balance, Gu.

I just want to stick up for hot assed Southern California sorority girls wearing UGGs around 2005 back when they were new. I was convincingly rocked.

Er, except they aren't new, they are an Australian shoe that's existed since the 70s and was pretty much exclusively worn either as a bedtime slipper shoe or by bogans/white trash when they went to the shops in their acid wash jeans and flannies. No one with any class or taste or money wore the things, they've been a bogan joke for many decades. Joke on you, rich americans.

millivanillimillenary (Trayce), Friday, 1 January 2010 11:13 (nine years ago) link

I'd say the joke's on all non-bogan Australians who didn't realize that they were such an awesome fashion accessory. Also, what about Aussie Dogs? Are those even from Australia?

kingkongvsgodzilla, Friday, 1 January 2010 11:29 (nine years ago) link

I have no idea what those are.

millivanillimillenary (Trayce), Friday, 1 January 2010 11:39 (nine years ago) link

: ) They're pretty much the same thing, but I suspect they're made in America.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Friday, 1 January 2010 11:40 (nine years ago) link

Are they as expensive in Australia? Because the price of Uggs is kind of outrageous for something so ugly.

Madchen, Friday, 1 January 2010 12:15 (nine years ago) link

So many Gü ramekins round this flat. They're pretty expensive at RRP but have been 2-for-1 or 3-for-2 quite often at Sainsbury's over the past year, which makes them a reasonable price.

Meanwhile, cannot think of any nice things to say about Uggs at all, but since I have just "upgraded" the ratty ancient black trainers I've worn for years to some kind of geography teacher-ish efforts (i.e. I accepted that I was old and unhip and maybe it would just be nice not to have my legs hurt whenever I walk for more than 5 minutes) then I'm not really the go-to person for footwear reviews.

brett favre vs bernard fevre, fite (a passing spacecadet), Friday, 1 January 2010 12:23 (nine years ago) link

Gü so obviously rules.

My better half developed an Ugg fascination a couple of years back, along with everyone else. It died away without her ever getting a pair, but then what does she get for Christmas this year but Ugg. First wore them on a slushy day, and they'd made like sponges before we even reached the end of our street. You'd think at least they'd keep you warm and dry, but no, they have no redeeming features whatsoever.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 1 January 2010 12:29 (nine years ago) link

She should take them on vacation to La Jolla or Newport Beach, which is the natural environment of the Australian sheep boot.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Friday, 1 January 2010 12:40 (nine years ago) link

My mom wears Uggs in winter because they're the only boot that does not unduly stress the ankle she broke/shattered five years ago, which was fixed with a seven-bolt plate. At least the Uggs are black. My sister also wears Uggs but this choice is consistent with her boganish wardrobe choices.

wilter otm. Theyre not really meant to be an outdoor shoe. I dont understand how they became a fashion thing!

millivanillimillenary (Trayce), Friday, 1 January 2010 22:24 (nine years ago) link

i got a pair of off-brand ugg-like boots for christmas (a little more structure but same idea), my first reaction was that i would never buy those and my second was that they were REALLY comfortable. so i sort of see the appeal....

Maria, Friday, 1 January 2010 22:31 (nine years ago) link

In the UK (at least) it was the tireless efforts of Kate Moss wearing them all the bloody time in 2005 which put them back into the shops, I think. She got great support in this from Coleen Rooney, which really helped them tap into the teenage girl market.

On a related note, current inexplicable trends round Manchester also include young women wearing pyjama bottoms out and about, often with Uggs, and having their hair done in styles similar to the mob wives from Goodfellas. Does the pyjama nonsense exist elsewhere?

Bill A, Friday, 1 January 2010 22:50 (nine years ago) link

it existed in my high school among band geeks as an "i don't give a shit" statement, but that's about it as far as i know

Yeah, I thought it was a local aberration but a look at google yields gold:

PJs all the rage from Shanghai to Dublin...

Bill A, Friday, 1 January 2010 23:08 (nine years ago) link

My parents came back with plenty of pyjama shots when they went to China. Their take was that being able to afford a splendid pair of pyjamas was a status symbol, so old guys would wear them out & about instead of just to bed.

Goodfellas was supposedly a microtrend a couple of years back in the New York area, but mostly for boys - I remember seeing a couple of photostories with kids all fake tan and wide-lapelled suits

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 2 January 2010 09:11 (nine years ago) link

my mom wants to buy a pair of uggs :( and now I have to trawl the internet looking for deals which will drop them below a benjamin

=皿= (dyao), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 08:15 (nine years ago) link

Yes, pyjamas thing is a thing. Have seen it v. occasionally here in Oxfordshire, but mainly in Belfast: at any time of day it's not wildly uncommon to see young(ish) women in pyjamas in the supermarket, and a friend reports that apparently they have a pair for home wear and a nice (warm?) pair to wear to the shops.

Or, much what the comments on that page say about Dublin.

⍨ (a passing spacecadet), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 10:53 (nine years ago) link

dyao does your mom care if they are ugg brand or just ugg style boots? because you can find (sometimes cuter) knockoffs for like $25 easily.

Gü is fucking delicious. But I think I've only bought them for something like 90% off on the day of going out of date.

I appear to have lost my little ramekins though.

But I did keep that Robert Burns Coca Cola bottle after the drink surprisingly cost me something like £2.

Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 00:44 (eight years ago) link

Apparently Ugg (Ug?) boots were originally just a STYLE of boots made by many makers in Australia, and UGG has since fucked a lot of them over by successfully trademark suing them out of using the word Ug.
