nabisco, Thursday, 17 September 2009 19:38 (fourteen years ago) link

Bigger as in more popular? Or bigger as in physically bigger?

jaymc, Thursday, 17 September 2009 19:39 (fourteen years ago) link

dealiebobber, whotsit, thingummy, hickamadoober

(I'm confused on this one because I think of a "doodad" as being fairly generic and a "knickknack" as being specific to small decorative items in homes, like small statuettes on end tables and mantles)

nabisco, Thursday, 17 September 2009 19:41 (fourteen years ago) link

My initial thought as to the difference between these is that "doodad" is more like "thingamajig" -- just a vague way of referring to any sort of small object. Whereas "knick-knack" is more likely to be a trinket or tchotchke.

xpost Ha, yes.

jaymc, Thursday, 17 September 2009 19:42 (fourteen years ago) link

hickamadoober? never heard that one.

harbl, Thursday, 17 September 2009 19:45 (fourteen years ago) link

Agreed w/ nabisco and jaymc - knick knacks aka dustcatchers are specifically ornamental objects. Most of the doodads in my world (random nuts/bolts/hardware, odd computery connectoring bits, those things that go on the back of a post earring, that tool for specifically opening CD cases, etc) are smaller than the average knick knack.

Jaq, Thursday, 17 September 2009 19:47 (fourteen years ago) link

doohickey!

maybe, perhaps...Yes! (doo dah), Thursday, 17 September 2009 19:48 (fourteen years ago) link

Wikipedia tells me Cat Deely is dating John Huston's grandson, but I sometimes fantasize about her marrying someone named Bobber, or the ghost of the Big Bopper, and hyphenating her name

nabisco, Thursday, 17 September 2009 19:52 (fourteen years ago) link

I think your average doohickey would be larger than your average knick-knack. doohickey > knick-knack > doodad - tho catchall terms like bric-a-brac, whatchmacallit & thingamajig could probably be used to describe most of what could fit into the other classifications.

dealiebobber, whotsit, thingummy, hickamadoober - in my experience, "dealiebobbers" were plastic headbands w/ springs & decorative.. well, doo-dads attached, no? Dunno about the others.

I thought there was a cheese-flavored squiqqly snack cracker called Doo-Dads, but I guess my memory fabricated this.

there's a whole bunch of extant snacks and candies named in this way, isn't there. someone get started on recipes for Bacon-Boppers, Whatchamamallows, Pork Deedlies, and Cheddamajiggers

nabisco, Thursday, 17 September 2009 20:01 (fourteen years ago) link

Someone killed that woman and put the doodads in her hand as a red herring.

existential eggs (Abbott), Thursday, 17 September 2009 20:01 (fourteen years ago) link

A doodad (or would I say doodah?) is by its nature a tiny thing like a bolt or a nail. A thingamajig would be bigger than a doodah. A knick knack is a decorative thing like a glass cat, and therefore must be bigger.

If you really wanted to confuse the matter, you could bring in geegaws!

okay what is creepy about that photo is that the snack items are coming way too far up her hand

nabisco, Thursday, 17 September 2009 20:02 (fourteen years ago) link

I think of a doohickey as being door-knob size and doodads as the size of something in one of those jars of miscellaneous things (erm, doodads) in a tool chest.

oh wow, I would totally eat spicy goldfish -- maybe a little cayenne or something. (I guess everything else in the universe is chipotle-flavored these days, howsabout that?)

brownie, Thursday, 17 September 2009 20:21 (fourteen years ago) link

About a month ago, my friend made deep fried padron chiles as an appetizer for a dinner party. They weren't terribly hot but they left a long slow burn in the mouth that would be awesome for goldfish.

l'homme moderne: il forniquait et lisait des journaux (Michael White), Thursday, 17 September 2009 20:31 (fourteen years ago) link

i wonder where to start. using shaped won-tons?

brownie, Thursday, 17 September 2009 20:35 (fourteen years ago) link

flour, butter, grated cheddar, ground padron peppers, salt. Mix and work in water by the spoonful to make a workable dough, cut into spicy fish shapes, sprinkle with smoked paprika, bake in a hot oven, send to me for taste testing.

Jaq, Thursday, 17 September 2009 20:40 (fourteen years ago) link
