do you think we, as humans, make a choice in matters such as these

yah def i mean at least in terms of allocation of resources i spend 0% of my income on dance for example but waste mad $$$ on eating out so obv on some level i get more out of/am more interested in cuisine than dance even tho obv dancing is pretty gnarly

Lamp, Friday, 3 April 2009 18:19 (fifteen years ago) link

lamp, as a human poster, and as someone who is willing to type the word lyfe, its hard for me to believe that you think the amount of money you spend on something means that you have more of an interest in it

cool app (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Friday, 3 April 2009 18:27 (fifteen years ago) link

first, what is the basis of these cultural divisions, where does dance begin
where does music begin
how can interest, importance, or pleaseure be quantified

cool app (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Friday, 3 April 2009 18:29 (fifteen years ago) link

the 'where does music begin' thing - i think it's more making a conscious decision on the way you allocate whatever amount of time or funds you have. sometimes i think you drift into these things (ie you like songs and then ten years later you're collecting japanese beatles promos, which isn't the same but is some variation in the same field), but it's still you determining what's important in your life by making it your milieu, dedicating yourself to pursuing/being involved in it. whether it's art or religion or whatever. that seems quite quantifiable to me.

Mr. Que, Friday, 3 April 2009 18:41 (fifteen years ago) link

straddles the fine line between "bacteria" and "cuisine"

ur an ugly hamster-abusing "girl" or whatever u are, gtfo (HI DERE), Friday, 3 April 2009 18:43 (fifteen years ago) link

this is tricky because my gut instinct would be to vote music but i'm more likely to argue with someone about food or movies whereas i rarely get into arguments about music so does that mean i'm more passionate about food and movies?

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 3 April 2009 18:43 (fifteen years ago) link

as a nonhuman poster willing to type the word lyfe i kind of do! its problematic of course like its easier to steal movies/music than ballet tickets and i have to eat and wear clothes regardless of my actual interest in cooking or fashion but its a decent proxy i think???

id quantify using money and time i guess - when i was a teenager i cared deeply about music: listened to it, made it, bought records, argued on the internet about it, forced ppl to listen to things i loved, dreamed about it. now i never get sweaty over music, i still listen to lots but im not interested to the same extent and i could live w/o music if i had to

thats not new or interesting i mean getting older &c but i still feel that way abt some things (books mostly sometimes video games or photographs) some kind of inner zeal that i burn w/ and gets me to invest disproportionate time and money into these things

explain

Mr. Que, Friday, 3 April 2009 18:51 (fifteen years ago) link

first, I would like to post a picture of nietzsche

cool app (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Friday, 3 April 2009 18:52 (fifteen years ago) link

Ultimately everything you choose to spend time, money and energy on has some degree of selfish worth to you; you are doing it either because the direct thing you are doing gives you an intangible feeling of "good" (ie, you like the way you feel when you do it) or it will lead to something else that will give you that intangible feeling of good, so regardless of what you pick here the correct answer is always "you are investing in what you think will make you happy".

I don't think that's the point of the poll, though; that seems to be about "what is the thing most likely to give you that feeling?" or "what do you spend the most effort on in an attempt to gain that feeling?"

ur an ugly hamster-abusing "girl" or whatever u are, gtfo (HI DERE), Friday, 3 April 2009 18:54 (fifteen years ago) link

like sometimes it becomes habitual and affection for music becomes the pursuit of musical paraphernalia, which isn't really the music itself but a thrill-of-the-chase pursuit tangentially related to music - right?

i still think if you're broadly identifying the areas one is interested in then it counts as music because it's a subsection of that milieu, but it's true that it's something else. it's like liking religion because you like hymns, or liking activism because you like jumping around on oil tankers.

corps of discovery (schlump), Friday, 3 April 2009 18:55 (fifteen years ago) link

cool app i think i get what u mean but maybe not i mean like i dont really understand either the external or internal boundaries btw music/dance really but there are non-superficial boundaries at least enough that u can talk abt them separately

i also do think if ppl are invested in something deeply enough than it becomes a way of thinking/seeing and so even one of the others is colored by that like the whole thing w/thinking of music in terms of painting or vice versa

Lamp, Friday, 3 April 2009 18:56 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't believe for one second that anyone can think of music in terms of painting but then again I don't believe that anything can be seperated from anything else

really?? i thought i followed u on the standom is standom regardless of yr fixation and yr standom is not really about battlestar gallactica or ann margret or w/e but the process of stanning or lyfe or something idk

but why cant u separate things at all??? are all divisions really trivial to you???

Lamp, Friday, 3 April 2009 19:10 (fifteen years ago) link

who thinks of music in terms of painting?

Some of these choices, however, do cover a bit of the same thing, like radio and music and television and film.

By cuisine, is the intended interpretation foodie, yelp restaurant stuff? With a vote for something else equivalent to saying, I'd rather have music in my life and eat reconstituted mashed potatoes, generic breakfast cereal, and macaroni and cheese from a box than forgo music and have organic arugula and goat cheese or the bestest pizza ever?

cool app (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Friday, 3 April 2009 19:24 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't think divisions are trivial at all. I think it's a significant method of identity formation and making sense of things, especially with the glut of cultural products and information we have in our society.

xp Byrne was my answer on the stan thread. Music is easily my answer to this poll.

Ultimately everything you choose to spend time, money and energy on has some degree of selfish worth to you

Of course music has selfish worth to me. If I can talk a good game about music, maybe make a good mix CD for someone once in a while, that's social interaction and approval from other humans. Awesome.
