Jess was the one that was dressed as Zorro.

Nicole, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I nearly died laughing. 90% of the songs were either Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, or Christina Aguilera. Atlanta and Miami (natch) had the hottest girls.

J Blount, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Jess was the one that was dressed as Zorro.

Okay, *now* I'm interested.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Awesome and entertaining, and I'll definitely tune in tomorrow even though I doubt it will be as funny. I was impressed that they accepted people who I thought were not especially good singers, and some who do not fit the idol body type. Seattle was hilarious as it seemed many of the participants wanted to be some sort of grungy superstar. Has it even been decided what kind of music the winner will do, or just that they will be big?

Vinnie, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I now wish I'd known when the New York audition was. *grumble* I wonder what would have happened if I'd walked in there and started singing one of the songs from "Die Schoene Muellerin"...

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Simon would have had a fit and called you the worst singer in America. Did I tell you the show was great?

Vinnie, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I was not impressed that they selected some people who weren't particularly good singers as they either sucked up in the most embarrassing manner or were 6-foot-plus beauty pageant contestants. The only one I can think of who broke this pattern was raspy- voiced "I slept under the air conditioner" girl, who did have a decent voice.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

THE RED SOX GAME WAS ON INSTEAD. ITS ON AGAIN TONIGHT.

Chris, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Impressed was a bad choice of words for that I realize. Intrigued is a better word. I don't expect those people to get very far in the competition, so I wonder why they were picked at all (and I certainly don't believe there are less than 100 people in America who can sing well).

Vinnie, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I thought they picked something like 140 for the second round.

I was SO THANKFUL that the kid with deaf parents could sing. Joei and I were expecting DEVASTATING CONSEQUENCES if he couldn't...

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

D'oh, you're right about the 140 thing. It's interesting the kid with the deaf parents can sing so well, since he may not have been as exposed to music as a child as most people.

Vinnie, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ah, I just discovered that this show is on Fox. That explains much.

j.lu, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

It does, doesn't it? :)

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Scary thing is CTV beat FOX to it with Sugar Jones, hell its season two already, boy and girl band. ooooooooh.
I find it disturbing that they are willing to show people music we know you will like in six monthes, tell them they will like it and that people dont seem to mind. Thats incorrectly worded but it will have to do as I am tired.

Mr Noodles, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

the mulatto Maxwell look a like is going to run away with this thing. He made Paula Abdul cry. Automatic winner!

Chris, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

NO KIDDING. Between him and American Scary Spice, I don't know why anyone else is even bothering to get on stage. (I kind of like Pink II, whom I will call Red, though.)

Dan Perry, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

so i turned on the tv to see what you guys were talking about. it's pretty bad! especially the little skits they had with the two judge dudes driving around, talking to each other. eep. so bad it's good, i suppose. whats up with paula abdul?? (straight up, now tell me)

Ron, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

the mulatto Maxwell look a like is going to run away with this thing. He made Paula Abdul cry. Automatic winner!

I'm pulling for him. He also has this sort of non-annoying Jeff Buckley thing (except he's obviously alive etc).

Andy K, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Jeff Buckley still annoys me when dead, I have to note.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

i hope he wins, he really sounded pretty damn good. Dan, your the singer, what do you think of him?

Chris, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

He's excellent. The break between his chest voice and falsetto is almost non-existent and he has good breath support (unlike the guy with the deaf parents who breathes after every other word). He's got a really smooth tone and the way he approaches songs makes me think he could sing pretty much anything you put in front of him, be it pop, showtune or classical. He's also got an excellent stage presence where he comes across as humble yet magnetic. Really, the only thing I think he's got going against him is his ridiculous hairdo; musically he's the best one I've heard in the competition. None of the other guys come anywhere near him.

The other interesting thing I noticed was how once "I slept under the air conditioner" girl hydrated her voice, she was FUCKING INCREDIBLE. She kind of blew her friend away. Also, they only showed her singing for about 3 seconds, but based on that Red is the best pop-mezzo in the competition.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think you guys don't understand Pop Idol at all. Its nothing to do with how good they are. Its whether the grannies like 'em or not.

Pete, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Also, they must be well-versed in political science.

N., Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Grannies will like this guy because they could turn him upside-down and use him to mop the floor while he sings slick get-in-yer-knickers love ballads to them.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

and thus dan has happened upon the secret of my success.

jess, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Why Jess, you sweet tease. :-)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

once "I slept under the air conditioner" girl hydrated her voice, she was FUCKING INCREDIBLE.

she's also amazingly hot, in an almost cartoonish way (must be the glitter or the pep?)

Paul, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yesterday's show was not nearly as amusing (those idiotic hosts! you watched the worst part, Ron), but it was interesting enough that I think I'll continue watching. Red is an excellent name, Dan! And she did do a fantastic job.

Vinnie, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

ready for tonight? Ryan and Tamyra are my faves so far from this batch, but competition is tuff so others could pull through. if I remember right - Chris, Rhodesia & Kelli were strong too. Ryan's got the sultry thing down, less peppy than others, perfect for smokey bereft torchsongs (but she's a Journey fan!).

Paul, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Chris and Tamyra were fantastic tonight. There was nothing I could find wrong with their performances and I'm sitting next to the phone right now trying to get through to vote (if it remains busy for the two hours, won't everyone be tied?). I was also shocked what a horrible job Jim gave. He wasn't just a little off like most of the contestants, he flat out missed a few notes!

Vinnie, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm so bad with names. Joei and I liked 1(Tamyra), 3, 5, 7(Ryan?) and 10(Chris?). Tamyra was far and away the best. Poor 2, though; I was embarassed for him.

Rodesia was very disappointing. Bonus points for gettig back into the key so quickly, but BIG MINUS POINTS for intonation. Likewise 9 did so well up to this point, then turned into a fucking Whitney-clone. This was somewhat forgivable, but to go on and say that "I Will Always Love You" was Whitney's song???? OFF WITH YOUR HEAD, YOU UNEDUCATED FOOL.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Rodesia was very disappointing.

Pretty awful country, yes. *hides*

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think Tamyra was the clear standout.

I felt like I was watching an Easter Seals telethon some moments, and then during others it seemed like the Gong Show. Where's Nipsey?

Andy K, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hooray! I got my choices through on the phone.

If you want to remember the names, try the site. It also gives some information about the contestants. Contestants in Simon-as- favorite-judge shockah!!

Vinnie, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

*swings low, as to hit Ned*

Vinnie, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeh, the first girl was best. somebody know what ryan was singing?? it sounded like "vulva on the side"?!?!?

Ron, Wednesday, 19 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

definitely Tamyra & Chris. Ryan & Rodesia are my next 2 faves - strong voices, might be able to shine better other times. hope there weren't too many sympathy votes (or he/she's cute) cast - Tamyra & Chris deserve to be the first 2 of the 3 voted thru. see ILM thread for more.

Paul, Wednesday, 19 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Is she really called Rodesia, as in Zimbabwe's (and Zambia's) former name - h?

RickyT, Wednesday, 19 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Sure I'm happy Tamyra and Ryan made it through to the next round, but why oh why oh why did Jim get through?? Somebody offer me a better explanation than "voting-in-order-to-spite-Simon".

Vinnie, Wednesday, 19 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Jim, sucked and whats up with his damn facial expression when he's singing. If the Maxwell Mulatto Look-a-like doesn't make it through I'm going be pissed.

Chris, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Chris wuz robbed! happy to see Tamyra & Ryan get thru, but the hosts/judges banter's gettin' dumber than ever. Jim got voted 3rd?! wonder if the show's rigged? it's a little too obvious - Jim = the underdog, Simon = the villain, etc

Paul, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

That was a total sympathy vote. On the American Idol message board (yes, I looked), there are several people claiming that they voted for Jim 500 times apiece.

Too bad he sucks ferocious ass.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

what if Jim wins? If people vote out of pure sympathy than this no-talent ass is going to take it. I think simon would order a hit on his life before he let this simp win. Maxwell Mulatto all the way!

Chris, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah Matos, don't sleep on TOTP! (BBC America - Saturday nights 7:00pm eastern)

Paul, Friday, 28 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

one month passes...
The black girl's going to have to stumble mightily to lose it. You've got Burt Bacharach saying he wants to record her in the studio. Paula's in tears. Simon says it's the best performance he's ever seen on TV. First guy - like a cross between Benjamin Bratt and Shirley Temple - horrid - "Always Something There to Remind Me" was thin, the girl kind of flounced unentertainingly, she's out - Maxwell2 is one of those blissfully unaware head-turners tha you desperately want to see fall in a puddle - didn't see the first girl but she looked like she had "attitude"

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 14 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

"black girl" = Tamyra = fucking amazing performer
"first girl" = Kelly = fucking amazing performer (and favorite to win based on American Idol message board traffic
"flouncy girl" = Nikki = was much better before the pressure set in; she's very marketable and if she'd only sing with breath support all the time, she'd be much, much better.
"Maxwell" = Justin = COMPLETELY on auto-pilot at this point; was way better in the preliminaries
"first guy" = RJ = not a solo artist, but could guarantee himself some success if he puts together a singing group.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 14 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

the honesty of the judges is so refreshing! i think this show is great - it really shows how excruciating even ATTEMPTING to break your way into ONE gig can be - this stuff is HARD WORK

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 14 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

They get put through such a wringer that the snide fuckwits who crack wise at our auditioners' sides are positively COMFORTING.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 14 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

The nastiest thing Paula Abdul has said to date is, "That was not your best performance." She's not a judge, she's a cheerleader. Note to AI producers: next time, make sure the performer judge is either talented or bitchy (or both, like Mariah Carey).

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 14 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

She wasn't too nice to Nikki. ("welcome to the dark side, Paula" says Simon hur hur)

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 14 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

do we have to watch again tonight to see who got booted?

Tracer hand, Wednesday, 14 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

She said, "That was not your best performance." What she said wasn't positive, but it wasn't nearly as negative as what Randy and Simon said. And it was TRUE.

Yes, the boot happens tonight. Bye, Nikki.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 14 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I didn't hear what she actually said over the hooting and derision in my living room... I saw a slight eye-roll and a look to Simon to "finish the job" -- you're right, coming from Paula this is a DEATH SENTENCE.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 14 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I AM AMAZED AT THE AMERICAN PUBLIC. And highly amused.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

what happened? who got the boot?

nicole, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

America kicked out RJ! Nikki (I've given up trying to remember how she spells her name) survives to the final four despite singing even more out of tune than one would think possible. If she manages to knock out Justin next week, I'm going to be beside myself with laughter.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Nikki (Nicki?) in she-didn't-lose shockah! What a horrible performance on Tuesday too... I'm wondering if America's decision wasn't swayed by the recently revealed information that she is a mother (I didn't find out til Tuesday, at least).

Vinnie, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

RJ is sooo cloying. Nikki's bad but... erk I can't defend her. Did u notice the shots of her violently crying son the other night?? I think he understood that Simon is a meanie!

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Simon's not nearly as much a meanie as he used to be. Once his favorite is out of there (Christina), what does he have left to be spiteful for? He could have ripped Nikki apart on Tuesday, but instead he compared her to Adam Sandler, who can be amusing on occasion.

Vinnie, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

They've mentioned her child several times; actually, Tristen is the reason why she was kicked off of Popstars. I agree that she was awful yesterday; they need to FIRE the vocal coach as she isn't doing a damn thing to help anyone who has breath support issues (Nikki, Jim, Ryan).

Dan Perry, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

watching Nikki cry after her reprieve, I couldn't help wonder if she was feeling guilty that her kid's presenting of the flower to her may have cost RJ the chance to stay in the show. also, after several weeks of being in the bottom 3, are her nerves shot by now or is she getting used to it?

after the fun of the big band episode, this week seemed tougher on all the performers. personal supervision from Burt Bacharach - sounds heavenly right? maybe it was the love songs theme - demanding emotional depth. so Justin sounded cloyingly unctuous on one of Bacharach/David's best songs "The Look Of Love" (unfortunate arrangement, too). Kelly and Tamyra still shone, of course... slightly shakey, Kelly's "Walk On By" was more a collection of great moments than a commanding vocal performance, but with such a strong presence and amazing vocal nuances, she's a pure joy to watch and hear. Kelly reminds me of classic Broadway/Hollywood/Jazz&Blues stars - like a happier Helen Morgan, perhaps. Tamyra gave a delicate, tearful rendition of "A House Is Not A Home". Radiating aura and dazzling vocal power, Tamyra commands attention like no other on the show. The showdown between these 2 could be phenomenal!

hearing that the entire series is going to be available on DVD, I felt for Ryan because this show is going to go down as the Ryan- cleavage episode... (sitting behind the judges in a leaning forward position without proper support is a recipe for... well at least she's getting extra TV exposure).

and Paul's all-time fave Bacharach/David tune? :
"In the Land of Make Believe"
both Dionne Warwick and Dusty Springfield's versions
(ILM/ILE crosspost)

Paul, Thursday, 15 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I would be INTIMIDATED AS HELL if I had to personally work with Burt Bacharach on a BB song.

Nikki was sobbing so hard partially because of relief and partially because she didn't feel like she sang better than R.J. I think she's a little too tender-hearted for this competition, actually. Still, I love her look and her on-stage charisma is overwhelming. If Justin doesn't stop fucking around, she could very well knock him out of the competition next week.

Dan Perry, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

and then there were 4 - who will it be tonight: Tamyra, Kelly, Justin or Nikki?

Paul (scifisoul), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 12:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

Logic says it will be Nikki, which means that Justin better have his bags packed.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 12:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

two weeks pass...
still euphoric after a great finale... somehow they managed to redeem the show and despite the obvious work, at times it seemed to be coasting on magic energy - can u feel the luv? - American Idol goes out a winner! Kelly's incredible renditions of "Moment Like This" and ESPECIALLY "Before Your Love" saved the day - lending MOR ballads unimaginable depth. a star is born!
my new theory is that American Idol is to 9-11 as The Beatles were to the JFK assassination, people were looking for a powerful feel-good to unite/heal them. crucially for music fans, though, what is American Idol to Pop? we'll soon see...

I haven't watched any of it, but my town of Amory is having a "local boy makes good" moment – Trent Harmon, one of the contestants who advanced tonight without having to qualify, is from here. He's 3 or so years younger than my daughter – he played the lead in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (as a freshman) and she was in the production as one of the brothers' wives. Apparently he's, like, really talented.
