I don't like this thread.

BUT.

I'm having dinner with my mom at Marigold (new Indian restaurant) tonight. I'm in a pickle because it was her birthday a couple weeks ago and so I was planning on paying for dinner, even though she usually pays. But then this morning I was thinking about it and realized I don't really have that kind of money to spend, because she'll want to get wine and dessert, and it'll be at least $50. So I said, maybe I'll just get her an iTunes gift certificate instead.

Cool, right? So then she calls me this morning and leaves me a voicemail (I was on the train) that says, "Are we still on for tonight? I don't have any ideas about where to go, so I'll let you decide, since you're treating me." And I was like wha? Did I accidentally tell her that I had been planning on treating her? I don't know why I would've done that, since my plan all along was to surprise her by picking up the check when it arrived. So now I don't know whether I'm obligated to pay for it or not. I'm hoping maybe I just misunderstood what she said on the voice mail. I already bought the gift certificate, anyway.

Chris, I totally would, but after the last few years of just spending money willy-nilly and never balancing my checkbook, I've been evaluating my finances lately and noticing a rapid decline in my savings. So I'm probably being a little more assiduous than usual lately about not spending too much money.

2. My graduation from law school is May 20, 2007. There are no tickets, so if you want to suffer through the ceremony, come on along. I am also having some sort of party, hopefully planned by someone who isn't me. So save the date, because after that, you won't see my ass until the beginning of August, after I take the bar.

I agree with Jenny agreeing with me. You don't save money by not being generous to your mom (or your friends or other loved ones), you do it by cutting back on moneys you spend on yourself. Only be cheap to mom if it means you won't make rent.

Whatever, dudes. I gave my mom the gift certificate, and then when the check came, she was all, "Let me get this one. I know you talked about paying, but you already gave me a present, and this is a lot more money to you than it is to me." I sheepishly said that I'd been worrying about it, in fact, and she gave me a pitying look and said, "Oh no no, you shouldn't worry about it, it's really nothing." She was very happy with the gift certificate.

The food, btw, was delicious. Nick did not serve us, though. Some kooky middle-aged ditz was our waitress. She grinned maniacally and said things like, "Ohhhh, isn't it gooooood?" and "You guys are so funny!!" -- even though we hadn't said anything. Then she did a "Psst, see those two ladies over there? One of them ate all of her lamb vindaloo! I don't know she did it, it's really spicy!!"

I just finished the newer Peter Carey novel, Theft, which was really good. I think I need to read a bunch of his other books, since Illywhacker was good too.

John, I can't believe you've never spent more than $65 on a gift!? Of course, I'm no model for good budgeting seeing as how I'm tens of thousands of dollars in debt. The pastor we'll probably pick for our ceremony suggested that if either of us has any debt, we should try as hard as we can to pay it off before we get married. If I listened to him, I probably wouldn't be able to get married for another 20 years.

When would I have ever done this? I mean, I think last Christmas my brother and I spent somewhere in that range, probably a little bit more, on each parent, but that was split between the two of us. Unevenly, since he's a student, but still.

I'm still feeling weird and guilty about the whole thing, especially because of some of the responses I got on this thread. And then Kr said something about how she would've paid for the dinner because she feels like she owes her parents for helping to put her through college. And I was just like, "Huh. That's never occurred to me." I mean, obviously I'm grateful that they did, and I know that not all people are so lucky, but I've never considered that I was forever in their debt or anything -- they've certainly never made me feel that way.

Did I mention my mom makes like four times as much as I do?
