I’m guessing the first one you mentioned is the infamous “demolition man” mission in which you have to pilot an RC helicopter 🚁 to plant four bombs on four different floors of a construction site — with a time limit. The RC controls are difficult to get used to and the copter is slow and unresponsive. There are also construction dudes with hammers and security guards with pistols that chase you around the site — luckily you can tear them to shreds with your main rotor blade if you get close enough to them.

I remember attempting that mission multiple 10s of times before completing it.

Just a few slices of apple, Servant. Thank you. How delicious. (stevie), Monday, 7 September 2020 19:07 (three years ago) link

The 100 package locations in VC are ingrained in my head - playing that game was all me and my flatmate did for about 2 years.

In GTA3 if you want to 100% it you have to be careful not to kill one of the guys who still has missions for you. Also don't upset the mafia before you've done all the rampages in their area - they basically one shot you with their shotguns.

psyched

calstars, Friday, 8 October 2021 19:28 (two years ago) link

Will def be happy to revisit Vice City again. Although I hope there isn't too large of a gap until this actually gets released, since...

To prepare for launch, we will begin removing existing versions of the classic titles from digital retailers next week.

Anyone playing this?

Was going to. Sounds like a real mess?

I have not, but I've yet to see one positive word about these. More like Glitch City, from what I've read.

I haven't and I won't but I've very much enjoyed the surreal, glitch-filled videos that have come out of this

frogbs, Wednesday, 17 November 2021 21:33 (two years ago) link

it doesn't even sound salvageable

maf you one two (maffew12), Wednesday, 17 November 2021 21:38 (two years ago) link

Please recommend some good glitch vids or casters…

calstars, Thursday, 18 November 2021 00:41 (two years ago) link

I have played VC and San Andreas so far and yeaaaaaah a bit glitchy is an understatement. Also badly optimised, running on fairly high end pc and it's still choppy in a lot of places (it doesn't matter what gfx setting you have it on either).

Chicks and Ducks and Geese better scurry (Ste), Thursday, 18 November 2021 09:37 (two years ago) link

this. I just don't see a patch able to fix all these issues anytime soon.

Chicks and Ducks and Geese better scurry (Ste), Thursday, 18 November 2021 09:42 (two years ago) link

I have however managed to spend enough time in San Andreas last night to spray 80 tags.

Chicks and Ducks and Geese better scurry (Ste), Thursday, 18 November 2021 09:43 (two years ago) link

Of all the shit that's wrong with these things, not putting actual mid-mission checkpoints into the stupidly demanding/glitchy 20 year old games is the thing that really tanks it as a project for me

Driving around Vice City doing the early missions (with the old music modded back in) has been quite fun tbh, though I keep getting bummed out at how old the game is and how old that makes me. 38yo man staring into the purple Florida sky as Crockett's Theme plays, just thinking bout things

I ran out of steam on GTA3 as soon as I got to one of the missions where you have to do a sequence of tedious stuff then loads of enemies spawn and someone rams you off the road and blows your vehicle up and you have to start again

hiroyoshi tins in (Sgt. Biscuits), Thursday, 18 November 2021 10:40 (two years ago) link

One thing I've noticed is that with the new brand spanking new far-draw distance how small it makes the map feel particularly if flying a plane. Being able to see Mount Chilliad from my Grove Street home is weird. Would it have killed them to add some haze? It all looks a bit Fortnitey.

Chicks and Ducks and Geese better scurry (Ste), Thursday, 18 November 2021 11:30 (two years ago) link

Same checkpoints!? lol hadn't realized this. Going to stick to PS2 emulation with savestates. I was a couple hours into my first time playing San Andreas when I heard about the new version and figured I'd wait..... nope.

If they want to fix this mess it sounds like they have to take the games they finished 20 years ago and start doing a proper update now. This would've been embarrassing as a $20 curiosity, it's wild they are charging full price.

A lot of reviews have mentioned this but to me it doesn’t seem…like a bad thing? Haven’t played the new ones yet tho

There's a shot from a jet at 7:00 in here that does a good job of demonstrating it https://www.ign.com/videos/21-of-the-biggest-changes-in-grand-theft-auto-the-trilogy-definitive-edition

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 18 November 2021 14:05 (two years ago) link

Andrew's video may show this, but apparently, you can see both San Fiero and Las Venturas at the same time from one place.

Here's where I said, ok, never mind.

The more I see of the GTA Trilogy the more I understand why Rockstar took down the fan remaster mods.
Yikes..
Even just playing the first 3 hours had some characters looking really bad. As I said, game ranges from like a 4 to 7 in quality, while the original is consistently a 6. pic.twitter.com/KUYj1EvMJe

pretty funny that a high end PC struggles with this

global tetrahedron, Thursday, 18 November 2021 15:37 (two years ago) link

Same with the new consoles, I can understand having to choose between performance mode and graphics mode on like fkn demon's souls or spider-man but how the fuck do these graphics warrant that (and it still doesn't consistently hit 60 in performance mode)

hiroyoshi tins in (Sgt. Biscuits), Thursday, 18 November 2021 16:03 (two years ago) link

Really funny especially since this was all supposedly sourced from the version you could play just fine on an iPhone 4.

Chicks and Ducks and Geese better scurry (Ste), Thursday, 18 November 2021 16:14 (two years ago) link

I'd be interested in understanding more about the financial decisions that drive these shitty, broken games to market. You know that these people know that the game is unfinished and is just gonna get torn to shreds. What makes this keep happening beyond all good judgment?

Lou Christie's Mosh Pit (Old Lunch), Thursday, 18 November 2021 19:02 (two years ago) link

Actually enjoyed a session on VC last night, even getting through Demolition Man with no probs. I think out of the three games this one visually benefits the most because of it's intense colour palette.

Tried the GTA3 version for the first time, just meh really. Still has frame rate issue unbelievably.

San Andreas is the most buggy from what I've seen, of course it's the bigger game with more scope for stuff to go wrong (a lot of polygon clipping in areas, ie car tyres clipping through roads) but I don't enjoy the enhanced cartoony experience for this one. There's also some annoying glitch when climbing over fences where your character gets a little stuck on the other side. On top of things I've already mentioned I'll stick to playing this on the ps2 thanks.

Chicks and Ducks and Geese better scurry (Ste), Friday, 19 November 2021 13:03 (two years ago) link

I did demolition man first time too this go round! Although the camera kept showing the floor above the chopper, completely obscuring it

I really wish I'd played all the way through GTA 3 properly when it came out when it still had that incredible novelty to it, it's too rudimentary to persevere with if you get stuck in an annoying mission in 2021

I'm not touching San Andreas, unless I get a sudden hankering to see a man with five joints in his arm ride a bike

hiroyoshi tins in (Sgt. Biscuits), Friday, 19 November 2021 13:25 (two years ago) link

hahaha yeah i rode a mountain bike for the first time last night and what the holy fuck at the animation ?!

Chicks and Ducks and Geese better scurry (Ste), Friday, 19 November 2021 13:26 (two years ago) link

They stuck an extra 30 seconds on Demolition Man iirc.

hmmm what could it be

Tracer Hand, Friday, 19 November 2021 13:49 (two years ago) link

I read that the demolition man timer was changed to 7:30 from the 2nd ps2 pressing onwards, but when I did it this go round it just...wasn't that difficult anyway? Maybe the reps I got in aged 19 still count 💪

This GTA 5 "glitch"/legitimate speedrun technique youtube threw at me made me laugh more than most of the San Andreas stuff

hiroyoshi tins in (Sgt. Biscuits), Friday, 19 November 2021 14:07 (two years ago) link

It's really not a difficult mission, just a bit tedious which nobody ever looks forward to.

Chicks and Ducks and Geese better scurry (Ste), Friday, 19 November 2021 14:09 (two years ago) link

xxpost I just mean like...do the bean counters have a formula worked out wherein they know that X number of people will inevitably plop down cash for a new/refurbished entry in a popular franchise even if said entry winds up being the gaming equivalent of dancingbaby.gif, such that they can afford to alienate Y number of customers who will swear off said franchise forever (until they begrudgingly plop down cash for the next entry)

Lou Christie's Mosh Pit (Old Lunch), Friday, 19 November 2021 14:28 (two years ago) link

That was my theory as well, they'll have done some kind of cost analysis which justifies it on the basis that the amount of copies they'll shift purely off the back of nostalgia & brand recognition will be enough to outweigh the inevitable backlash and negative reviews. Multiply sales across every current available platform and it's bound to make enough of a profit (especially at the ludicrous AAA pricepoint of 60 bucks) that the shareholders will be satisfied regardless of the lack of quality of the end product.

"Spaghetti" Thompson (Pheeel), Friday, 19 November 2021 15:06 (two years ago) link

Interested to see how this plays out as it's a real test of that kind of math. What's more confusing is, no one at all was waiting on this. Why would they rush it out the door? It doesn't make any sense. Yeah maybe something about more profit for the current quarter.

maf you one two (maffew12), Friday, 19 November 2021 15:12 (two years ago) link

I'm watching a dude on Twitch play it (haven't heard him complain about bugs or glitches much) and the radio stations ("I wanna talk about taxes" - "the lone star state?" // "the name's Laszlo" - "so yeah, Leslie...") & the fake ads ("Do you want a kitten? (meow)" "we have manatees (sheep sound), white rhinos (sea lion sound) - petsovernight.com") are still 100% CLASSIC

StanM, Friday, 19 November 2021 15:30 (two years ago) link

I'm not sure anyone is swearing off GTA VI based on another studio doing a shitty job, tbf.

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 19 November 2021 15:34 (two years ago) link

Yes the stations are great across the board. I esp love the gta 3 stations. Some of those fake pop songs on head radio and Lips 106 are really good !

maf you one two (maffew12), Friday, 19 November 2021 19:25 (two years ago) link

I mean the actual project was so fundamentally unambitious, it's hard to see what would've been £55/$60-worthy about it even if it had successfully cleared the low bar they set for it. It is a bummer given how many good remasters there have been in recent years

Astute observers will have noted that I am describing as very poor value for money a compendium I have also posted several firsthand gameplay experiences from. I quite simply woke up from a nap on Sunday and found that it was installed on my hard drive. It's crazy
