My best friend is Ethiopian. I'll ask him about it. I'm guessing it is sort of technologically behind from the rest of the world. There isn't as many roads, etc.

I think if you're going this far you should go all the way and move to a country you've never even heard of

The United Nations Children's Fund is seeking 650 million dollars for sanitation in Ethiopia, where 35 million people are deprived of adequate hygiene, a UNICEF statement said Tuesday.

I went to an Ethiopian restaurant once, so if I decide to visit the country in July I will be well-placed to enjoy its many charms.

ten years pass...

Dramatic breakthrough in negotiations between #Ethiopia and #Eritrea to end conflict. Summit has yielded real results; will establish diplomatic relations, open trade. Could have welcome spill over effects in #SouthSudan and #Somalia. #Peace pic.twitter.com/Ugklo48KNu

Has anyone read anything reliable about what is going on with the attempted coup? I've read quite a bit and I'm still not at all clear on who is involved and what their motivations are

Fwiw the couple of articles I read on this (in French) stressed the scarcity of reliable information. Since a nation-wide Internet shutdown is reportedly in effect, we'll likely remain in the dark for a while longer as to the fomenters' exact motivations.

condensing down what I've been able to find:

the govt are saying the Amhara governor's assassination was organised by General Asaminew Tsige, Amhara's security chief, member of Ginbot 7, (the group who were behind the 2009 coup attempt), and one of the political prisoners released last year when Abiy Ahmed came to office and promised reform and change. a year ago he was publicly renouncing violence after being invited onto the central committee of the Amhara Democratic Party but more recently has been issuing calls to arms on facebook. apparently there's now a big military presence in Bahir Dar and lots of arrests have been made. seems like a big blow for Ahmed.

apparently Asaminew Tsige has been killed in a gun battle today
