Red Lobster: A Good Value or Ghetto?

Message Bookmarked

For some reason today, the subject of RED LOBSTER came up. One of my co-workers said that "Red Lobster is so ghetto." I never really thought of it like that, though after I thought about it the only time I'd ever eaten at a Red Lobster was with someone from the ghetto. Food was OK, nothing special. Thought of it as some sort of middle/lower-middle class kinda place where my parents never ever took us to eat.

Outback steakhouses are just embarassing. Whatever happened to Ponderosa?

Kim, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (eighteen years ago) link

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (eighteen years ago) link

I've noticed that my co-workers seem to think that Red Lobster is SUPER FANCY. They talk about it like it's some fancy A-list joint that you have to have connections to get into. Myself, I haven't been there since I was eleven, probably. I do remember those cheese roll thingies being sorta good.

BUGABOO CREEK is the epitome of embarrassing franchising. Talking moose heads?

Red Lobster is losing its hold on the Eastern seaboard, I think. Between TGIFriday's, Applebee's, Chili's, Hops, John Harvard's Brew House, Outback, Olive Garden, it's no wonder. Shit, where's the INDIAN chain restaurant?

Lobsters=crustaceans=the insects of the sea, right? so why do people eat them? I haven't eaten meat/fish/seafood since age 5 so I guess I don't understand. Though the red lobster commercials are fascinating.

We keep wanting to test out their all you can eat shrimp theory, right. I mean, is there a point where they'll cut you off? It's all you can eat, though. Can you just keep ordering it til you put Red Lobster under, or IS there a point where the waitress comes and says, listen, I'm sorry, but I don't care, that one right there is it. THAT is all you can eat, I'm sorry. What does all you can eat mean?

One time, Ramon drank the broth from the shrimp scampi cos we dared him to. That was wicked sick. Their drinks are weak but you can get the lobsterita which is really great, despite the nasty ass name, because it comes inexplicably with beads.

there is only one outback steakhouse here unfortunaletly bvecause i looked at their menu and it is so funny, there's shit named after every backwater town on the map - the food don't even match, plus they odn't have any kanga on their menu.

Red Lobster was considered a treat when I was a kid. Not ghetto or at all. Or maybe we were ghetto, and the Lobster Ghetto was a step up?

Are there any good seafood chains? Pappadeaux is quality, but that's Cajun food. Joe's Crab Shack is kinda bleh. I liked Landry's, but the one in town got replaced by a Crab Shack.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 27 July 2003 04:18 (seventeen years ago) link

The Joe's Crab Shack in New Orleans is great, but a) it's the only one I've been to, and b) it's hard to find bad seafood in New Orleans, cause it's fresh nearly year-round. (That said -- JCS has the best crab in the city, period. I can't even think of a close second-place.)

But my experience has been that the seafood chains are only good in areas where fish etc. are available locally -- the Red Lobster where I grew up is no good at all, and that's about an hour and a half inland, I'd guess.

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 27 July 2003 04:35 (seventeen years ago) link

i live a couple blocks from a seafood market ... their logo is "enjoy that fresh fish flavor!" you can just imagine the smells during the hot summertime (and i can imagine what mr. perry would have to say about the logo ...)

I can't believe I've seen the commercials for Red Lobster so many times in my life (though not recently) and yet I've never been. I have, on the other hand, patronized the Olive Garden on two occasions.

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 27 July 2003 04:58 (seventeen years ago) link

The Olive Garden is just evil. It's hard to find a good seafood restaurant, period (inland) - but in every town of 50,000+, there's at least one decent Italian restaurant, maybe two.

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 27 July 2003 05:03 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm not sure how a restaurant could make it worse for their employees than endless salads and breadsticks for prices any group of teenagers living large could afford.

Walking across hot coals to get to the table, maybe.

Red Lobster being owned by a crybaby bitch who will deliberately cut back on employees' hours to make sure they don't have to pay health coverage to the very people handling your food:

http://www.wjla.com/articles/2012/10/olive-garden-red-lobster-putting-more-workers-on-part-time-because-of-obama-health-care-law-80832.html

Servers at Red Lobster now handle four tables at a time, instead of three. And last year, the company also put workers on a "tip sharing" program, meaning waiters and waitresses share their tips with other employees such as busboys and bartenders.

That allows Darden to pay more workers a far lower "tip credit wage" of $2.13, rather than the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour.

Starting next year, the company will change the way it offers health insurance to full-time employees, to keep costs more predictable. Instead of offering one insurance plan for all 45,000 employees, it will give workers a contribution toward buying coverage and then send them to an online health insurance exchange where they can chose from five medical, four dental and three vision plans.
