Mark Cuban has learned nothing from the history of the USFL/XFL

Or so I'd say. This was the part that made me arch my eyebrows:

The proposal was first disclosed by The New York Times on its Web site, which said it was the idea of Bill Hambrecht, a Wall Street investor who was a minority partner in the Oakland Invaders of the USFL, which played in the spring from 1983-85.

Mentally substitute an 'and' for the slash, then. (I should have added the World Football League acronym and then an etc.)

I think this is a very good idea.

I dunno. There would be ups and downs to that kind of system. It seems like major league teams are CONSTANTLY collapsing over here. Maybe the NHL is a bad example, but even there, it always seems like a quarter of the teams are on the verge of moving to another city. If these teams got "relegated," would they not die completely?

Will M., Thursday, 31 May 2007 19:47 (sixteen years ago) link

This has been tried, and failed spectacularly each time, except the AFL. But that was long before the NFL became what it is-and the AFL-NFL merger is actually why it is the behemoth it is today. It led to the national TV deal and it was all downhill from there. Cuban should worry about his pussy-ass underacheiving basketball team.

By this, I mean a new football league, not the relegation thing.

Bill Magill, Thursday, 31 May 2007 21:22 (sixteen years ago) link

And Will M, maybe some of the teams actually deserve to die. You use the example of the NHL, which expanded when it clearly shouldn't have. Now it ranks somewhere below bass fishing on the American sports agenda.

The USFL got off to a decent start it's first season, but then they tried to go to a fall schedule and it was over. They also went for too many clubs and then added more after the first year. There was quite a few great players, a couple of coaches that got head coaching jobs out of their experience in the USFL, including Jim Mora, whose Michigan Panthers won the first championship. Three future NFL hall of Famers played in the USFL, those being Jim Kelly, Steve Young and Reggie White. Herschel Walker was definitely a hall of fame caliber player, especially if you add those USFL yards into his career total.

ESPN had the broadcast contract for the USFL when it started and they showed bunches of the games. I watched quite a few games including their first championship game and remember it being pretty good. The first USFL championship game was pretty popular.

I think the USFL could have made it if they would have kept the league lean on teams and kept playing the spring, but they made the big jump against the NFL and it was done.

I think the USFL might be a secondary reason there are now 32 NFL clubs these days. I think even though it didn't succeed, it shook up the NFL labor structure pretty big in the 80s leading eventually to more open free agency, which along with their TV structure and salary cap has kept the league so competitive top to bottom.

All this being said, I think this new league is a completely dorky idea. I think these gazillionares would be smarter to try to petition to get into the NFL, which could probably support a couple of more clubs.

Three words: MILLION DOLLAR GAME

I think if the NFL is going to expand anywhere, it's internationally. That might be a pipe dream on their part, but they played a regular season game in Mexico last year, and are doing one in London this year. It's really popular in Mexico, especially the Raiders and the Cowboys. And the game in London sold out in a matter of minutes. It may just be the novelty factor, however.

The NBA has been talking about expanding internationally for years now, and it hasn't happened. The countries in which basketball is popular (Greece, Croatia, Spain, Italy, among others) already have established leagues, so it will probably not happen.

Bill Magill, Friday, 1 June 2007 13:58 (sixteen years ago) link

If the NFL could see its way to expanding into int'l territory that isn't already wealthy per se and try to create farm leagues to establish local talent, I think it could probably do really well on pretty much any continent in the globe. Anywhere that people like to drink and eat junk food in front of a big teevee, anyway.

TOMBOT, Friday, 1 June 2007 14:02 (sixteen years ago) link

They've already tried to do this with the World League, which I think is called NFL Europa or something like that. They set aside a number of roster spots for the local talent. I think a German or Dutch guy made it to the NFL a couple years ago, I'm not sure.
