'"I have more in common with these gooks than with my own spoiled, rotten family."'

caek, Friday, 5 December 2008 12:12 (fifteen years ago) link

This film looks preposterous.

caek, Friday, 5 December 2008 12:12 (fifteen years ago) link

"Eastwood's initial vocal rasp moderates over time, just as his character softens toward the seeming aliens who surround him. There is probably no leading Hollywood actor with less ham in him than Eastwood -- just compare him to Jack Nicholson or Al Pacino, for starters -- but by his standards, this is a real barn-burner; grumbling under his breath or merely looking askance at the perceived lowlifes that litter his existence, Eastwood clearly relishes this role and conveys his delight to the audience, to great satisfaction all around."

^^^ will definitely watch this film.

caek, Friday, 5 December 2008 12:13 (fifteen years ago) link

like Million Dollar Baby wasn't both preposterous & dreadfully familiar?

Well, he IS lynched.

All in the Family + The Shootist

So his female lead is a Hepburn/Jean Stapleton hybrid?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 17:39 (fifteen years ago) link

well, his wife is dead, so it's more like Archie Bunker's Place if Archie had stayed as verbally hardcore a bigot as he was at the start of AITF.

much nervous audience tittering at the slurs throughout

(Lauren Bacall was the female lead in The Shootist, shame on you Alfred)

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 17:44 (fifteen years ago) link

This is probably the worst Clint Eastwood film. Surely he gets sent better screenplays than this?

The funny bits were pretty funny. Several big laughs. I watched it alone so was fine with the racist slurs/jokes (I'm white, btw), but it would be interesting to see how audiences react. Nervous tittering sounds about right, Morbs. I'm not sure if the closing song was supposed to be funny, but it was.

Worse than Firefox or The Rookie?

I dunno -- the acclaim for this flummoxes me. He spent most of A Perfect World and Million Dollar Baby uttering stuff like "If ya got sumpin' stuck in yer craw, spit it out!" and "I don't train women, girlie!" What makes this one any different?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 03:09 (fifteen years ago) link

does he exact his revenge in a satisfying manner - or is it all boohoo like most of his recent movies - this will help me to decide if i am really going to watch it

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 03:11 (fifteen years ago) link

OK, it's the worst I've seen.

I think the difference between previous Eastwood as old-timer performances and this one, is that this one is mostly pretty silly and hammy (which I really enjoyed in this case).

Not the best Eastwood film, but I did like it - maybe the most American movie I've seen all year (in the gritty Sam Fuller sense). Clint's Dirty Harry/Hank Hill is exasperating, but genuinely affecting at times. Looking at him in this is like looking at Mt. Rushmore.

Chris Barrus (Elvis Telecom), Sunday, 21 December 2008 06:05 (fifteen years ago) link

The tone of this was too 'moralizing after-school special' for me, and its treatment of eastwood's character's racism is a little too ambiguous.
It's good to see hmong actors and hmong culture depicted in a major film - maybe for the first time?

yeah this was pretty bad. even the best parts seemed like a cliche we've seen 1000 times before. old guy tutoring boy.. liked the scene with the hairdresser though. lazy ending too. and Eastwood's acting was the low point. (i* hated the growling)

Ludo, Monday, 8 June 2009 13:34 (fourteen years ago) link

When a director with Eastwood's past makes a back-to-basics move like Gran Torino, he's reduced to first principles: vigilantism and a creeping case of the cutes.

Bud Huxtable (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 8 June 2009 13:46 (fourteen years ago) link

Can't quite fathom how anyone thought this anything other than hilarious/terrible. Most people I know who saw it all expected something more serious but all just gave in to it and had to laugh.

And then the few moments of bad things really jar because you're all "that doesnt really have any place in a comedy does it?"

I actually got into a big argument about this with a friend the other night. I thought the two Hmong kids were really wooden and awful, but my friend swore that was "the point", that they were awkward kids. I don't buy it, I just didn't ever feel a genuine emotion out of either of them. The song at the end of the movie was hilarious though.

But on the whole I thought the movie was just okay. Some really awkward scenes, but I thought there were a couple that worked well. Not at all worth the hype, but not as terrible as its ILX reputation might suggest.
