CBS ANNOUNCES 20 NEW CASTAWAYS FOR "SURVIVOR: COOK ISLANDS"

Twenty New Castaways Set To Compete When The 13th Installment Of The Hit Television Series Premieres on Thursday, Sept. 14

Ethnically Diverse Cast To Initially Be Organized Into Four Tribes Divided Along Ethnic Lines

CBS today announced the 20 new castaways who will compete in SURVIVOR: COOK ISLANDS when the 13th installment of the Emmy Award-winning series premieres Thursday, Sept. 14 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

SURVIVOR: COOK ISLANDS will feature the series' most ethnically diverse cast to date. The castaways will initially be organized into four tribes divided along ethnic lines (African-American, Asian-American, Hispanic and White) before merging in a later episode.

In addition, throughout the series, at least one castaway each episode will be banished to a separate island (Exile Island) miles away from camp. While being separated from the tribe is not desirable, the castaways will learn that there is a hidden Immunity Idol somewhere on Exile Island. If found, this Immunity Idol could save an individual from being voted out at a future Tribal Council.

The 13th Installment

13TH?!?!

Seriously, the time, where did it go, etc.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 21:31 (seventeen years ago) link

i know! i feel old. oh, and white, right, that.

i'm sure more than one of the players is going to be rolling their eyes when they get divided into teams and see what the producers have done.

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 21:35 (seventeen years ago) link

survivor did NOT start in 1993.

SURVIVOR RAHOWA

PARTYMAN (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 21:40 (seventeen years ago) link

haha

but no, it didn't start in 93! it started in, like, 98. tv seasons are weird. they have no regard for calendar years. Parallel universe stuff.

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 21:52 (seventeen years ago) link

and to think I've never seen one episode of this shit. Better late than never ah well.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 22:27 (seventeen years ago) link

they've always done two seasons per year, approximately.

I must admit that instigating a race war is pretty fucking ballsy sounding.

don weiner (don weiner), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 23:08 (seventeen years ago) link

Survivor started in the summer of 2000, and has done at least two seasons per year, yah. And they're all great!!! (Well, not All-Stars, and there have been some mediocre ones including Guatemala, and much of Vanuatu and Thailand.) In any case, color me excited!

Organisers said they were addressing complaints that previous series had not been sufficiently ethnically diverse.

"So we said, 'Let's turn this criticism into creativity,'" host Jeff Probst told CBS's Early Show.

"It fits in perfectly with what Survivor does. It is a social experiment."

"i'm sure more than one of the players is going to be rolling their eyes when they get divided into teams and see what the producers have done."

They RECRUITED most of the non-white players. They travelled around and actively sought out people who would be good on the show. Apparently, they get so few minority auditions that this was the only way to find people for teams. Or people who they thought would be good on t.v. anyway. also, i heard that they found one person via myspace(!!).

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 24 August 2006 22:40 (seventeen years ago) link

I usually love Survivor and have often downloaded the application to apply to be a contestant, so color me too. *ducks*

This is bound to be one of those shows where people get angry and insulted along the way but everyone ends up learning valuable lessons about each other and loses some preconceived notions, blah blah blah.

This is surely going to be good for some cringing.

maria otm - 'we fought and said some reprehensible and cringeworthy things but boy did we learn about ourselves and are better people for it' haha, but y'know, it's kinda the truth. and that's what interests me about this show (yet i have no interest in big brother? something different going on there, i don't know. i like the basicness of survivor. or what was the basicness.) oh, the world...

i hope the whole season is the korean guy picking on the japanese guy and the japanese guy picking on the chinese woman. (i didn't actually look at the names above, so i have no idea if this will be accurate.) it would funny to see the racism/nationalism within the same supposed "race" group. it might dispel some of the ideas people have that "asian" is some sort of all-purpose designation.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 24 August 2006 23:26 (seventeen years ago) link

yes! or 'hispanic' for that freakin matter. well, or any of these designations.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 24 August 2006 23:49 (seventeen years ago) link

They RECRUITED most of the non-white players.

This has been a trend on Survivor generally for all players, though. Many die-hard Survivor fans have been grumbling for a couple years now over the increasing tendency to cast recruited "model" types over interesting personalities with interesting backgrounds. Exile Island swung back to the wacky personality casting, and it was a better show for it, even though it really started to degenerate in terms of repetition.

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Friday, 25 August 2006 15:33 (seventeen years ago) link

So do you have to be a purebreed to be on the show?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 25 August 2006 15:40 (seventeen years ago) link

The only way this could be entertaining would be if the white-people camp built weapons and then marched into the black and Latino camps and took all their stuff and then made them do all the work required to transport it to the Asian camp and trade it for tea and spices.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 25 August 2006 15:47 (seventeen years ago) link

I mean, if you're gonna do this, go all the way, people! Mix it up! Come out one day and be all: "Whichever team wins this challenge gets to enslave one member of any other team of their choosing!"

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 25 August 2006 16:19 (seventeen years ago) link

three weeks pass...
I didn't get to watch this last night, but I wonder how much planning went into the casting of this, like did they measure out iq & physical strength factors somehow in advance to try and make all the teams equal? I mean, if you're going to make it a race war, what responsibilities do you have not to stack the deck for a certain race/team and what standards do you use to ensure that? Did they embrace any racial stereotypes or try to avoid them at all costs? I know all they really care about is ratings, so how much of a social experiment is it really? It's more of a social experiment on the viewers, like can how many americans can talk about this show around the water cooler without offending anyone?

BrianB (BrianB), Friday, 15 September 2006 13:28 (seventeen years ago) link

If they really wanted to get with the times they should've divided the teams on religious lines. They could have a challenge where they reinacted that bible story where each team prays to it's god to set a bush on fire or whatever.

BrianB (BrianB), Friday, 15 September 2006 13:41 (seventeen years ago) link

They clearly are not - nor do i think they will ever be - in the practice of measuring iq.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 15 September 2006 13:43 (seventeen years ago) link

i still can't fucking believe they're doing this... "as a response to criticisms we're racist, we're starting a race war"?!?! massive wtf.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 15 September 2006 13:53 (seventeen years ago) link

i expected more ILX water cooler talk about this. it is pretty mindblowing that it even exists. won't they all join up into one big mixed tribe within a few weeks anyway? so then it can be a big luv-fest set to some old school Bruce or Mellencamp tuneage with a touching message about how the USA is NUMBER ONE because it's a big melting pot where even foreigners can live like White People (aka The Amazing Race) and we all DO get along etc. (this will mostly work because there ain't no a-rab tribe)

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 15 September 2006 16:48 (seventeen years ago) link

if nothing else, the ladies generally make up the hottest Survivor cast in memory. Chaoboi seems nuts in a good way, too.

That's the oddest criticism about The Amazing Race I've ever seen.

Cao Boi is brings the MONSTER BASS for the Vietnamese Acid Mothers Temple.

Fritz OTM. In no more than four weeks' time, the tribes will be redivided (reintegrated, if you will) simply because of the numbers game. (Watching 2 and 3 person tribes at this point in the show would be BORING.) Fraternity will rule for a short time after the merger, but soon all that will disappear in the name of the GAME again with requisite backstabby action.

The producers do apply pre-screening tests, but those are mostly health and psychology stuff, definitely no smarts-testing.
