FX sitcom about schlubs in Philly that own / run a bar. Hilarious hijinks ensue re: picking up girls at abortion rallies, rigging pee-wee basketball games, turning a comptroller race into a corruption-ridden slapfight, and fathering babies w/ the girl from the Blair Witch Project. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, A++++++++

I only saw the ones where they entered the guy into a streetfighting contest and where they served liquor to high school students. Really good stuff indeed.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 4 August 2006 13:59 (twelve years ago) Permalink

ilx sometime-poster lemin turned me onto this show, and i think it's great, even if casting danny devito was a bit of a mis-step on the producers' part. the abortion rally pick-up episode and the one where charlie gets "cancer" = GOLDEN

joseph (joseph), Friday, 4 August 2006 14:25 (twelve years ago) Permalink

This show is great, although the first season was better. The second has been a little too wacky in its plotting - a little too "Seinfeld."

The other thread: It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia

The Yellow Kid (The Yellow Kid), Friday, 4 August 2006 17:38 (twelve years ago) Permalink

its def. Seinfeld/Curb Your Enthusiasm-style "mean people" humor - only with young hipsters instead of old, rich, middle-class Jews!

Its mildly entertaining but it always feels really forced to me. the characters are all just virtually interchangeable assholes, none of them have any identity (I chalk this up to poor writing)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 4 August 2006 18:01 (twelve years ago) Permalink

I had no idea this was the 2nd season!

Yeah, they all take turns being the asshole, but they're the asshole in different ways. Charlie's the loser asshole; Sweet Dee's the asshole w/ a vague conscience (and overactive libido); the good looking one's the suave asshole; and the bearded guy's the bro-down asshole.

I just downloaded the first season because I saw Danny DeVito on the Daily Show the other night. I thought it was good, certainly summer stop-gap good, but it's no Entourage.

okay, so despite my comment about rotting chinese food above, i got a bunch of promo copies of this in the mail. and it can be quite funny-- really like the one about welfare, and the gay bar episode, etc.

here's the thing: i am interviewing Dennis (the suave one) and Dee (the chick, Dennis' sister) tomorrow for a magazine. any questions anybody wants to ask?

Charlie is probably one of my most favorite TV characters ever. I, too, thought the second season was a little bit of a let-down. Good to hear they've gotten it back on track for the third.

This season has been as awesome as the first two so far, and Charlie is just amazing. I haven't laughed as painfully hard as anything all year than the "Day Man/Night Man" songs from the episode a couple weeks ago.

You're a master of karate and friendship for everyone!
I'm amazed at how Charlie's insane screaming ALWAYS makes me laugh. It should've gotten old and annoying by now, but it just gets better.
Great, great show (albeit uneven) and I'm so glad it's managed to last so long. I was sure it wouldn't get a second series, let alone a third, since I've heard so little talk about it.

Øystein, Sunday, 28 October 2007 22:57 (eleven years ago) Permalink

Yeah, I love how they always find ways for Charlie to scream and Dennis to take off his shirt.

Michael F Gill, Monday, 29 October 2007 02:31 (eleven years ago) Permalink

I've had "Dayman" stuck in my head all day at work today. I'll write a line of code, then a voice in my head goes "fighter of the night-man! (a-aa-aaaah)"
It might drive me insane, but it's fun.

BODY PROP (nickalicious), Thursday, 13 November 2008 20:56 (ten years ago) Permalink

I've been a little disappointed with the last few weeks of episodes. The first set of episodes was pretty great, though - it all kind of peaked with "Mac & Charlie Die". I have to admit that scene above in the mailroom was amazing, though.

Nhex, Thursday, 13 November 2008 21:00 (ten years ago) Permalink

Tonight was fucking incredible. I didn't actually hear anything they said during the home invasion scene over my own laughter; all I really remember of it was Dennis holding the boombox.

The plane one had ambitions to do something clever, different and interesting I guess, mostly didn't come off at all though. Agreed Frank showing up in the toilet was the only real laugh.

chap, Sunday, 23 September 2018 11:05 (one month ago) Permalink

What was interesting, clever or different about an episode that not only was little more than a meta riff on a previous episode, but whose ostensible subject of satire - women-led gross out comedies - also seemed weirdly out of date? As was the women's march, which was (incredibly) almost two years ago. Even the call back to the waiter they torment fell flat. Like anyone gives a shit about that guy.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 23 September 2018 15:32 (one month ago) Permalink

Mac lifting Dee by the crotch was the biggest laugh of the season so far.

chap, Friday, 28 September 2018 08:11 (one month ago) Permalink

This episode was pretty funny/true to form. Even if the repeated gag of Frank coming back into the room on the phone was used maybe too much.

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Friday, 9 November 2018 14:28 (four days ago) Permalink

I didnt know what to make of that ending.

Οὖτις, Friday, 9 November 2018 15:05 (four days ago) Permalink

I kinda disagree. I found the season spotty but not much more than the last season or three, and had plenty of highlights for me.

but while I thought the dance sequence was amazing, I found the rest of the episode shockingly short on jokes. Just having Frank bleeding a lot didn't really do it for me.

dan selzer, Friday, 9 November 2018 16:03 (four days ago) Permalink

yeah it just wasn't funny. I kept thinking there was gonna be some joke at the end of the dance sequence that would tie it all together but... nope

Οὖτις, Friday, 9 November 2018 16:07 (four days ago) Permalink

the dance sequence reminded me of their dance routine at the high school reunion

Οὖτις, Friday, 9 November 2018 16:07 (four days ago) Permalink

Except that one did have a punchline where it turned out to be all in their head but actually terrible. This one did not. It actually reminded me a bit of the end of "Beau Travail!"

I did think the rest of the episode was terrible and even wondered if that was on purpose. A running gag of Frank sticking things up his nose to stop bleeding? Lame.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 9 November 2018 16:35 (four days ago) Permalink

exactly

Οὖτις, Friday, 9 November 2018 16:37 (four days ago) Permalink

I'm basically in agreement with AV on this one. The tepid, meh-ness of the episode that led up to it, which set you up to expect another "lol they're not really killing George Michael choreography like they think they are" punchline, allowed Mac's earnest butterfly moment to soar on its own barely coherent terms.

I get why people wouldn't want that from this particular show. But, as a gay man who also has had a history of setting up self-sabotaging apparatuses to keep me from reaching self-actualization, it resonated like a tuning fork in my chest.

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Friday, 9 November 2018 16:38 (four days ago) Permalink

yeah this is not a show that has ever trafficked in earnestness or genuine emotion so it was sort of jarring to see the sequence played (for lack of a better term lol) straight

Οὖτις, Friday, 9 November 2018 16:42 (four days ago) Permalink

That's categorically not true. Dee wheeling down the hospital corridor with her surrogate alone.

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Friday, 9 November 2018 16:59 (four days ago) Permalink

Frankly, it's the only thing that kept me coming back after roughly season 5.

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Friday, 9 November 2018 16:59 (four days ago) Permalink

that seems like a bizarre reading of this show (and that sequence in particular as well) to me but whatever

Οὖτις, Friday, 9 November 2018 18:18 (four days ago) Permalink

You only get so much mileage/goodwill on the premise of "these are the worst people in the world!" in my book.

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Friday, 9 November 2018 18:35 (four days ago) Permalink

there have always been some strangely touching musical moments in the show, even if they're often undercut with jokes (unlike this one). I thought the dance scene was moving and i'm glad they played it straight.

vulture had a great article about the preparation that went into that scene and Rob McElhenney's absurd commitment to his work: https://www.vulture.com/2018/11/its-always-sunny-mac-dance-season-13-finale.html
