Ant Attack |=| (Ste), Monday, 13 October 2008 13:27 (fifteen years ago) link

i cant even tell what country that is. the pointy orange thing and two church steeples make me think europe somewhere but that bridge and some of those apartment buildings seem america? wait. is that an amusement park?

Bright Future (sunny successor), Monday, 13 October 2008 13:28 (fifteen years ago) link

Bright Future (sunny successor), Monday, 13 October 2008 13:28 (fifteen years ago) link

lil yawne (harbl), Monday, 13 October 2008 13:38 (fifteen years ago) link

actually we could do this much more easily by working out which eastern european country's dictator-controlled national media outlets have orange as their signature colour

100 tons of hardrofl beyond zings (Just got offed), Monday, 13 October 2008 13:40 (fifteen years ago) link

Some bored googling of "cantilever bridge" and "amusement park" has given me the answer, you are all way off.

ailsa, Monday, 13 October 2008 13:40 (fifteen years ago) link

doubt it's in the midwest, since there's appears to be a hill off to the right.

Granny Dainger, Monday, 13 October 2008 13:41 (fifteen years ago) link

Actually, I think I'm wrong. Never mind.

ailsa, Monday, 13 October 2008 13:42 (fifteen years ago) link

ah got it,

I googled "green cantilever bridge" and then got bored of this approach after one fruitless page

No, I was right after all. Hurrah! Shall let the rest of you guess away though. Am assuming Ste got the same result as me. Not Europe.

Are blue bins that unusual? We have a dark grey bin for household waste, green bin for garden waste and a blue bin for recycling plastic, paper etc

Dan Worsley, Monday, 3 June 2024 09:14 (one week ago) link

We've only got grey for household and green for recycling. Garden waste your own responsibility to take to the tip or organise specific collection.

My parents have got 5 or 6 bins I think, and as I said above I found out the other week some Welsh councils don't have bins at all now but about 6 or 7 different bags and boxes.

Overtoun House windows (aldo), Monday, 3 June 2024 09:28 (one week ago) link

don't a strangely high number of these houses have new roof tiles? this with the repaired wall... was this a big disaster location maybe?

StanM, Monday, 3 June 2024 09:32 (one week ago) link

Nah more likely the council went through a roof replacement programme and the unchanged one in the middle had gone under right to buy so wasn't included.

Walls are replaced all the time - could have been due to other works.

These look like post war council housing stock of the 50s/early 60s.

Well done! You got it last night actually (Speke) but I didn't want to say anything when you were so close.

did you find the first one?

the first one is the house where my mother grew up, the second one from the right.

note the broken glass cemented into the top of the wall, something I always remember from childhood visits there, not a good place to do parkour

The bins were what made me stick with Liverpool, and then vibes, there were too many streets which were really similar but not quite. With the second photo, I was on Fenton Grove yesterday but not Fenton Close. Yes it sort of could be anywhere but it was like a twin

Tow Law City (cherry blossom), Monday, 3 June 2024 10:05 (one week ago) link

impressive! well done team :-)

StanM, Monday, 3 June 2024 10:17 (one week ago) link

Quite a mix of people. There's a woman there with a backpack, tracksuit bottoms and bare shoulders, and another wearing tights and short shorts - so I'm thinking we're not in a muslim country.

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 5 June 2024 01:04 (one week ago) link

Picking through piles of rubbish makes one think of Mumbai or something, but somehow the people don't give me an Indian vibe. Apart from the guy in the forefront, all the men seem to be wearing jeans...

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 5 June 2024 01:26 (one week ago) link

I think this is Kathmandu

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 5 June 2024 03:02 (one week ago) link

Going by triangular flags, climate and trash. But I can’t find it in streetview so maybe not. feels Himalayan though.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 5 June 2024 03:07 (one week ago) link

I was getting more of a feel of South America. The bricks above the blue yellow building above left, and occasional fragments of words

Tow Law City (cherry blossom), Wednesday, 5 June 2024 03:25 (one week ago) link

The green/white street sign is pretty distinctive!

Tow Law City (cherry blossom), Wednesday, 5 June 2024 04:27 (one week ago) link

Bogota has street signs that are on two lines like that

Tow Law City (cherry blossom), Wednesday, 5 June 2024 04:40 (one week ago) link

I get the vibe that the people are more Asian than South American, but I don't know what I'm going on there.

Looks a little like where I'll be next week (DRC, reinforced by the blue-yellow, too many bricks though)

Nabozo, Wednesday, 5 June 2024 05:42 (one week ago) link

very rough guess but there seems to be a sign in Kurdish ("Mezhe").

assert (matttkkkk), Wednesday, 5 June 2024 05:48 (one week ago) link

I thought I had it in the Maria Paz district, but second guessing now. The lighting is darker in the image

Tow Law City (cherry blossom), Wednesday, 5 June 2024 05:51 (one week ago) link

Its definitely Spanish speaking with the street name being Calle Csomething, and signs in that style appear to be common across Colombia though I noticed them more in Bogota. And the buildings on the left and words match

But on the other hand, there aren't many streets with trash like that or with that many people. Bogota's streetview surprisingly sparsely peopled. Maria Paz had people and trash. The building on the right is a problem. And the lighting isn't right, though I noticed the imagery is copyright 2019 and Bogota's coverage is more recent than that

I did wonder about Buenaventura on the coast, that seems to have trash and maybe port cities are a better bet

Tow Law City (cherry blossom), Wednesday, 5 June 2024 06:48 (one week ago) link

Having a punt that its Caracas.

Dan Worsley, Wednesday, 5 June 2024 07:38 (one week ago) link

I've just realised that this is not the most recently available street view, which is not really fair as the current view is very different

Reminds me of some streets I saw in Sal in Cape Verde.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Wednesday, 5 June 2024 11:47 (one week ago) link

OK, that's pretty dramatically different! I'm struck by the cars, which look like they're from the 1990s or something

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 5 June 2024 11:55 (one week ago) link

Ok not Himalayan. Agree with South America or maybe Haiti?

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 5 June 2024 12:08 (one week ago) link

Cali, Colombia? The painting of the green jeep is labeled "El Caleno."

jaymc, Wednesday, 5 June 2024 12:11 (one week ago) link

Or wait, maybe it is Bogota. The building in the first photo looks like La Casa de Pique in the Bronx slum, which was demolished a few years ago:

jaymc, Wednesday, 5 June 2024 12:43 (one week ago) link

Ah good! I was at the wrong end of town, about 7 miles further west, though would never have found it even if landed on same street though with the changes. Was going to look for churches this afternoon

Weird area, I did kept second guessing if it was Bogota or not, but the street sign design was too big a factor to look elsewhere

Tow Law City (cherry blossom), Wednesday, 5 June 2024 13:06 (one week ago) link

well done jaymc, and cherry blossom who did say Bogota last night too. If you turn the camera around 180 degrees, are those homeless people sleeping? I really hope so, because this is what I read about the Bronx:

This is me. It's October 1973 and I'm seven years old. My mom and I went on a several month long trip around Europe and somewhere on the road she took this picture. My gut feeling is that it's Trieste, Italy or perhaps Pula, Croatia. I have no idea, but I'll bet that wall is still there.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 6 June 2024 02:58 (one week ago) link

I say maybe, but that looks like exactly the same piece of wall to me.

nate woolls, Thursday, 6 June 2024 03:11 (one week ago) link

that makes total sense - we did eventually get to Greece (I had my 8th birthday in Athens)

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 6 June 2024 03:29 (one week ago) link

and bingo! thanks for spotting that - I found the spot at 4:28 into this video. There's more trees now and it looks like the walls of Palamidi Fortress have been given a good cleaning.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 6 June 2024 04:17 (one week ago) link

I broke into that fortress once! Interrailing round Europe with friends in 1993 we were staying in Nafplio, after visiting the town we planned to visit the fortress on the way back to our hostel, which was on the other side, but after climbing all the way up the hill we found the fortress was closed. So we climbed up a 12ft wall, walked through it and out the other side.
