there's a lot missing! Like, every role between Pluto Nash and The Departed - and he's been terrific in most of'em.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 11 May 2007 16:32 (sixteen years ago) link

I've got two ears and a heart, don't I?

kenan, Friday, 11 May 2007 16:32 (sixteen years ago) link

What's my name? Fuck you, that's my name.

Red October

dan selzer, Friday, 11 May 2007 16:33 (sixteen years ago) link

otm, not just because it's him in his best light but because of the extent to which it may be against type

gabbneb, Friday, 11 May 2007 16:34 (sixteen years ago) link

he pretty much kills in pearl harbor too

jhøshea, Friday, 11 May 2007 16:36 (sixteen years ago) link

i considered including pearl harbor but i never saw it

and what, Friday, 11 May 2007 16:37 (sixteen years ago) link

though he didn't really have a type then, in fact, between Beetlejuice and Red October, which were his two star-making roles in my memory, he comes accross as a bit of a wimp.

dan selzer, Friday, 11 May 2007 16:37 (sixteen years ago) link

skinny Alec Baldwin looks kind of wrong now.

horseshoe, Friday, 11 May 2007 16:38 (sixteen years ago) link

and what, have i mentioned i've performed the malice speech live on stage before

s1ocki, Friday, 11 May 2007 16:39 (sixteen years ago) link

i still have it memorized

s1ocki, Friday, 11 May 2007 16:39 (sixteen years ago) link

But if you're looking for God, he was in operating room number two on November 17th, and he doesn't like to be second guessed.

this was my favourite line to do

s1ocki, Friday, 11 May 2007 16:40 (sixteen years ago) link

xposthow do you do it with a straight face? i was just thinking about that, how it would be fun to memorize, but I'd never be able to pull it off.

Mr. Que, Friday, 11 May 2007 16:40 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah i did

s1ocki, Friday, 11 May 2007 16:40 (sixteen years ago) link

hahahaha s1ocki you rule!

Tracer Hand, Friday, 11 May 2007 16:41 (sixteen years ago) link

actually the full line was the best to deliver:

"Now, you go ahead and read your Bible, Dennis, and you go to your church, and, with any luck, you might win the annual raffle, but if you're looking for God, he was in operating room number two on November 17, and he doesn't like to be second guessed."

gotta hit that "dennis"

s1ocki, Friday, 11 May 2007 16:41 (sixteen years ago) link

guys I haven't seen this movie, is "and I am never, ever sick at sea" a huge non sequitor or not?

horseshoe, Friday, 11 May 2007 16:41 (sixteen years ago) link

no, it's a metaphor

s1ocki, Friday, 11 May 2007 16:42 (sixteen years ago) link

at least in my approach ot the role

s1ocki, Friday, 11 May 2007 16:42 (sixteen years ago) link

ha!

horseshoe, Friday, 11 May 2007 16:42 (sixteen years ago) link

His character is funny in State & Main, but I remember him playing it a little straight?

Jordan, Friday, 11 May 2007 17:31 (sixteen years ago) link

I really don't see how anything besides Glengarry Glen Ross can win this.

His first appearances on SNL

kingfish, Friday, 11 May 2007 17:47 (sixteen years ago) link

his GGR character/dialogue are great, but honestly I don't think he got really good at doing that kind of performance until later on, if you compare it to, say, The Departed.

I might have to vote for SNL, too. If for nothing else than that season's greetings sketch. "All you can do is trust in God, or, if you prefer, voodoo."

'how about that sports team we both root for? they should fire or rehire that manager of theirs... he's a character!'

and what, Friday, 11 May 2007 17:53 (sixteen years ago) link

He was pretty good in The Aviator too.

o. nate, Friday, 11 May 2007 18:45 (sixteen years ago) link

My vote for Miami Blues would be in proxy for Jennifer Jason Leigh so it was probably smart to leave that off the list.

zaxxon25, Friday, 11 May 2007 18:53 (sixteen years ago) link

I guess I'll have to vote for "30 Rock" since I don't remember his character in GGR.

o. nate, Friday, 11 May 2007 18:56 (sixteen years ago) link

Get them to SIGN on the LINE which is DOTTED

Joe, Friday, 11 May 2007 20:00 (sixteen years ago) link

Alec Baldwin playing hot, lithe person of conscience = DUD
Alec Baldwin playing swarthy, porcine assholes = CLASSIC

One other huge advantage: the man is a fucking OTTER.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 11 May 2007 20:11 (sixteen years ago) link

wait wait back up, explain your otter theory.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Friday, 11 May 2007 20:23 (sixteen years ago) link

I believe he's referring to AB's hirsuteness.

David R., Friday, 11 May 2007 20:24 (sixteen years ago) link

oh well that's boring.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Friday, 11 May 2007 20:25 (sixteen years ago) link

He was brilliant in Along Came Polly. The bathroom scene with Stiller is one of the funniest I've ever seen.

I think Lymelife--admittedly a lesser Ice Storm--is a good, underseen film.

clemenza, Sunday, 2 May 2021 15:50 (two years ago) link

I finally saw Miami Blues for the first time this year, and I didn’t know he played one of the most entertaining types of characters: a chaos agent who does everything for inscrutably dumb reasons.
