Ideas for ILX

Does anyone have any ideas for things they'd like to see - I've kind of run out of ideas for now. I can't promise I'll do them: some things are easy, some are hard, some might be unrealistic (need to bear in mind performance and avoidance of poxy fules and so on); also, how much it interests me is the most important motivating factor... It'd be good to hear people's thoughts.

I will put the stats thing back at some point, but perhaps in a bit of a different form.

Keith, Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:10 (eight years ago) Permalink

Oooo!

More poll forms would be fun. One that allowed you to rank the options from first to last, say, or just allowed you to tick multiple boxes, livejournal style.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:14 (eight years ago) Permalink

  • make a toggle option allowing mods to see either images or image links
  • let poll options allow more characters
  • get rid of suggest ban
  • pizza subs tuesdays

The mod image thing is a security thing. If it weren't any sort of issue I would just turn them on.

Keith, Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:28 (eight years ago) Permalink

Oh right, you've said that before. Perhaps I am ignorant, but I don't get why it's a security thing?

Love Gravel's ideas.

A preview screen. I've been tempted at times to just throw in a [//x] every once in awhile so at least the BBcode warning page will let me take a second glance.

It's a long and complicated story, but the root of it is that when your browser tries to go and get a picture, it doesn't check that it's a picture and if it's a piece of script instead, will just happily execute it, which can be subverted to make existing mods do things they didn't know they were doing (e.g. grant someone else mod privileges or whatever).

Keith, Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:34 (eight years ago) Permalink

a kudos/props/Suggest Unban button, with the 51 resulting in an automatic permaban being an aggregate of the two. last time I mention this, I promise.

N1ck (Upt0eleven), Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:39 (eight years ago) Permalink

I see. What about for mods that don't have that many privileges in the first place, like me and other subboard mods? Sorry to go on about this, but 1p3 is 90% picture threads!

Also, I think ILX is great as is and I would just say: continue keeping it simple and plain.

kid cruti (roxymuzak), Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:39 (eight years ago) Permalink

Roxy, yes there's less danger there, but you can still ban people, delete posts, delete threads, unban people etc.

Keith, Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:41 (eight years ago) Permalink

I mean if it helps, happy to unmod you.

Keith, Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:41 (eight years ago) Permalink

Nick, that's OK: suggest ban is the best feature I've ever come up with - I think there are any number of ways you could subtly modify it and I have changed it recently it to drop older SBs from people, but I doubt we'll ever conclude on the 'right' way for it to work, and the people who don't like it, I doubt will ever be convinced, so would be good if this thread didn't become about that; I've little doubt it'll be discussed probably at length elsewhere.

Keith, Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:44 (eight years ago) Permalink

Yeah, I wasn't really thinking of avatars!

Keith, Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:44 (eight years ago) Permalink

Yes I like this - someone described other message boards as having a kind of underwater feeling... That said, ILX isn't fast because it's minimal on the screen; it's because of the server software - could afford to put quite a lot more on the screen without it becoming slow. Not that this is necessarily a good idea.

Keith, Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:46 (eight years ago) Permalink

Surm, appreciate CSS might not be your thing, but if it is, then you can make a stylesheet to look like that and I'll stick it up... There are some instructions (a little out of date, but basically OK) here: http://www.ilxor.com/ilxstyles.html

Could there be a count of the number of users online displayed at the top somewhere? Just a simple count of logged-in users (but not names, cos that would be crepey). Wouldn't be at all useful, just mildly intersting.

Yeah that's a nice idea, maybe wouldn't be too difficult to do either.

Stan - I've never been convinced by people's anti-SB argument around the "for the lols" thing, because no-one can see it. This is why I didn't make it available, so that it couldn't be used in this way. That said, I've been considering maybe warning people when they get to 40 or something. This would only affect a few people. Also - I wouldn't worry about your own position re: SBs.

Keith, Saturday, 1 August 2009 21:11 (eight years ago) Permalink

S1ocki, I don't know what the issue is. I was asked recently to remove 'reply to' from webmail, because people were being hassled off board.

there was ever a "reply to"?

every webmail i've gotten has been unreplyable. which is ok, but maybe there shoudl be some sort of reminder to put your own email address in the message? or even an optional field for your email addy?

Would like this!

Also, if you decide to _not_ bring back lists of ILX-wide stats, I would still be interested in personal stats on on each person's profile page re: how many posts they've made, how many threads they've started, etc. Or at least a way for each user to see their own info.

Image hosting, can we make this happen? Maybe? Registered users only?

this wouldn't be problematic from a technical standpoint with the right constraints in place. but it demands a degree of moderator involvement that we might not be able to support.
It might, however, be good for the boards, because we've had a ton of great posts over the years lose crucial context because of image hosting issues, and we miss out on image posts because finding a decent hosting service to link to is a pain in the ass, all the time.

on the other hand this isn't a place for memes and pics, it's a prose chatboard from the late 90s and maybe in-house image hosting isn't something that we really need - I mean, our best stuff is all prose flubs. I'd almost rather put our moderator calories towards bringing back unreg posters before incorporating image hosting.

El Tomboto, Saturday, 6 January 2018 21:51 (one month ago) Permalink

Broken images are just part of ILX. Decay is life. It's building a temple just to watch it fall apart.

Like this thread, where watching the images die is an ongoing performance: Like Us On Facebook!

pplains, Saturday, 6 January 2018 21:55 (one month ago) Permalink

if you restricted it to reg users (duh), certain file sizes, and put a checkbox "I swear this is my picture and not just a freeze frame from a disney movie that isn't out yet" then I can see it not being totally stupid

El Tomboto, Saturday, 6 January 2018 22:10 (one month ago) Permalink

i'm with pplains here, i think. for posts / threads that are heavily reliant on images, i think people should just take a few extra seconds to use an imgur link if they want to make sure it'll survive the long haul.

I remember when imageshack was the imgur of its day.

Even those simplemachines forums, where you can upload an image directly into the "Add a Post" box, crash every so often. Then you see posts like "That pic of Joe at the tailgate was lost in The Big Crash of '13" and everyone adding frowning smileys along with their likes afterward.

I'm working on an image upload thing for Zing — the big thing with images is the bandwidth costs, so starting with just posts from it will let me figure out what we're realistically looking at there.

stet, Sunday, 7 January 2018 00:48 (one month ago) Permalink

i actually think not having hosting makes us stronger. the threads full of busted images are sad, sure, but most of those are sort of reposting frenzies where everybody's caught the bug of a gag, like putting funny dialogue under pictures of velociraptors, or finding terrible celibrity impersonators... kinda doubt most would want or bother to dl them and rehost them in an ilx-specific thingy, or that any benefits would be worth the hassle. image-list threads (claustrophobic movie posters, horrible 70s albums) tend to fall into text captioning anyway just in case ppl have images turned off or w/e. any really "special" images tend to get downloaded for posterity by one or more persons anyway, and when we have to call upon their aid, that actually reiterates the bonds of community etc.

maybe the only thing that'd be a really huge drag is like if the custom countdown graphics for a ballot poll disappeared, cause those are pretty dope. i'd get the argument for imagehosting with stuff like that - ilx-specific content, part of the contribution our posters have made to the collective hivemind.

Newb Sybok (Doctor Casino), Sunday, 7 January 2018 00:50 (one month ago) Permalink

the biggest drag is when the old domains get snapped up by malware types, who then use the image links to try and inject malware into our pages. That's hit us more than once.

stet, Sunday, 7 January 2018 00:53 (one month ago) Permalink

yeah I had to clean that up one time it was horrendous

El Tomboto, Sunday, 7 January 2018 00:54 (one month ago) Permalink

here's a draft use case

- a user posts an image, it has an X day time to live on the server as user-viewable; after that it stays on storage but isn't user-viewable; after X more days, it falls off of storage and just goes away forever because nobody cares
- mods can preserve images and bring them "back to life" if they are important to thread content
- mods can also rapidly blow away images in case blah blah legal issues / user request

El Tomboto, Sunday, 7 January 2018 01:01 (one month ago) Permalink

If stet could find an image-hosting service that was free and lasted forever, then sure, I'd be all for it. I'm a serial image poster, especially when they make no sense and have no relevance to the thread.

But that said, Doctor Casino OTM. On the Hüsker Dü countdown thread, I hosted all the images on Photobucket which all turned into hotlinking images recently. I had all the images still on a folder on my hard drive, so I was able to re-upload them all through Imgur, even though the broken images are still scattered throughout the thread. No big deal, not big enough at least to warrant extra expenses and coding.
