this guy always elevates whatever he's in, even if its crap. pretty impressive cv, he knows how to pick his roles.

yeah auto focus may get my vote here. kinda dig him more in smaller roles than leads, tbh

i'm picking body of evidence. (i'm on crack)

Bobby Peru 4 Eva.

2 ears + 1 ❤ (Pillbox), Friday, 6 March 2009 21:09 (fifteen years ago) link

Dafoe in Streets of Fire was remarkable - the leather pants - the tormented facial expressions - it was like he was playing Klaus Kinski playing the part of the bad guy in leather pants. And then he went on to reprise Kinski roles: Nosferatu and Jesus. He's one of my favorites, up there w/Dean Stockwell.

what happened? I'm confused. (sarahel), Friday, 6 March 2009 21:18 (fifteen years ago) link

also dutch tv once interviewed him for like a 2 or even 3 hour program.. and he was sort of boring. (ok who wouldn't be talking that long)

Where the hell is Go Go Tales, my beloved Abel Ferrara's typically demented, damn near slapstick wet/fever dream??? Dafoe is game throughout, evincing none of the condescension a less adventurous performer would bring to the role. And he's really the glue that holds Ferrara's visions together (or holds them together for Ferrara which is even better).

in Go Go Tales he's like Ned Sparks or some other '30s character actor. That vision was not held together, however.

He's in that goth/vampire movie The Hunger for maybe three seconds of screen time. He says something like "Hey, Lady, How 'bout it?" to Susan Sarandon when she is in a phone booth having some kind of reaction to the previous night's vampire freak out or something like that.

"He has German, English, Irish, Northern Irish, Scottish, Swiss-French, and French ancestry."

"Dafoe, in fact, comes from a Midwestern, middle-class family, although his distinctive voice (omnipresent these days on the tube in those Salomon Smith Barney commercials) sounds like working-class Boston. “My mother had a heavy Bostonian accent, and there’s also something of my identification with New York and my romance of being a tough guy mixed in. But I get horrified if someone thinks I’m affected in my speech. My whole family sounds this way. The only difference is they also have a little bit of a Fargo thing going on.” He launches into an imitation of his sister talking to him on the phone. His voice goes up an octave and he looks happier than he has all afternoon."

I actually watched Platoon when I was like ten - someone had rented it and I had never heard of it, but "Ooh, a Best Picture winner, and it's about Vietnam, which I know nothing of!" Man, was that traumatizing. But I loved Dafoe in it and made what happened to his character all the more horrifying.

I love him in Wes Anderson's movies, he was great with so many non-professionals in The Florida Project. I still need to see New Rose Hotel, but otherwise Last Temptation is probably my favorite lead role from him. I wish he did more with Scorsese - I think his only other appearance in his work was a cameo in The Aviator.
