I gotta tell you: it was great. And there's more left for later! It was warm when I bought it.

I think Devon Market is a field trip-worthy place -- they have crazy liquors from all over the world, like Macedonian brandy and all kinds of stuff. Plus the Bosnian bakery.

Devon Market + Devon Ave + Romanian Kosher sausage store = full day of northside culinary funzone.

La Lechera, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:03 (sixteen years ago) link

Romanian sausage co. mmmmmmggmggrrrrggm

Jordan, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:05 (sixteen years ago) link

Is that the same area with all the Indian restaurants?

KitCat, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:06 (sixteen years ago) link

Yes, Mr. Que.

I've only been to Devon Market once. For some reason, I thought you were talking about Patel Bros. at first.

jaymc, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:07 (sixteen years ago) link

xp to Sarah - Yup.

La Lechera, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:07 (sixteen years ago) link

i don't think you have to salt eggplants anymore, since that was to draw out the bitterness, and they've bred it out of most you can buy in the last 10 years or something.

hmm, that ratatouille looks good, and just like it did in the movie. i wonder if you could use butternut squash instead of yellow squash. if so, we'd have basically all the ingredients in anyway.

colette, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:07 (sixteen years ago) link

I work 2 or 3 shifts. So around 11-15 hours

Jesse, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:08 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh man I am totally putting in a meat order with Kid for this weekend, he lives down the block.

Jordan, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:08 (sixteen years ago) link

xpost No, Devon Market is by Loyola. Did you ever go to Ben and Rachel's place when they lived up in Rogers Park on Greenview? It's like right around the corner from there.

jaymc, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:08 (sixteen years ago) link

Wait, now I'm confused.

jaymc, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:08 (sixteen years ago) link

Well, it's on Devon.
That's basically the same area. Comparatively speaking.

La Lechera, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:10 (sixteen years ago) link

For someone who is coming all the way from Wicker Park, I would consider it basically the same area. It's like 20 min. walk or 4 minute drive away, depending on traffic. Devon/Western vs. Devon/Greenview.

La Lechera, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:10 (sixteen years ago) link

Sausage Co. is at Touhy and Clark.

La Lechera, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:11 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, that's true, A.

jaymc, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:12 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm out for the day, Chicago. Wish me luck in class! I will learn about color management. YAY COLOR MANAGEMENT! (I'm maintaining a positive attitude, wouldn't you say?)

kenan, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:15 (sixteen years ago) link

People: tomorrow is Thursday. I propose the Plymouth Restaurant and Bar, on Plymouth Ct. near the library.

Ooh, rooftop. I'm in.

jaymc, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:19 (sixteen years ago) link

Did you know you could bookmark all your tabs at once? I just did that by accident.

KitCat, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:20 (sixteen years ago) link

I can't -- I have dance class! At Old Town. Week 3 of 8. Should have taken tap but took Irish step instead because I enjoy hopping energetically. Have found that hopping that energetically is a little beyond me at 9:45pm on a schoolnite. It would be MUCH better if I got to wear an outfit like Laurel's.

La Lechera, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:21 (sixteen years ago) link

AMANDA AWESOME!!! Let's have a sleepover and trade steps -- have you got hard shoes yet or does that come later??

Laurel, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:22 (sixteen years ago) link

You get to wear better ones, you know -- and giant spiral-curled hairpieces.

Laurel, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:22 (sixteen years ago) link

Well, I am in level 1, so we can wear whatever shoes we want, but I have been wearing tap character shoes (that I have been saving for an occasion just like this), which makes me feel good about my legs but makes me feet hurt.

Bring on the hairpieces, the get-ups and the shoes. BRING IT ON.

La Lechera, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:24 (sixteen years ago) link

I know a jig and a reel and something else I forgot the name of. It's only week 3.

Laurel, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:24 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't think I'm ready for competition just yet...

La Lechera, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Irish hard shoes are great, I'm so jealous. They have flattened toes so you can balance on them for a second and they make big sounds.

Laurel, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh yeah, my teacher has those and she makes wonderful sounds. They're sort of like ballet shoes + taps + jazz shoes all together. It's fun wearing my little tap shoes, though. Makin' noise.

La Lechera, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:27 (sixteen years ago) link

i mean pointe ballet shoes, not regular ones.

Of particular interest to science/Greek nerds:

I'm reading about this physicist, Ralph Alpher, who just died. Apparently, he was the first person to theorize the big-bang but he was never recognized for his work because the paper he wrote had two co-authors much more famous than he, and people assumed that they did all the work. One was his advisor, George Gamow, but the other was a friend of Gamow's named Hans Bethe who had nothing to do with the paper but whose name was attached for the sake of a joke: Alpher, Bethe, and Gamow.

tee hee

KitCat, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:30 (sixteen years ago) link

The photo in the NYT obit makes him look like he still might have been mad about that joke 50 years later.

dan m, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:40 (sixteen years ago) link

I went to read the obit & got wrapped up in the story about female genital mutilation. ugh.

sweet tater, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:41 (sixteen years ago) link

oh rite

Jordan, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:41 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't know if the obit is still online. It's from last month.

jaymc, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:47 (sixteen years ago) link

it's okay. reading about the 13 year old who died as a result of genital mutilation is enough for me for now.

sweet tater, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:49 (sixteen years ago) link

Hey Jordan, I have some Jew News for ya:
I made matzo ball soup this week!

sweet tater, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 21:07 (sixteen years ago) link

Ooh, I love that stuff. Mostly the ballz. How did it come out?

Jordan, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 21:30 (sixteen years ago) link

sweet tater, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 21:34 (sixteen years ago) link

mmmmm pollution

the shadows fall away from the lake so that's sunrise, i'm guessing that's early morning fog from the lake rather than pollution.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 23:02 (sixteen years ago) link

I read those posts too quickly:

Addressing various posts throughout today:

My birthday, I am planning nothing for it, nor do I really want to. I take the La Lechera stance on my own birthday.

Kenan, that Derek Baily is one of my favorite study/reading albums.

Jesse, I should sell you my bike. I have major bike guilt for neglecting it for so long.

Really great fucking album that I'm listening to right now that I haven't heard in a long time: RJD2 - Deadringer.

Jeff, Thursday, 20 September 2007 00:18 (sixteen years ago) link

Ah yes, Dr. Kevin, but wouldn't the wind be blowing from the west, moving the fog back out over the lake? HMMMMM?

Truth be told, when driving to and from work I've seen more fog than smog, especially in the morning.

dan m, Thursday, 20 September 2007 01:31 (sixteen years ago) link

I will buy your bike.

I am tired.

Did you hear about the drive-by shooting in front of T's? Apparently it was a few days ago--someone in a moving car shot at a parked car, and someone in the parked car returned fire.

Roving Scandanavian lesbian gangs??

Jesse, Thursday, 20 September 2007 05:47 (sixteen years ago) link

OK, so I've turned into this big Regina Spektor fan in the course of the past hour.
