Elephants -- not as cute and friendly as all that

So this NY Times story has been getting general attention but I admit I'd NEVER thought I'd see this statement in any story, anywhere, ever:

Since the early 1990’s, for example, young male elephants in Pilanesberg National Park and the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve in South Africa have been raping and killing rhinoceroses; this abnormal behavior, according to a 2001 study in the journal Pachyderm, has been reported in ‘‘a number of reserves’’ in the region.

poor rhinos! this makes me really really sad.

I saw a blurry long distance photo of an elephant mounting a rhino while back. Crazy stuff.

I read that a lot of this was down to the elephants having had bad childhoods.

There ought to be a law against this.

Elephants have really bad eyesight, it's an easy mistake to make.

I thought it was rhinos who had really bad eyesight?

Rhinos have poor eyesight too. As do hippos. Anything fat and grey really...

That building does have all the characteristics of an elephant, tho: elephants are well known to have 32 floors and to be 102 meters (335ft.) high.

Things cane be hideous and amazing at the same time you know.

Nathalie I am extrememly impressed by your knitting skills. That looks very complicated. Beautiful.

It isn't something for beginners of course, but it isn't as complex as it looks. :-) It's a craft: the more you practice, the easier it gets. Thank you though. :-)

Nathalie (stevienixed), Thursday, 19 May 2011 14:45 (twelve years ago) link

Stop with the modesty, nath, you are a genius at stranded knitting and those elephants are adorbs.

Col. Pinkney Lugenbeel (Abbbottt), Thursday, 19 May 2011 14:50 (twelve years ago) link

Thanks. :-) I am not genius enough to cut it though. ARGH STEEKING. :-)

If it had done the the same to David Attenborough I'd be commending the elephant, but that seems very harsh.
