* Christina Ricci was the first choice to play the role of "Ronna Martin" but she had to turn the part down due to scheduling conflicts. Reese Witherspoon also turned down the role of "Ronna", while Sarah Michelle Gellar was considered to play the role of "Claire".

I liked this movie well enough to watch it twice. I waited 'til it came out on video, but made sure to see it, because it stars Sarah Polley, who I've been a fan of since her "Road to Avonlea" days. This is not a serious movie. It's fun, upbeat, quick, and for those with short attention spans. I liked it. I didn't think it was as incredible as some say, but enjoyable enough to watch it twice. So many people have compared it to Pulp Fiction. Frankly, the only similarity I see between the two, is the "jumping around timelines". Which I like. Good movie to watch, just don't bother trying to analyze it - you won't come up with much.

ha we just watched last week on hulu after reminiscing about what a great movie it was. i was 19 when i first saw it at the movies and it was right about the time i was living in a huge party house and 'discovering' drugs. also, i was living with some real hardcore hippy trippers who would come home from foraging in the botanical gardens for magic mushrooms and tell me they were convinced our roommate was an undercover cop. i managed to convince them otherwise by reminding them of the shoes this guy always wore.

Good film. Haven't seen it since around 2000, but I remember particularly admiring the way Sarah Polley conveyed the mind-numbing boredom of long shifts in a supermarket through facial expression alone.

i haven't seen this since it came out. at the time i was really sick of that post-tarantino indie-crime-movie fractured-narrative thing, it all seemed so played and "ironic" and all. disappointing because the movie's got energy and the cast is good. i like the opening scene in the supermarket, has a well-observed grungy-service-sector vibe to it. i wanted more of that, less drug-and-crime hijinx and amway jokes. i especially like timothy olyphant in this. i think this is the only thing i saw him in before deadwood, so it was funny when he turned up as bullock.

From Go screenwriter John August's blog

With that clarification out of the way, let me explain a strange fact of my career: I’ve not written Alice in Wonderland three times. It’s a recurring motif.

1995

The story that became Go was originally envisioned as a retelling of Alice, substituting the underground rave scene for Wonderland. As it developed, I pretty thoroughly scotched those ambitions, but you can still see vestigial elements in the first section of the film:

*Ronna, like Alice, charges boldly into unknown territory, and proves unexpectedly brave in the face of strange events.
*She visits a smoking psychedelicist who talks in riddles but ultimately helps her.
*Poorly labeled drugs are consumed with unanticipated consequences.
*A talking (telepathic) cat offers advice.

Other than the cat, these are all extremely tenuous connections. I would never claim that Go is remotely an adaptation of Alice. Rather, I had Alice bumping around in my head during Go’s genesis, and some Alice DNA worked its way into the genotype. For example, the yellow Miata was for a long time a white Volkwagen Rabbit.

1999 seems like a long, long time ago now. Some of the more Tarantino-esque moments in this, like the comedy gangster stuff, and the "blackness is a state of mind" scene in the car to Vegas, felt very clumsy, to say the least. But this was still surprisingly enjoyable.

Haven't seen this in years, and remember liking it at the time, but it certainly screams "1999" more than any other film from that year that I can recall.
