I'd like to like this show, but it just doesn't work for me most of the time. The cameos get a laugh for sheer WTFery, and I like the creepy androgynous newscasters.

You know what show is REALLY bewildering in that is-it-terrible-or-entertaining way? XAVIER.
― nickalicious, Sunday, 30 December 2007 19:09 (sixteen years ago) link
Yeah, seriously.
It's like Mr. Show but with a more singular absurdity.

Has anyone heard the soundtrack, Awesome Record, Great Songs?
IT IS AWESOME. I will summarize the first track:
[40 seconds of music similar to the menu screen from an EA sports game in 1994. Or maybe Smash TV, I can't remember] [25 seconds of wicked 8th grade drum solo] "SPORTS! SPORTS! SPORTS! SPORTS! SPORTS" End.
Check it out, it's necessary.

where is chaki in the salame episode?
― iiiijjjj, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 01:11 (fifteen years ago) link
R.I.P. chaki
"Doo Dah Doo Doo" stands up pretty well without the visuals. "have a glass of wine...it's ok kids, I won't tell."
"Time Travel" through "Petite Feet" is the most economic use of 4 minutes I've heard all year. Great job!

Dammit, I already blew my wad. Now I can't even mention "Hamburgers and Hotdogs"!

Oh, no. I had no idea about this. Everyone is going to hate me even more now that all of the annoying songs are collected on one compact disc.

hmm, well that's one.
i am still really surprised to see such (near) universal acclaim for something that is half-the-time hilarious and half-the-time fucking wretched.

oh god i heard "sports!" out somewhere and it kind of blew my mind
― sleep, Friday, 20 June 2008 19:02 (fifteen years ago) link
I'm kind of surprised to see any acclaim for this at all. It's perfectly formulated for my sense of humor, but it seems like the sort of thing that maybe three people in the world would actually enjoy. I honestly can't imagine recommending it to anyone.
― Deric W. Haircare, Friday, 20 June 2008 19:47 (fifteen years ago) link
This is sort of correct. But shit, the half the time that it's working makes me lol harder than anything else on tv, except maybe for Mr. Show.

I wish that the one scene that had burned itself into my head wasn't the monumentally unfunny hacky sack one because there is some great stuff, I can only ever just rmeember that fucking hacky sack unfunny shit though.

Yeah, but right after the hacky sack scene is the part where the loser of the tournament goes

Yeah, the coda of the Hackysack scene, with C-Boy walking depressed through the surf, is amazing!
I could use less of the "bloody balls" and shit-type jokes I guess, but I'll take them if they come with the incredible awkward miscommunication/ hallucinatory cable access stuff.

Eric Wareheim recently directed this video for Flying Lotus's track 'Parisian Goldfish'. The results are undeniably in keeping with T&EASGJ's humour stylings, and definitely not safe for work (or possibly for viewing anywhere, ever).
It's the best thing I've seen in months.

lyrics are very DO YOU SEE? like, can someone really even ever *own* land, maaaan?
I'm glad he's having fun but frankly I have more fun when his songs are about drinking your own piss
― the burrito that defined a generation, Friday, 9 October 2020 15:31 (three years ago) link
His lyrics are so unwaveringly matter of fact that when he started making non-comedy music I think almost everyone was looking for his trademark drydecker parody underneath it somewhere. And part of it is the production as Hadrian said. The upfront vocals somewhat resemble how his comedy songs are mixed in Awesome show etc. So combined with the commonplace lyrics there's nothing transcendent. Just straightforward song arrangements and subject matter with a plain-speaking approach.

it's more of a slow-burn low-key character-driven thing like Baskets, but the characters just aren't there. Tim's xian father-of-12 guy was decent, and I think the only time I laughed was when he had his face stomped on by the interim 4th crew member after he tried to consummate their unspoken relationship after praying on it, but John was just John and Fred kinda bugs. I finished it last night and was mostly bored, but ymmv depending on how much you like dehydrated food jokes. It was nice to see Alia Shawkat get some work.
