question--i am looking for a bar where i can play settlers of catan. where is somewhere
a) in manhattan (somewhere between, lets say houston and, like, 42nd st--trying to meet up w/ people from the ues and morningside heights; i live in bk)b) not really crowded or loud after workc) pretty cheapd) they wont care if we play a board game and have some beers (i imagine this is most bars but you never know)

You want Hell's Kitchen, then, probably? When I briefly dated someone over there, he drank almost exclusively at the Gaf and Conker Hill. I prefer the Gaf but it's a little short of tables, so prob Conker would be better cos it has a few booths. Plus, Max, it's on the West Side so it's good for you and the UWS people.
That's all I got at the mo....
― guys i need to eliminate this business associate and im really nervous (Laurel), Monday, 30 March 2009 17:12 (fifteen years ago) link
ACTUALLY I take that back -- the Gaf has a whole basement full of tables, IF the construction/plumbing is done by now. Haven't been since December. You could call and ask if basement is open? That would make it perfect.
max i'm not sure if you have ppl to play w/already but monday nights there's a settlers night at a bar on the uws - cosi's.
maybe common ground i have no idea how inconvient thatll be tho

I (sorta) regret to inform you that my bar HiFi will be closing at the end of this calendar month, ending my 23 year tenure at 169 Avenue A. All parties booked before the end of the month will happen as planned. The story? Quite simply, the renovations we undertook a few years ago to reinvigorate the business were not successful in putting us back on a good financial footing. The generation of people who inhabit this neighborhood on weekends remain mostly indifferent to the place. HiFi seems to occupy a place square in the middle between “dive bar” and “mixologist paradise” — and while I hoped that would help us have a broad appeal to the newbies, it turns out that it translated as utilitarian (aka boring) to their tastes.
Can someone familiar with the current state of NYC bardom explain to me what he's talking about? What kind of bar do the people who live in the Brownies/HiFi neighborhood (or "inhabit it on weekends" -- are those different people?) now want? What does it mean for a bar to be "utilitarian" and why is that bad?
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 5 January 2018 20:51 (six years ago) link
I think he means they either want $13 cocktails or to be drinking with grandpas.

― 龜, Friday, 5 January 2018 21:16 (six years ago) link
I went to hi fi once in the past two years or so and despite the renovations(?) it still had the vibe of an old neighborhood place (which it was) and not really the kind of joint where 20 somethings would hang out given the multitude of options on Ave A, where there are more bars per block than almost anywhere else in manhattan. It did have a really cool, intimate space for music in the back.

White Horse tavern sold
Villagers have heard that “exactly as it is” pledge before about such historic places as the Waverly Inn and the Minetta Tavern, which were then turned into playpens for the rich and the vacuous. However, since the buildings contain 17 market-rate apartments it appears this deal is not so much to acquire a historic pub, but more a real estate transaction....
Author and radio host Malachy McCourt told me that he was prepared to lead a wake at the White Horse. When I asked him if he was serious he emailed me, “Yes I am serious about the gig. Peter Carlaftes of Three Rooms Press asked me to do it. He lives in the Village and is appalled at the destruction of the artistic life. So the answer is of course Yes! So Thursday, 21st March at 4 pm and only the God-guy knows what will happen, but let’s go for it!”
