When your life is seriously badly written...

This weekend I spent some time with some old friends in a college town a few hours away. I was hanging out with art school kids who made me wish I had gone to art school for film instead of straight up film school, meeting tons of new people, having interesting discussions, etc.

Much of this took place at a cafe where most of them work, and I was getting free delicious food and drinks left and right, doing crosswords and generally having not a care in the world. The name of this cafe?

Cafe Paradiso.

C'mon, guys. That's sitcom level shit.

So this is the thread for rebuking the infinite monkeys with their typewriters for their narrative laziness.

I have nobody to blame for the overlong expository garbage and overuse of worn-out tropes lately but myself

Tonight I'm going out to see my pals the Fake Accents open for Psychedelic Horseshit in some seriously bad weather at the Velvet Lounge, that's all pretty decent as far as a set-up. We'll see what happens though. I've learned not to trust the trailers.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 19:58 (sixteen years ago) link

that took me a second to figure out.

i meant get on a plane and GO to the SHOW

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 20:02 (sixteen years ago) link

En, that is really bittersweet.

So I went to the show and the bands that played were pretty great, esp having driven all the way from Athens just to play to a very cold room with about 12 people in it, one of whom was a kind of cute girl who works for the EPA but I only talked to her for like 2 minutes and was too chicken to get her # plus she & her friends left early. I bought a shot for one of the dudes in the band(s), explained to the lead singer of PH that the drug preferences of their drummer may indicate that he is bipolar or has a clinical anxiety problem, had some of that new Anheuser Busch bourbon-barrel-aged winter brew and went to bed relatively early because standing around being cold is tiring.

the FA's kind of bitched out, only 1/4 of them showed up :((

The only thing about all this is that if I could get laid it would totally be A Heartbreaking Work Of Staggering Genius hipster memoir material. Of course that's still horrible writing, if you ask me.

i wld not watch that show about the cafe and the arts students ever

rrrobyn, Thursday, 6 December 2007 18:31 (sixteen years ago) link

im curious as to what drug prefs led you to that diagnosis

jhøshea, Thursday, 6 December 2007 18:33 (sixteen years ago) link

xp hah, I thought the same thing when I was trying to figure out this thread

dan m, Thursday, 6 December 2007 18:34 (sixteen years ago) link

i wld watch one about film students who drop out and join the secret special forces and the whole thing is filmed in crazy vision

rrrobyn, Thursday, 6 December 2007 18:35 (sixteen years ago) link

xanax, klonopin & yayo

El Tomboto, Thursday, 6 December 2007 18:46 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't think Nick was saying that the cafe should be the site of a sitcom, merely that the irony of the cafe where he felt like he was in paradise being called Cafe Paradiso was perfect enough to have seemed scripted in a sitcom-ish way.

jaymc, Thursday, 6 December 2007 18:49 (sixteen years ago) link

how is that ironic?

Mr. Que, Thursday, 6 December 2007 18:57 (sixteen years ago) link

I understood what he was saying, I still wouldn't watch the show.

dan m, Thursday, 6 December 2007 18:58 (sixteen years ago) link

is it ironic if i say 'thank you jaymc for explaining things to me!' or is it just sarcastic

rrrobyn, Thursday, 6 December 2007 19:02 (sixteen years ago) link

Sarcastic, I think. Whatever, I'll shut up. How am I supposed to know these things? I mean, I wouldn't watch the show, either, but that's kind of a moot point because nobody suggested such a show.

jaymc, Thursday, 6 December 2007 19:05 (sixteen years ago) link

how is that ironic?

OK, serendipitous?

jaymc, Thursday, 6 December 2007 19:06 (sixteen years ago) link

okay, that's cool. or coincidence. sorry i'll stop hatin. for the record i would not watch that show, or any show for that matter, that took place in a coffee shop

Mr. Que, Thursday, 6 December 2007 19:07 (sixteen years ago) link

what if it was a coffee shop CRIMELAB

El Tomboto, Thursday, 6 December 2007 19:08 (sixteen years ago) link

What do art students know about forensic science?

dan m, Thursday, 6 December 2007 19:10 (sixteen years ago) link

That'll be the tagline.

jaymc, Thursday, 6 December 2007 19:12 (sixteen years ago) link

what if it was a coffee shop CRIMELAB

if bruce willis was in it, then ok you got me

Mr. Que, Thursday, 6 December 2007 19:17 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm all about a crime/medical procedural with art students.

"THIS WEEK: Lara's Performance 426 final goes terribly wrong when she finds the dog she's brought in to vomit on cue is hiding a deadly secret..."

en i see kay, Thursday, 6 December 2007 23:16 (sixteen years ago) link

also

i wld watch one about film students who drop out and join the secret special forces and the whole thing is filmed in crazy vision

Is this a hint and if so are you asking me to make it or to LIVE IT? Because I dunno if the secret special forces really care if I know how to use a 16mm camera made in the 40's.

en i see kay, Thursday, 6 December 2007 23:19 (sixteen years ago) link

I feel like they only got 12 episodes taped and we don't know if/when we'll be able to make the next batch plus understandable ratings slump.

blueski, Thursday, 6 December 2007 23:40 (sixteen years ago) link

both literally and figuratively the fucking writer's strike leaves me hanging 2/3 of the way through a terrible character arc and just plain dangling at some precipitous point

my delta flight from new york to chicago got cancelled this morning, causing me to miss my united flight from chicago back to honolulu. the flight is done by united but sold through aloha airlines. united keeps telling me that they cant help me, that i have to call aloha, and aloha tells me the opposite. i keep getting bounced back and forth between their customer service numbers, eating up my cell phone minutes.

at one time while on hold with aloha, the hold-music was a contemporary hawaiian group singing a song with a chorus that went something like "i'm just stuck in limbo... just stuck in limbo"

My manager gave my a gift card to (of all LOL places) Kmart. I called to check the balance and was told by a friendly robot that the card had expired. My manager and I are not on haha jokey terms. Feels like something off The Office.
